So there are rumors that are floating around that have a Direct happening in early September. Do we expect this to happen?

You get to actually keep the games (rather than constantly pay to rent it)

So Nintendo should offer the ability to download it for a fee like Game Pass.

sometimes the game is improved outside graphics

So then only sometimes the game is better value.

(e.g. WWHD made the Triforce quest a lot less obnoxious)

Now I'm not very familiar with WW having not played it, but even one QoL feature like that doesn't quite seem like enough. If I was a WW fan, I'd be asking for those cut dungeons back in a $60 remake/remaster.

Really for full $60 retail games I'd want full remakes more along the lines of the earlier Pokemon remakes (FireRed/LeafGreen, HeartGold/SoulSilver, also OmegaRuby/AlphaSapphire to a degree), the Metroid remakes (Zero Mission/Samus Returns), or Mario 64 DS. Something that has significantly more/improved content over the original instead of a glorified copy/paste job with a handful of extras.

Grumblevolcano wrote:

and also there's a point where subscriptions are at their best with after that point it just constantly gets worse in value. Game Pass reached its best value in 2021 for example.

Unless they raised their rates that's not really possible. Adding more content to Game Pass only increases its value.

Grumblevolcano wrote:

If Nintendo were to add GCN games to NSO, they'd either add a more expensive tier (e.g. £60 a year) or increase the price of NSO Expansion Pack.

We really should be questioning why these tiers are so expensive when it's just ready made games they're making compatible with the Switch. The Expansion Pack was already absurdly overpriced (literally no one predicted it would be as expensive as it turned out to be) and hasn't gotten much better in value. But nope, we just complained about it for a few weeks while it was in the news and just said "Yes Daddy please" and ate it up. For $50 a month we should at LEAST be getting N64, GC, and DS, don't go up to $60 until we get to like, Wii U or something.

@FragRed Luckily this is less an argument about what fits the definition of some vague, subjective buzzword and more about which systems' games need to be made accessible for fans to buy. I would say a good rule of thumb in terms of which systems should be emulated would be anything more than 2 generations ago. So in this case, DS and Wii or older should be available through a service such as VC or NSO, and then for Switch 2 it should be 3DS and Wii U or older.

I'd bet we Have one early September. It's pretty much a given at this point, isn't it?

@ElRoberico Well a September Direct is all but guaranteed if previous years are anything to go by, but early early September? As in like the first week? Eh, not so sure about that myself.

My personal prediction would be one between the 10th-14th as that's when these kinds of Directs have typically fallen in the past.

@ElRoberico I think it will be next week because Nintendo's staying extremely quiet on SMB Wonder compared to most October 1st party games by this point in the year but not 100% sure because Starfield.

Bethesda Game Studios used to be like Rockstar where the whole of gaming would come to a standstill because the next big game is here but on the other hand Starfield is Xbox console exclusive so the opposite may happen this time.

@EaglyBird we have a holiday release for Switch, is Super Mario Bros Wonder, recall that Super Mario Odyssey was Switch first holiday release and the game released late octobre, also a septembre Direct is pratically garantee to happen, problaby on the second week of septembre(13/16 of septembre)

With music there's the whole what counts as classic rock discussion. Some say it's static (e.g. no later than the 80s and that'll be the case even in 50 years time) while others say it's more about how long ago it released (e.g. some count American Idiot as a classic rock album which released in 2004).

Amongst people I know there is a strong correlation between age and their answer to this question. Same with 'oldies'. Oldies are by definition things that I was personally not alive for.

Manifesting the Xenoblade X port 🙏 I have it on my Wii U but I’d prefer to play it on a modern console instead of the clunky gamepad. Probably not happening for a while though…

Something that I'm feeling pretty convinced we'll get at a September Direct (if/when one were to happen of course) would be NSO news. I know it seems unlikely given how we're still not through the roadmaps for both N64 and GBA yet, but I've been looking back through previous September Directs lately and no joke: every single one of them since 2018 had something for NSO.

2018: NSO Deep-Dive/Release Date
2019: SNES Games
2021: Expansion Pack Reveal
2022: N64 Roadmap (plus Goldeneye)

There's a very obvious trend with them showing off NSO-related news in September Directs and I have a pretty large amount of confidence that the same will happen this time round as well.

As for what they could reveal? Well....what about THAT game?

you know the one

My not very creative predictions for a September direct ( which I don't think will be next week):

  • MK8 final DLC
  • A reminder of the existence of Mario Wonder
  • Some upcoming NSO games
  • More info about some of the other upcoming first party DLC
  • A Kirby game coming out in early 2024
  • No preview of Peach game (I think she'll get details in an early 2024 direct).
  • Definitely no discussion of new hardware
  • Lots of random indies and third party games.
  • Edit: Mortal Kombat 1 which I forgot about.

Oh, we are doing predictions already? Ok then. Umm...

Something Tears of the Kingdom related to get engagement up for the holiday season (cynical lol)
Updates on mario Kart and Splatoon (obvs.)
Mario Wonder segment featuring Charles Martinet's farewell and him ushering in the new game.
Segment on Princess Peach and Luigi and then (read in Direct voice) 'Wait, someone is missing...'
Donkey Kong 3D 2
Squaresoft bring Chrono Trigger Remake to Switch nest year.
Namco have Soul Calibur 2 with Link and Namco Museum 2 featuring System 22 games.
Mortal Kombat 1 gets a Switch reveal.
Capcom Vs Nintendo
Power Stone
Half Life 1 and 2.
Rogue Leader 2 HD
and finally...Earthbound Remake 2024 (looks just like the manual!)
I say Metroid Prime 4 every Direct...so this time I'm not going to in the vain hope I am always wrong O.<

@GrailUK I totally forgot about Mortal Kombat. I'm stealing that and adding it to my list too.

Chrono Trigger would be great but I'm pessimistic. I think I guessed that last year.

@GrailUK
I already felt uninterested to watch Nintendo Direct with games list like that.
I'm not really surprised on Mario games.
I don't care popular AAA games.
I don't care zelda games.
I don't care NSO rental service.
I will be shocked and hyper excited for ARMS 2 or any cute Chibi Boxing games announcement.

@Anti-Matter There will be lots of random indies, maybe you'll like one. I doubt ARMS 2 has much chance of appearing before Switch 2 does. Maybe ARMS 2 will be announced next year.

@Anti-Matter With such a specific taste, you are probably just best to wait for the announcement articles instead of watching it and bringing everyone else down lol.

Depend on the developers, there are a lot of random indie games I will never like if I see the games like these:

  • rated 18+ games
  • retro 8 / 16 bit
  • pixelated metrovania
  • roguelike
  • non cute boxing games, moreover the punch out style
  • visual novel
  • too much waifus
  • smash bros style games
  • point & click with uninterested graphic
  • boring racing games

I will be interested with games like these:

  • cute farming sim games with 3D environments
  • cute life sim games with 3D environments
  • cute and pastel colors relaxing games like being a cafe owner or pet shop owner
  • DDR / Beatmania rhythm games style
  • any cute 3D platformer games
  • cute Chibi Boxing games
  • cute party games like Moving Out / Overcooked

If there isn’t an update on Side Order for Splatoon 3 I’ll cry. At this point we really need an actual update on it

So, I saw this Zippo leak recently:

So, Zippo leaks on their own, eh, not always a high probability of being real, but would be cool to have this week.

BUT THEN!
I was googling it and saw this:
https://comicbook.com/gaming/news/nintendo-direct-2023-next-n...
Back in July Grubb mentioned the possibility of a Direct around the time of Nintendo Live
And when is Nintendo Live?
September 1-4

All speculation on my part if course, and feel free to flame me on the sources...

The Zippo leak was the one I saw! I fully expect it to happen, but since (apparently) Zippo is unreliable, it feels more common sense than anything.

I also think maybe it’s a bit early to predict anything, although I do find the NSO trend to be very interesting. I also think that this Direct makes or breaks the trend of a GameCube stealth release. Once is an event. Two is a coincidence. Three is a trend.
