I opened that gate beside the knight-merchant guy with the Blighttown Key, but some big enemy took me out. I decided to go ahead and explore some more outside the Depths. I had an Ember that I gave to the blacksmith in the church, and then I killed the big headless demon on the path to Darkroom Garden.
I've gone down to Darkroot before now, but the tree enemies are way more manageable now with my upgraded sword. I found a big dog boss named Sif, but I didn't feel anywhere near prepared to fight him, and then I found a Cheshire Cat kind of creature that let me join a new covenant. I was also able to find the Eastern Armor set--though it seems a bit too heavy for my build--and a Hydra-looking thing. I went down to it, but it was a little too snake-ly for my liking, and I left.😂
Okay; here's a question. Is there a good pause point in this game? Because my copy of M&L Brothership just arrived yesterday, and I'm dying to start it. I usually don't pause in the middle of a game, but I've waited for a new Mario and Luigi for so long. With that said, I'm worried that pausing now would result in me forgetting what I've learned. Is now a good time to pause? I'm right before Bilghttown.
@Mrkittyhead I'd actually recommend pushing a bit further into Blighttown.... this is perhaps the most frustrating/divisive area in the whole game (perhaps even the whole franchise, to a point) and you'll be well ready for a break after a few hours navigating this area.
I'd suggest that the game would be horrendous to return to, if you haven't had a few decent stabs at BT.
So perhaps put a few hours into BT, and then break once you reach the point of wanting to throw your Switch out the window
@CJD87 ah, yes. The dreaded Blighttown. Thanks again for the advice!
I had a random urge to check out the skeleton path beside Firelink, and I’ve surprisingly gotten really far. Getting into the Catacombs was kind of scary, but it’s not bad once you’re in. I think it’s my favorite area yet. I just found a talking skeleton with a pickax. This game keeps surprising me😂
@Mrkittyhead Is DS your first dance with FromSoft games? Or the Souls-genre? They initially seem insurmountably difficulty, but they're actually not too severe.... you just need to understand stat-allocation, and get a feel for the combat etc.
One of my genre-favorites is "Salt and Sanctuary" - this is essentially a 2D version of Dark Souls, with some Metroidvania elements also. I'd highly recommend you keep this on a wishlist, as it frequently goes on discount/sale. Its awesome, and performance on Switch is perfect (as you'd expect from a 2D indie game)
@Mrkittyhead I was really put off by the difficulty at first and that is why I postponed my first real tackle with the series.
It was on the Switch, I too used the words "dreaded blighttown", etc.
My breaking point FOR GOOD (not for bad) was when I defeated Ornstein & Smough. From that point on I was 100% sure I could beat anything
My advice is to use a guide, the games are plenty difficult to not feel guilty or cheating.
And once you are comfortable with your build you will be dancing around the enemies instead of fearing them
Once DS1 was beaten DS2, DS3, Bloodborne, Elden Ring, Demon's Souls and Lies of P fell. And now I understand all the memes and the cult following of the series I am one of them
Okay, I’m honestly not sure if this is a big deal or not, but I’m proud of myself. I somehow managed to get down to the second Blighttown bonfire without dying! I’m scared that things are going to get crazy out of nowhere🤣
I only had two Estus left, and the poisoned water almost got me, but I was able to use a purple moss thing. I also found a Shadow armor set near the beginning which I think has helped with poison. I’m currently using a Great Sythe that I found in Catacombs, and that’s helped a ton too.
Even if this isn’t the hard spot yet, I’m proud of myself for making it this far. It’s the longest I’ve gone without dying so far.
@Mrkittyhead Blighttown is definitely a challenging place and one that breaks many players that started with DS1. To this day, I still avoid it as much as possible.
I'm not very involved with the Souls community these days, but they are a bit obsessed with difficulty instead of having fun. If you need extra help like jolly cooperation or guides, don't let them guilt trip you into thinking that you are playing them wrong. They don't even like certain builds and created rules for PVP that weren't there before and don't make sense. This is coming from someone that started with the original Demon's Souls on PS3 and even the King's Field series before that although I never finished it haha.
Glad to see someone enjoying this masterpiece. I'm probably very rusty as I haven't played in a long while, but feel free to ask me for any help.
@roy130390 yeah, I’ve seen some of that. I’m trying my best to ignore it, but I sometimes find myself trying to make things harder, for whatever reason, especially at the beginning, but I’m over that now😂
I think the hardest thing I’ve found in Blighttown so far was that little drain pathway with poison dart snipers. Besides that, I’ve luckily had a pretty smooth time, especially compared to the hell I experienced in Catacombs, haha. I found some really cool red robe armor, and I bought the Uchigatana from the Cheshire Cat Clan Eastern dude (why is he down here??). I also found a key to New Londo, so now I’m back at Firelink!!🙌
Some stuff has apparently gone down while I was away, though, and I’m guessing it’s Lautrec’s fault, so now I need to find a new place to use the item I got in Blighttown.
I’m assuming one of the next places I should head to is that big spider nest. Quelagg’s Domain, I think. Last time I went in I was killed really quickly😅
But yeah. It’s so crazy how at the beginning of all this I just resigned myself to being humbled by constant death, and I was honestly okay with that. Now, though, I have some awesome armor, two weapons I love, a boatload of Estus, a good bow, and some pyromancy powers to absolutely roast my enemies with. It’s just so fun. Fun in a way that I can’t really describe. So much satisfying progression that keeps building, in both build and skill. This really feels like a game that everyone should play at least once, and I’m glad Elden Ring was able to introduce so many to the genre/series.
This game is so insane. I went back to the lava area and found a new covenant. Then there was this huge enemy past a fog gate, but it wouldn’t attack me. I saw a lot of bloodstains past it, so I had an idea of what would happen after I picked the armor up beside it. It started attacking after I got the armor and I ran for my life😂 I forgot about the fog gate, so I just sat there with my shield up as it came towards me🤣 Then, it slammed it’s arms down, and I was able to dodge, but it was between and the fog gate (not that I could get out anyway😅). I started wacking it, but it wasn’t doing much. I accidentally switched to my bow and shot an arrow at its head, and it one-shotted it. No idea why this happened, but it made me feel so epic.
