@Mgalens I agree, its fascinating that the other day bandai shared some artwork:
https://mynintendonews.com/2025/11/22/acclaimed-studio-ufotab...
This might be a clue to atleast 1 tales game getting a native switch 2 version in Tales of Arise because all other games shown have recieved remasters apart from abyss.

Also all the trails games desperately need switch 2 editions, nis america released cold steel 3&4 for ps5 a few years ago so I'm hoping they will do the same for switch 2.

While Arise was somewhat divisive from what i gather i certainly wouldnt say no to a port, i do remember playing some of it back on ps4 and while certainly not my favorite tales game (that would be a tough choice, maybe abyss overall) i did enjoy what i played, i imagine i would have played more of it if it were on a handheld since i always find it easier to focus on RPGs on a handheld screen.

on the subject of handheld im curious to see what the situation regarding Hearts R would be, i remember enjoying it overall especially when it came to combat and the overall package but it would be a shame to have it trapped on Vita (not because i have anything against vita, i love the system, but its getting on a bit)

Also, also on the subject of handheld, one thing which would be nice about an abyss remaster/port would be that it would also be the first time in europe that it would be playable on a system capable of TV output (while i play most of my gaming handheld i like having the option of TV-out) since the ps2 version sadly never made it to europe (i did end up buying a US ps2 back in the day due to all the RPGs which missed europe but that ended up getting the dreaded disc read error a few years ago)

Back on the subject of Falcom i am looking forward to Memories of Celceta coming to switch (hoping it is fine on switch 2) since that is another vita game i have very fond memories of, it felt like one of the coziest Ys games even if filling out 100% of the map could be a nightmare (think it was the first one with that mechanic, something they greatly improved on with how Ys VIII handled it)

@xenobladexfan Wow, you're right. Berseria isn't even out yet and it's already listed as having BC issues on Switch 2. Nintendo needs to get their act together. Hopefully they prioritize fixing the issue before it releases.

@Mgalens ps2 era jrpgs are really good, apparently xenosaga ii was available in the uk for ps2 but the other two chapters were US only, also final fantasy X came out on the ps2.
The 2000s-2010s were definitely the time of jrpgs being a lot more harder to access,
games from this time period are incredibly expensive now on eBay such as the trails in the sky chapters for psp.
Also tales of arise really needs a switch 2 port because I prefer playing these long games on a portable device, in addition tales of hearts isn't too expensive on eBay for the Japanese version on ds.

@topsekret I wish Nintendo built native backwards compatibility into the hardware like the wii u and 3ds because the issue is apparently the switch 2 uses a different technique for backwards compatibility and this is what i assume is where all these problems are coming from, hopefully in a few months all the games will hopefully be fixed.

@xenobladexfan

As I understand it, the problem is that full hardware BC wasn't viable. Its dependent on either:

1. Being able to affordably include all the old hardware in the new device

2. A new upgraded chip being available that is "natively" compatible with the old one.

With the Switch 2, no such upgraded chip existed for the latter option, and the former would be a non-starter on price and size grounds. So they did the best they could with the available options: include as much natively-compatible hardware as possible, and cover the rest with a "compatibility layer" that basically converts Switch 1 inputs to Switch 2 format. Its not perfect, but the alternative would have been either "A Switch 2 that's only barely an improvement" or "A Switch 2 that costs several hundred dollars more".

metaphysician

xenobladexfan

@metaphysician that's intrusting, glad they kept the price down overall,
Some switch 1 games run perfectly on the switch 2 such as persona 5 and xenoblade x, so hopefully over time most of the switch 1 games that have issues will get fixed such as the crossbell games.

However on reddit, gamers are reporting issues with certain games since the last update.

That xillia situation feels like a classic case of "fix one thing, another thing breaks" since it did seem to fix a few games while others have issues (am curious to see how Vesperia is on switch 2 still and if that has crash issues)

Hopefully though things will even out as the transition layer should hopefully become more accurate over time (closer to native hardware) with each update though i imagine theres going to be some issues like this (though if it is to do with the BC layer it fortunately shouldn't need a specific game patch to fix)

Mgalens

xenobladexfan

@Mgalens, about xilla it sucks that the game now has progression issues, I bought that game a few months ago and played 20 hours on switch 2 but got really badly stuck last week due to the games battle controls not working properly with joy control 2, I have tried other games such as trails sky 1st chapter and the controls are fine in that game.

Weird how the backwards compatibility works with some games but not with others, guess its down to who develops the game.

I suspect part of the problem is "copy of a copy": games designed for very different hardware than the Switch, which were ported to it. . . but only to the minimum extent necessary. Stack the additional imprecision of compatibility layers, and you go from "little margin for error" to "no more margin".

metaphysician

xenobladexfan

@topsekret yeah when playing this game I got up to chapter 2 and 20 hours of in game time, however I noticed when trying to level up the controls are extremely unresponsive in battles so I got stuck trying to do combos which wouldn't pull off and my characters were only able to inflict 1 damage every turn.

Other players have noticed this problem too on ps5

@metaphysician really hoping whatever is causing the backwards compatibility issues gets fixed seems like Nintendo are on top of it though which is really good,

@xenobladexfan
That is definitely odd, especially that its on ps5 too so it wouldn't just be a case of the lower framerate in combat(vs the ps3 original though iirc the game was redone in unity anyway so i imagine logic wouldn't be tied to that) does make me hope it at least gains more traction and can be fixed, maybe not having a switch 2 version at launch could be a blessing in disguise since hopefully when/if that version happens it will be fixed.

its a shame since outside of some launch issues with crashing (esp on switch) the vesperia remaster seemed to turn out well (though unsure if it has any switch 2 specific issues or crashes) though symphonia still feels almost unsalvagable outside of fully redoing it (though to be fair the ps3 version was still a big step up over the ps2 port it was based on)

on the subject of the BC layer, im kind of mixed, on one hand theres the paranoia of a future update causing issues with one of my games on the other hand as you mentioned they seem to be on top of these kinds of things a lot of the time and firmware updates seem to be pretty frequent so hopefully down the line things will get closer to 1:1 with the original switch (only with the switch 2 performance improvements)

Mgalens

xenobladexfan

@Mgalens yeah I have seen other players saying the developer behind the tales of xillia remaster port is an inexperienced team, unfortunately they are also behind octopath traveler 0 .

Tales of graces f was ported by a expert team that have been around for decades, I think this explains why that game is flawless.

Also the BC on switch 2 is 50/50 for me, if done by either triple A developer or double A, who ported the game it usually gets fixed or works on switch 2 flawlessly, maybe trails from zero and trails to azure having issues is because the switch ports weren't done by falcom but by a smaller dev team with less resources.

@xenobladexfan
on a curious topic regarding Sky remake, i forgot if you mentioned playing the native switch 2 version but if so was wondering what the experience was like post update (where it added the graphics/performance toggle) since i hear it can get pretty blurry in handheld in performance mode but did see some handheld screenshots of it in a busy area (rolent) and it seemed more than tolerable but curious if there are later areas where it gets worse or not.

in general i tend to choose "performance" modes whenever available since i often find the game feeling smoother to pay makes up for the blurrier visuals most of the time.

Mgalens

xenobladexfan

@Mgalens I have been playing Trails games on switch since cold steel 3 and I would say Trails sky 1st chapter switch 2 edition is by far the most smoothest experience I have ever gotten from a falcom game, the game runs at 60fps and I noticed on performance mode, the most scenic areas of the game such as Valleria Shore, The Kingfisher Inn, the water looks amazing and extremely pretty at sunset.

Also Ruan is a good test too, overall I played 75 hours on this game and it felt like the hours went by extremely fast because the higher frame rates and fast loading times, in my experience this game is by far the best switch 2 edition on the eshop.

Also I did try this game last week and it works fine just as I remembered it did a few months ago.

ty for the reply, i remember hearing the game was surprisingly good even on the switch 1 version especially compared to some of the prior ones (i imagine because it launched on the system unlike daybreak 1 and 2 which i imagine werent made with it in mind) and is nice to hear the switch2 edition is also great.

Mgalens

xenobladexfan

@Mgalens, daybreak 1 and daybreak 2 were originally developed for the ps4 as kuro no kiseki in the early 2020s, however Falcom did a great job with the first daybreak on the original switch but the sequel really struggled with the hardware.

I read something the other day that falcom wants to develop the kiseki games on the switch 2 from now on
https://nintendoeverything.com/falcom-on-supporting-nintendo-...

As well as Atlus, Falcom are my favourite third party studio that develops games for Nintendo.

@xenobladexfan Oh dang, that's unfortunate. Sounds like they'll only support Switch 1 for another year tops. Hopefully they can do some more old Ys ports and at least finish the Sky remake series before moving on to Switch 2 only. Unfortunately, I won't be able to support them once they abandon Switch 1 since I have no interest in their key cards on Switch 2.

topsekret

xenobladexfan

@topsekret key cards aren't actually that bad, i own a few and i don't see the issue with them, they work fine, anyway on steam people who buy things on there don't actually own anything,

I would prefer it through if Nintendo could offer third parties an option for a cheaper physical cartridge, which includes a lot of data/speed for their games to run perfectly.

I reckon trails sky 2nd chapter will come out next year so hopefully there will be an option for people who want both.

Xeno series = max hype.

topsekret

@xenobladexfan Nah, key cards suck. Straight downgrade compared to real physical games. They burn through your digital storage space and you are dependent on Nintendo's servers staying online to maintain access.

Just like Nintendo, Steam also has DRM on their games, but I would trust Steam to stay open longer than any Nintendo digital storefront. The moment their next system isn't backwards compatible with Switch/Switch 2, Nintendo will begin the process to sunset those stores, like with Wii, Wii U, DSi and 3DS.

Btw, you can get DRM-free digital versions of most of the Ys and Trails games on GOG. You actually 100% own those.

For digital, GOG > Steam > Nintendo.
