They're not going to can a complete game just because a war is happening somewhere in the world.
It's not entirely off the table. Nintendo is no stranger to making baffling business decisions.
Nothing is entirely off the table. Putin's heart could potentially grow three sizes in the middle of the night and call off the war tomorrow. Or he could order a nuclear strike and kick off WW3 tomorrow.
Neither event is very probable, though, and neither is Nintendo deciding to totally trash a highly advertised project that they've likely pumped a decent amount of money into. They didn't become one of Japan's most profitable companies by burning their money.
They just want to avoid bad publicity, and probably decided that pushing off this release by a few months was a safe bet.
Baffling? Not quite. It's mildly surprising at best, in my opinion. Nintendo can be tone deaf at times but they're very good at jamming the brakes and delaying things if the situation calls for it. As a matter of fact so are other companies.
I think Nintendo did it when Japan was hit with earthquakes the other year, they delayed a Direct or something.
Sony, a Japanese company, did delay the PS5 reveal back in 2020 because of the killing of George Floyd.
Back when 9/11 happened Rockstar delayed GTA3 by a month to remove obvious New York references.
There is precedent to this kind of delay, with both Japanese and American events.
Since he makes it clear that he is siding with the delay despite his personal frustration of it, I had opted to release some patches, including an officially full translation, for a game in the Nintendo Wars series called Game Boy Wars 3, which was released in Japan for the Game Boy Color back in 2001, in fact less than a month before AW1 released in America. I could provide a link to the patches, but I'd rather have the admins' clarification and permission first. At least I can say that the patches would be available to give the userbase something to work with, and I do provide my thoughts on the Russia-Ukraine War (summary is that I side with the delay and sympathize with both Ukranians and refugee Russians, so I certainly would not wish to undermine either inadvertently or no), so you can see I'd be willing to talk this out.
I understood the delay at first but this is taking way to long. Releasing a game like advance wars when the conflict was just starting wasn’t a great idea but now that the dust has settled a bit I feel like Nintendo can release a game about war.

I’ve just noticed Advance Wars has been re-added to my Amazon wish list with a price and a temp. 31/12/22 release date. Also checked and it’s listed back on the Nintendo website.
Isn't it obvious that Falco Lombardi is actually a parrot?
Definitely a horrible situation in Ukraine that has begat a mild inconvenience in the gaming world. It's tough to reconcile the horrid nature of the conflict with the fact that we uh wanna play Advance Wars or whatever. I get that this thing is gonna sell like hotcakes and everyone wants it. I bought it upon release in 2001 and am very interested in the remake. But I'm also disgusted by what's going on in the war. It's real life, and video games don't really capture the full scale of the devastation that war causes. If Nintendo releases this game when things are still so ugly, it feels like it's trivializing the conflict because Advance Wars doesn't really reach that level of nuance about war and suffering; it's just a nice strategy game. I kind of wish people would care more about the war in Ukraine and I think the delay is a statement on Nintendo's part that I kind of stand in solidarity with. People's lives are being devastated. I'm sure it would be much easier to just play a video game and not think about what's happening in the world at all. Maybe Nintendo feels that it's wrong to profit off of a facsimile of war during this political moment, or that this would cause bad press.
@KlonopinVanNess
War is always going on in some part of the world whether we like it or not. Most games have war as a backdrop to them. Mario and Zelda games are not exceptions to it either. Triangle Strategy released and it’s story is also war and invasions but in fantasy vs the Saturday morning fare of AW.
...No news...at all...I thought this was just gonna be a couple months of delay or something. At this point we better get Dual Strike content...or something.
Even this thread has gone silent...honestly I almost keep forgetting about the game. Really wished they would say something already, this is ridiculous...

Keep it PG-13-ish.
So if the releasing Advanced Wars is to controversial to release right now, they should just change the game to avoid the political similarities. Like maybe make one faction mutants and the other faction robots. Changed the setting to a war on another planet in the future or something like that. It won't be too hard.

@Tasuki I think your underestimating how much work that would be, like you’d be dumping all of the animations and art and then have to create new ones for the sci-fi space setting. It also ignores the point of the game being a remake.
It’s be much easier if the world just condones the invasion instead. Gamers get this game, fuel prices go down and Russia gets Ukraine so everyone wins!
I don't think there's any benefit to further obfuscating things. It's already set in a fantasy world where the initial antagonists, who don't even turn out to be the true bad guys, only bear a passing semblance to Russia.
