To me, it looks like it's at least partly a roguelike situation.
The home base with upgrades and stuff is pretty clear. The map slowly expands and probably gets more difficult as you progress. Different loadouts and options including teammates.
But then again, I'd consider something like Monster Hunter kinda/sorta a roguelike in that you're pretty much doing the same thing over and over again just using upgrades and stuff to progress a little deeper or more efficiently every time.
@squiddu-real I mainly mean the ground plants, many of them are just picture/textures on the ground. After thinking about it, I'm guessing it's because there could be many enemies (because this is salmon-run-esque) and ink covering things eating up much of the processing power. Or nintendo is just leaning toward keeping things simple for development, because nintendo.
Whatever the reason, Nintendo hasn't let me down yet with Splatoon. Even when I thought Side Order didn't interesting before it released, I ended up really enjoying it.
