10/10 reviews inevitably glaze over some things that are problematic for some people
I don't think this is avoidable though. Ultimately a review (or should be) the subjective opinion of a person or people. Something that bothers you may not even show up on a reviewer's radar.
If your position is that no review should ever be 10/10, I strongly disagree. If no game deserves a 10, then that score should not exist in your rubric. Having a range of 0 (or 1) to 10 and then deciding to never give a 10 score in order to retain plausible deniability is just cowardice.
EDIT: I do think a strong argument could be made that games should be ranked on a less granular scale.
1: A game that you hate playing
2: A game that's fine, and reasonable if you have lots of free time to burn
3: A game that's good and pretty memorable
4: A game that's lots of fun and very polished
I think that's all I would need if I were to score games.
That's not even the IGN stereotype, what are you talking about? IGN gives every game at least a 7/10, that's the joke. You're not doing the joke correctly!
If you're referencing the Pokemon Omega Ruby or God Hand reviews, you're supposed to actually reference them, otherwise it doesn't work!
@kkslider5552000 They gave Brothership 5/10 last year which was I think the lowest professional review score it got. They gave welcome tour 5/10 which isn't too shocking but on the low end. Similarly 4/10 for Endless Ocean. I think I'm forgetting a more popular game which they were the lowest on recently.
I don't really check out IGN much, nor read their reviews often. I read NL reviews, but I don't really use them to help me decide what games I'm getting. People and websites just simply have different opinions. I give every game I play a score of my own. So to me, IGN or any other website giving a low score when everyone else gives a high score is a nothingburger to me.
My top 5 favorite games:
1: Pokémon Violet
2: Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
3: Animal Crossing New Horizons
4: Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope
5: The Legend of Zelda Tears of the Kingdom

Ah ok. Tbh, I'm genuinely surprised a written review in recent years would even be noticed enough to be meme'd. Outside of this site, I don't think I've read a game review in years and half the remaining game sites fell off a cliff, even the ones that didn't have high standards.
Like I used to go to Destructoid and last I checked it is basically unuseable because of ads and no one comments on it anymore.

NintendoLife has those occasional articles which summarize the review scores of other sites. So people here probably saw the brothership score from that.
The game was designed specifically for Donkey Kong as a means of putting DK back as a top priority franchise; not too dissimilar from Pikmin 4
DK's new redesign was designed with all facets of the character and his personality in mind, and was in development long before the movie reveal
3D DK is now a branch of DK and will carry the gameplay elements of Bananza moving forward, it's not a one-off(2D games will still be considered)
I'm especially happy about that last bit. Donkey Kong finally has a proper home with Nintendo, instead of shopping himself around to other devs. Very exciting future.
Calling it right now, metacritic score of 87. Enough critics drop it a point or two over the frame rate to keep it out of the 90s. I feel really good about this call tbh.
@Bigmanfan OK, I’ll take that bet. I’m gonna say the metacritic score (after a week of the game being out, so the reviews can trickle in) will be AT LEAST 90.
@N00BiSH So many people were telling me that I was wrong about DK being redesigned before the movie- and that the movie was using DK's design. Turns out I was right.

Well, with a grand total of one review as of now the average would be 95 😆
Famitsu is usually like a nothing review source for me. Every time they put out a review, it's always pretty positive- even for games that end up reviewing pretty harshly.

I guess a 87 its a more possible number as I said the other day. Its not gonna surpass the 90s, but they not gonna tear down that much, so a 87 sounds good.
I feel that the destructibility will turn a few people off therefore not in the 90s (TBF I am one of them and untill the latest direct I was going to skip but oh boy everything else they shown 😋)
reviews been decently positive so far, NLs was great. IGN gave them a 10/10, and those are rare from them, so thats exciting! Eurogamer got them a 4/5. excited to read more as wednesday rolls a long
