have never used a GKC so dont know fully how they function, like for example are they dependent on the eshop listing or do they go directly from the download server (like how people can still redownload their purchased wii games) likewise after the initial download/launch are there any other online checks or does it function similar to digital on a primary console/with VGC loaded, the latter is the reason why people who have PT still on their console can play it despite konami seemingly nuking it from the servers (as in it cant be redownloaded) the inverse would be something like the classic games on NSO where they are dependent on the service and the online listing so the moment super soccer got delisted it was gone.

An example would be if someone inserted the gkc, installed and ran the game, then removed the GCK and inserted it later would it require another online check. (like say if your console was in airplane mode and you removed then reinserted the GCK would it still work)

@Mgalens, I have played a game key card for a 100 hour game and it works exactly the same as a normal physical card, I only downloaded it once and the system hasn't done checks as to which user can assess it,
https://www.nintendo.com/en-gb/Hardware/Nintendo-Switch-2/Nin...

@topsekret, Nintendo is 50/50 when it comes to digital content, the wii's eshop is still up for downloading bought games and the 3ds and wii u shops are still assessable for downloads too.

However I can see an issue with smaller developers making their games exclusive on any digital platform because if that platform is removed then the game is inaccessible,
I can think of a few examples: Fire emblem Awakening, Fates plus Shadows of Valentia are all JRPGS with dlcs that are now completely inaccessible forever, unless the player bought the dlcs.

developers should make their game have physical cartridges if the game is exclusive to switch 2 and can't be played on other consoles.

@xenobladexfan Nintendo has already stated that they plan to eventually shutdown the ability to redownload Wii games in their FAQ.

"In the future we will close all services related to the Wii Shop Channel, including the ability to redownload WiiWare and Virtual Console games"

When that happens, if your Wii or your SD card fails, you'll lose all your digital games on that platform.

That miles dude looks like he'd rub off on me pretty quick. Who in their right mind would be against a Metroid sequel starring a Rick Moranis lookalike side kick geared up in a bumble bee Yellow mech-suit? lol Either way, he doesn't seem to have much screen time.

That's the internet for ya, capitlizing on next to nothing being overly problimatic, and then taking issue with it through YouTube with eye bulging mouth gaping shiny thumb nails tagged with cringey negative hyperbolic head lines for the masses just for that precious $$$. One after the other, taking on the same issue, weather it's even an actual problem for them or not. many of them deep down probably don't even care, they're just riding the money train gainig sheepal' traction and following the current trend(s).

I can't wait to finally get around MP4 at some point for NS2. Seems like the only real issue people are legitimatly taking with it is the uneccesary Samus Cyclying oversized hub area.

@topsekret Wow I didn't know they were going to do that with Wii hopefully it won't happen for a long time, I don't actually have anything I bought on the Wii shop or DS I, but did buy a lot of stuff digitally on Wii u/3ds, such as Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon, which are really rare on resale markets,

I can think of a few rare Wii rpgs such as the last story and Pandora's tower which are rare/expensive now.

I wish in gaming that all companies should preserve their games, it is also a problem with Falcom too because their pre Trails, Legend of Heroes games are inaccessible in the west.
Also most of the fire emblem games and pre xenoblade, xeno games are inaccessible too.

@xenobladexfan
honestly with the wiiware and DSiware stuff its actually surprising that its been going on as long as it has considering how little in the way of future proofing they had, Having no account system so the games were tied to the console they were downloaded on to with the only way to get them onto a different one being a full system transfer, heck even funds were tied to the system they were on with you not even being able to use your wii or dsi funds to buy games from the wiiu or 3ds eshops, its like those systems existed in their own little bubble when it came to digital content and even though the wiiu and 3ds did eventually get account systems meaning funds were able to be shared between systems it still had some elements left over from the pre-account days.

While the systems the other consoles used was far from perfect they did at least feel like they had things in place which made things a bit easier or more viable to keep active, for example iirc the store on ps3 no longer accepts credit cards however since funds are shared between devices you can use your funds in your wallet, similarly the psp storefront is unable to be used but iirc you can buy psp games on the ps3 store and transfer them to a psp if you have your psn account tied to it.

this isnt to say that digital is perfect, far from it, digital still has a long way to go and while i doubt we will be seeing anything on the level of GoG on consoles it does feel like things such as digital compatibility is being valued more after what happened with the ps3>ps4 and the fact that the switch and switch 2 eshops dont exist in seperate bubbles unlike the wii and wiiu is at least a step (NSO retro games not allowing seperate purchases none-withstanding)

in the end though its up to the player to weigh the pro's and con's of their preferred method of purchase and its why i do wish at least that more games would offer full physical whenever viable.

seems to be another firmware update which is hopefully one step towards fixed Zero/azure. at the very least as mentioned they seem to be pretty frequent and a few major outliers have been made compatible so hopefully it will be Zero/Azures turn (the games not being listed as having issues shouldnt rule it out since iirc klonoa was the same but that got fixed just from an update)

Mgalens

@Mgalens hopefully, I haven't tried them yet but I read something https://www.pushsquare.com/news/2025/11/trails-in-the-sky-1st...
Falcom are intrusted in remaking trails from zero, so even if the original isn't fixed on switch 2 hopefully in a couple of years time, the game will recieve a 3d remake.

Also https://www.rpgsite.net/interview/19048-ys-vs-trails-in-sky-a...
In this interview, the topic of porting the original trails in the sky games onto the switch/switch 2 is brought up.

@xenobladexfan
some cool stuff in the link.

i am happy also to hear from the other link about falcom going in on switch 2 from the get-go, i played most if not all of the falcom games i tried prior on either psp or vita and am happy to hear that they will still be supporting dedicated handhelds. (not a dig against steam-deck or the like just that those devices are more portable-pc's similar to a lot of recent handhelds though the rumour of a new sony one does have me interested even if it is simply a way to play ps4/5 etc on the go since falcom have quite a few games on those systems and may be good if real for those games which may not get a dedicated switch-2 release)

on the subject of falcom games i did read that the Celceta port seems to be one of those games where it, or at least elements of it end up running at 1080p on switch 2 (i think the original hyrule warriors was another game which did this where it supports 1080p handheld) though i imagine its mainly UI elements since i remember back on vita elements in the UI including character models in the menu ran at native resolution.

either way looking forward to playing celceta again though am unsure if it has any potential compatibility issues, i imagine compatibility status would be easier to figure out though due to it already having a JP release iirc.

@Mgalens I agree with you about the steam deck, the issue is, valve is a minor company compered to Nintendo or Sony.
Sony's two handhelds had amazing games such as persona 4 and trails from zero/azure.
Also the 3ds had fire emblem, its hard to justify buying a steam deck for multiplat games that I can pick up on my switch.

Also cold steel 1&2 desperately needs a port to the switch 2 and ps5 because I heard the game crashes on ps5. https://www.reddit.com/r/Falcom/comments/kcpcmd/trails_of_col...

Trails sky 2nd chapter just revealed for switch 2,

https://www.falcom.co.jp/sora2/

Also I found the entire Q&A of the shareholder's meeting:

The most fascinating question was, the fact that falcom is thinking of establishing Falcom of America, to handle localisation, they are also planning to hire over 31 new staff in 2026/27, to make their devolopment team reach over 100+ so they can continue focusing on multiplatform releases.

The first preview is out for Trails beyond the horizion for NS2:

Nep-Nep-Freak

@xenobladexfan, I think that a Falcom of America sounds like a pretty good idea on paper. Here's hoping that if they're in charge of localization eventually, they don't start butchering it by censoring things for the "American audience" and keep it as close to the original Japanese version as possible.

My top 5 favorite games:
1: Hyperdimension Neptunia Re;Birth1
2: Pokémon Violet
3: Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
4: The Legend of Zelda Link's Awakening (2019)
5: Animal Crossing New Horizons

Mario Maker 2 Maker ID: MNH-8JB-PKG
Switch Username: Blanc

Switch Friend Code: SW-5325-5009-2423

xenobladexfan

@Nep-Nep-Freak I agree, anyway in the Q&A, Falcom, replies to the shareholder's question by saying: "As for 3 years from now, since we're hiring year-round, we're seeking personnel broadly. We don't have a specific target; we might add 10 people or 20 people, or if there are many people applying who don't fit Falcom's culture, there might be years with fewer hires."

So Falcom are saying they only want new staff who fit Falcom's culture, so I hope
this will apply to Falcom's US in-house team.

Hopefully, if they do localise the games internally, they should hire nis america and gungho staff to translate the games to english,
Also trails in the sky1st chapter sold better in the us and china than japan.

The preview for the switch 2 version sounds promising, the "variable" framerate option is interesting especially for potential future-proofing.

If the other games like Daybreak 1/2 or even the cold steel/reverie games ended up getting switch 2 ports of this potential quality i would buy the heck out of them. (i havent checked but i imagine horizon uses the same in-house engine as daybreak 1 and 2?)

Mgalens

xenobladexfan

@Mgalens on RPG site, the writer said that the game can run up to 120 FPS in variable mode with VRR,
This is promising because YS Proud Nordics runs at 120fps too,
I have played all Falcom's games on switch and the cold steel arc struggles to lock at 30fps on switch 1,

This game uses FDK, falcom development kit, it was used for trails in the sky 1st chapter.

I played the horizon demo (switch1) on switch2 and the image quality is already better than prior falcom games on switch 1.

I prefer to play Falcom games (excluding the ones with NS2 versions) on an overclocked Switch OLED outputting the docked image on the handheld screen. That way they're 720p minimim with a rock solid 30fps and no compatibility issues like the Crossbell duology.

But I'm glad to see their immediate adoption of Switch 2. In the past they were much like Bandai Namco was with Tales Of releases. Would take half the generation before finally focusing on newer hardware.

xenobladexfan

@JaxonH thats intrusting, despite some perfomance issues on switch 1, its a worthy sacrifice to play these games on portable mode, games such as cold steel 3, the crossbell games and persona 5, are text heavy games and as such it can take 15 minutes or longer to reach a save point.

Just hoping nis america update all prior falcom games with switch 2 patches, i would love to play the crossbell arc on the ns2 if they were patched.

Hey guys - just wondering: After I finish the second Trails in the Sky remake when it comes out at some point this year, where do you think I should go after that? Is there a third Trails in the Sky game? If so, do you think they will remaster it, or would I just be looking to get the original on whatever console that was for?

And what is the order after Trails in the Sky?

Thanks!
