After feeling like a chump by summoning help for gargoyles I rerolled and decided to do it again. +4 longsword and some pine resin worked wonders. Now I have a gargoyle axe and debating a dex build.

@NEStalgia I’m not sure why you keep getting told ‘Sorcerer’s suck’ but it’s been one of the least popular classes since launch and i’ll never truly understand why (i think it’s rooted in PvP though, lots of people used to cheese a homing spell) - everyone’s entitled to their opinion though so rather than disagree let me explain why I think you should play the class you want to and why my opinion differs;
I’ve played through DS now as pretty much every class combo I can think of & does that in any way make me the authority? Heck no, it’s just my opinion like any other. That’s why I’m loathe to see you pushed away from the style you want to play as you should be free to form your own and imo no class sucks; each just makes different areas easier/more difficult. If you want to go sorcerer then go for it!
The very notion that standing around throwing magic missiles is all you do is also bogus; you do get weapons that scale with magic (just hard to forge them near the start) and they make melee-attacking as a sorcerer the same/just as much fun/viable as with a strength/dex build. Which is most fun overall is (again) entirely subjective; like you I always start RPG’s as a mage/most mage-y class I can and DS was no exception - it certainly didn’t turn me off, nor was it ‘easy mode’ as some suggest; I really enjoyed it and completed NG+ twice as said sorcerer because of how much fun it was. It can be exploited to ridiculousness on later playthroughs for sure, but so can any class (i mentioned my 4-hit gargoyle takedown earlier as a dex build? Some may call that boring/easy mode) once you know what you’re doing/where you’re going and most importantly where to find stuff. You do become something of a badass at a certain point, but that’s where the devs were obviously aware as a few enemies begin to resist magic a bit which encourages you to get creative.
That’s the thing, when people say sorcerer trivialises boss fights they forget things like the Capra Demon - EvilLucario said a few pages back he couldn’t understand why people struggled against him - as an early game sorcerer I had a terrible time against him because my weapon didn’t scale with my main damage stat, thus melee was ineffective and the cast time of sorceries is so agonisingly slow that it made it five hundred times harder than anyone else found it. Inversely, everyone else struggled first time out against the gargoyles yet as a sorcerer I could bide my time and blast them into oblivion. A lot of the bosses I struggled with on my first playthrough are different to the norm which doesn’t suggest easy mode, just that strengths lie in different areas?
The concept of ‘easy mode’ has been there since launch (remember that unfortunately DS has attracted people since launch who love to engage in d*** measuring competitions and remind you why their playthrough/character is best and you took the easy route etc); the first ‘easy mode’ was actually nerfed quite hard since the game launched - a lot of the bosses had a real weakness to lightning damage which made a lightning based dex build incredibly OP at certain points, but if people enjoyed it then no harm surely?
Regarding resistance, whilst a few of the later bosses do resist magic more, they’re far from unbeatable. Sometimes you may need to think outside the box or pack a plan B but nothing will straight out stop you progressing. Also worth bearing in mind that there is no level cap so you can always add levels and increase another stat if you want to pack a strength/dex weapon as well as power sorceries - this will require some kind of grinding as stat investment for sorcerers requires points in both attunement AND intelligence so you’re unlikely to have enough souls to max the others too without some extra enemy bashing - but it’s doable, just obviously time consuming. A lot of people stop levelling around the 120 mark as it affects the summoning/invading if you go too high (and stat increases have massively diminishing returns once in the 40’s - exact drop-off differs by stat), but if you give zero poo’s about that then level away and make a hybrid of your choice!
I only meant to write a few lines & it’s turned into an essay soooo guess i’ll leave it there - although will quickly add that whilst I love the sorcerer class, a dex build is my favourite overall purely because of the weapons - but even then, having one of sorcery/pyro/faith (miracles) is an added bonus and only adds to the enjoyment! Happy hunting!
@Quarth He was one of my toughest bosses first time out. No one right way to do it, but as suggested, beinb able to take the dogs out ASAP will make your life much easier.
Again, not saying i’m right/other is wrong but be careful relying on a shield in that fight - they hit fast & Capra hits hard which makes stamina management difficult if both blocking AND attacking. Sounds obvious but evasion >>> blocking in this fight (imo), the stairs at the back will help massively (so long as the mutts are gone!).
@rallydefault If that's your preference you dont need us to convince you it's good. I agree its stiff. I have adapted to it when I first played it and am adapting once again. It more strategic instead of reactionary imo.

A few of you will be heading to Blighttown in the not too distant. As many will point out, if you got the master key at the start/bought it since then there is a shortcut/back entrance (which you will undoubtedly use later), but you’ll skip out on a fair few items if you use it straight up.
I’m not going to lie, it can be miserable first time out, but it’s hard to gauge how much of that was due to difficulty/not having a clue/the framerate on 360 being abysmal.
There are a few items that will make your life a little easier on your journey through and a ring that is almost essential for when you get through the main part; won’t say much more than that unless asked - there are guides all over the net anyway - all i’ll suggest is (and I suggest this for the majority of the game) be mindful of which armour you’re wearing and don’t discount the material/robe style stuff - there’s a reason they’re in the game (direct damage is not the only damage!).
Will stop harassing you all now, realise i’ve written a novel in this thread already today - may as well be playing the thing! (Testament to how much I love it I guess - sat writing about this instead of playing RDR2!)
@BrainOfGrimlock I actually went with a dedicated melee build from beginning to end on my first playthrough. That said, I was also using a Black Knight sword which gives bonus damage against demons, so maybe that's why Capra Demon wasn't so bad. But I never really struggled with Capra Demon, even on my second character using an entirely different weapon, the katana. Until my first NG+ run, I didn't really use magic, and I found that pyromancy and some sorcery spells (Dark Bead haha) were just disgusting and not really fun to use.
Metroid, Xenoblade, EarthBound shill
I run a YouTube/Twitch channel for fun. Check me out if you want to!
Please let me know before you send me a FC request, thanks.
@EvilLucario definitely wasn’t saying melee builds aren’t great fun too - good melee builds destroy Mr Capra Demon, not to mention katanas are my absolute favourite weapons in the game (the Uchigatana in particular)! That’s why as much as I enjoy playing sorcerer, if ever I play this first game again I always go dexterity so I can ninja my way around!
I think it’s pretty common for people to go pure melee or sorcery on their first run through (with maybe a dabble magic/ranged) with hybrids coming on later playthroughs as you get a (much) better understanding of the systems. It’s what I love about it that so many builds are viable - look at the level 1/no armour completion people!
@Dezzy How do you do both at once? If Knight is more fun I might as well stick with it rather than reset my progress a second time. Not that I'm far in.
For magics, you just need your "Attunement" stat up to the right level and any character can use one (I think it's 2 levels above the starting point for a knight).
Then you attune a spell at the bonfire and equip the right weapon (for sorceries you need to equip a catalyst, for miracles you need a talisman, for pyro you need the pyromancer flame). Yes it's complicated and never actually explained.
I think I know the answer to this but here goes: the character movement in this game is pretty stiff, right? I just can't get past that sort of thing in a game.
Yes but it's tied to your character's total weight. Your rolling becomes faster and covers more distance as your weight decreases as a percentage of the total.
I guess trying to take out the dogs first is a good idea, but it’s not that easy... Well well... Enough played for tonight, there’s a day tomorrow as well. Goodnight!
I pointed out a few pages back that you can kill one of the dogs before you start the fight by throwing firebombs over the wall.
I'm currently on a quality build with claymore +15 30/30 of strengh/dex and wondering if I should up my faith for sunlight blade I don't know if it's worth it or not
@MisterMan@BrainOfGrimlock I got the magic shield sorcery, boosting my shield. Hopefully that will help! Will try to take the dogs out and attack the demon from up above.
Ok, weekend is here. Checking out some Red Dead and My Hero Ones Justice, but I'll probably hop back in to Dark Souls at some point today or tomorrow. It's nice to see so many people here are so knowledgeable, which will come in handy when Question time rolls around.
@zionich
No idea what he's talking about. You gave a calm and logical response, so I don't really understand either. Might have hit a nerve or something... only explanation that makes any sense to me.
