@wollywoo
It's "in" FPS view, but it's not an FPS... if that makes sense. It's an RPG. So you gotta level up, get stronger, etc.

By the time you hit your stride, determine how you want to build your character, you'll notice a big difference in your damage and how you can go about combat. It's pretty cool.

@Sylamp
I wanna say the update data was around 2 gigs.

@rallydefault Thanks for all the tips, that's pretty helpful. It's good to know about the side stuff. I'm more interested in the story though so it makes me want to play it less if I really need to do a ton of less bespoke missions. To be clear, I'm not yet finding it extremely difficult or anything. Just saying the combat doesn't feel great.

@Jeronan I mean I know it's an RPG, but I suppose what I'm saying is that FPS + RPG is not a great combination if you have a realistic world and you are shooting humans. I can kinda suspend my disbelief if I am shooting some alien monster or something (although even then it's quite annoying when they don't react properly) but when I am shooting a guy point blank with an assault rifle and they don't seem to care it's frustrating.

Yea, it's a cool game in the sense that you really don't need to do a lot of side stuff if you don't want to. You can pretty much just follow the main campaign without deviation - there's not a lot (or maybe none unless I'm forgetting something) of forced grinding for rep or anything. Some of the main missions have you wait a day or so until the character calls you back, but you can just sleep to instantly pass the time.

I really enjoyed it. I wanna go back for another run and try a different character build, actually.

@wollywoo Are you playing on hardest difficulty or something?

Standard enemy grunts go down real quick on standard difficulty. Only higher level mobs and elites with heavy cyber implants ( armor plating, shielding ) take of course longer to take down. But even those go down fairly quick when you level up and get better / upgraded implants, upgraded netrunner skills, better / upgraded weapons, etc.

If it takes forever to take down standard enemy grunts you doing something wrong or playing on hardest difficulty, which just turns everything in bullet sponges (all enemies will have heavy cyber decks, counter attack with cyberware, etc) and require you to really understand all the mechanics really well and play with fully optimized builds.

@Jeronan Just playing on normal. I probably exaggerated a bit, but it just seems they take too many shots to go down and they just don't seem to react at all when hit. I did take down one cyberpsycho, which was just the dumbest fight ever as I just hid a ways out of view and used Overheat over and over and over again with barely any reaction until he died.

On standard difficulty you can literally one-shot enemies with headshots lol.
And even without headshots it only takes few shots to take them down. The standard gang grunts that is.

But each enemy faction ( gang / corpo ) have unique strengths and weaknesses. So later on you will run in enemies with heavy cyberware, shielding, etc. So if you don’t know what you doing, with a bad build, wrong implants or haven’t invested in any….yeah then it’s going to be rough.

When it comes to Cyber psychos. They are basically mini-boss fights and actually really cool and unique fights.

There's this one spot where if i'm driving this gang in a car, pulls up beside me and just absolutely destroys me. I died like five times in a row and finally just I parked my car and ran on foot instead.

It was early in the game. So I only had like half a dozen skills in the upgrade tree. What I felt like that difficulty was off the charts. Made me think I was going to a area. I wasn't supposed to be in yet but I had side missions that were directing me that way.

I remember a time like that early in my plathrough, too. I was just driving and suddenly I was getting absolutely mobbed by all these enemies. I didn't hit anything or anyone, so I was super confused why it was happening.

I think I took a different route when I respawned. It was weird.

On my first playthrough, there was a very distinct moment maybe like 3ish main missions in, where my build just seemed to "click" and get the important talent tree picks and my damage spiked and the game got noticeably easier.

@rallydefault
What kind of skills did you go for?

I've been trying to focus on health and stuff.

Good way to start is to get Body to 4 and then unlock Painkiller, Speed Junkie, Comeback Kid and Army of One.
After that, Technical to 4 and then unlock Glutton for War, Transfusion and First Aid.
I usually get both Body and Tech attributes to 8.

This will give you a good survivability baseline and from here on out you should follow either a Weapon, Mantis or Netrunner build. Depending on your preference.
You really should focus on a single build, to maximize damage.

You should also not forget to invest in the right Cyber Implants. Too many people forget this. And when you get some good Cyber Implants, they can be upgraded.

I myself focussed on Netrunner skills, as its just plain fun to down whole gangs with Contagion lol.
I also unlocked some Technical weapon skills.

In my case, after I got Body and Tech to 8, I start investing in Intelligence and go into Eye in the Sky and Optimization, then Hack queue and Embedded Exploits, etc to boost hacking/quickhacks and RAM to finally unlock Edgerunner.
Intelligence also has a nice tree for Smart weapons, which skills I unlock later on.

PS. When you progress through the game, depending what missions you do, you might end up having to add more points in Body and/or Tech to unlock specific doors, etc.
I myself, I usually get all 4 attributes to 8, before I start pushing Intelligence to 10, then 15 and finally 20.

Yea, for my first run I did a combo of body and reflex, basically.

I was a shotgun/sword powerhouse by mid game, just dashing around combat and one-shotting people with either weapon. It was awesome!

Now I'm doing a second run and going the total opposite: intelligence and tech, focusing on the "magic" and smart weapons.

@Jeronan
Yea, cyber implants can really beef you up. I didn't find them necessary on normal difficulty, though.

I'm like 30 hrs in, Level 26, and got Body up to 15, Reflexes at 9, Tech at 6, Intelligence at 9 and Cool at 8.

I have a Precision Rifle that does crazy good damage, a Sniper Rifle that, with gyro aim, I'm taking head shots from distance left and right, a decent Assault Rifle with silencer on it, and the gorilla arms cyberware. I also have at least one cyberware mod for each body part, sometimes 2 or 3.

Completed the mission taking out 3 snipers during the parade, and am currently doing a side mission with Panam to hijack some old military tech. I'm so absorbed into this game now. It wasn't grabbing me that much at first but now that I've come back to it, I can't put it down.
