Managed to roll a 5 star Camilla earlier today, and I picked up a few 4 stars as well (Tiki, Stahl, Sully, Cherche). I've been really impressed with Tiki. She's an absolute tank, and she has an all-range counter ability. Even if Camilla gets up to her level, I still think Tiki will be my best unit. Doesn't change the fact that I want Lyn (and eventually Ike) more than everything, though.
I've seen some things about star rankings and merging, and the game seems to say a couple things.
You can increase a characters rank (star number) using those badges and feathers once the character is level 20 or higher. I have Serra (3*) and Tiki (4*), and the cost for those is 20 badges and 2000 feathers and 20 great badges and 20000 feathers, respectively. The game says that once you increase a character's potential, their level resets and their stats are set back to level 1 (but they are higher than what they would be otherwise). It also says that any stat boosts from merging are removed.
Based on that, the best way to build up characters is to level up (to 20), unlock potential (to the max star rating you want), THEN merge. My only question is, is it worthwhile to increase the level past 20 for characters that you are just going to rank up? Do the extra levels/stats carry over in any capacity?
Has anyone else been... losing the Story missions on the normal difficulty? I just finished up the Birthright chapter, and noticed I've had to redo a few missions, which isn't something I've heard others doing (Just wondering if I'm doing anything wrong). Probably because I've still been using Anna & the 2 Protags a lot, and no matter how much I level them, they're still only 2 Star heroes at the end of the day.
I got some 4 Star heroes in my last summon though (Gaius, and an Axe Wielder & a Cleric I don't know), so hopefully they'll make things easier once I level them up.
Initially i was really hyped and liked the game but in the last 2 days i realised some huge cons that made me delete the game. It requires too much orbs for summoning. Did first summon and got really bad heroes, that i don't like and that are really weak. So i tried to farm orbs on story mode but i don't have at this point heroes strong enough to make it and i should burn all crystal for characters that i don't like. I don't like this kind of system, they want to force you to buy orbs and i don't want to. I got really disappointed about it...
Same here. This orb system is a little bit unfair imo. You can get multiples of the same three star hero. 5 star heroes are pretty rare. Ok its free, but if you had paid for you might have spend huge amounts of money and maybe just gotten one 5 star hero out of it.
I will still login to it everyday. See what kind of bonus i get for free and how this game developes in the long run. My hype is definitely gone.

@RR529 I've been in a simiar position. Using the base team of Anna, Virion, Matthew and Raigh I've come to a complete halt on chapter 9. I think I may have spent too many orbs on castle upgrades (got the 2, 4, 6 and 8 orb upgrades) that should've gone to summoning.
I don't really care who I get and how many stars they have since the game has been really easy so far. I'm the "gotta catch 'em all" guy so I'm slowly just trying to get one of each character. That said, I did get my first 5 star yesterday (Jeorge).

I started the game a new and linked it to my other nintendo account. This time I didnt upgrade the castle. I think its more fun without in the long run.
Generally I think this game had lots of flaws if it was a proper console game but for a mobile game its actually quite nice. After two days of playing a lot and having to deal with its freemium limitation I think I will keep on playing in short bursts and see how many 5 star heroes I will be able to collect.
@RR529 Yeah, the 2 star protagonists you're given are not all that great, and don't get you very far unless you just level them up way higher than who you're facing. That said, since they are 2 star, you can increase their star rank pretty cheaply (just 10 badges for their color and 200 feathers) once they're level 20+. If you can get any 3+ star characters, just use them instead unless you want to use the protagonists.
@Andyv01 I can't say for sure how it works, but you can "Greet" people on your friends list and doing so will give you free Feathers, which are used to increase character's rank (number of stars). There doesn't seem to be a downside to having a huge friends list, so you might as well just add everyone you can.

Got a 5 star Lyndis & a 3 star Frederick (my second axe user in my army), but my happiest acquisition is a 4 star Donnel. He's going to be the star of my army.
@Meowpheel I have lots of mages, but no axe users aside from Anna. Almost have another 20 so I'll be trying again soon. (Although I'm mainly hoping for some characters like Lyn, Tiki and Roy)
Completed all the hard quests so now I'm onto Lunatic. Currently I'm just interested in getting more orbs, but I may see if there are more quests after this.
Also there will be a new map added tomorrow at 12 AM MST/2 AM EST/ 7 AM UTC which gives you 3 orbs for completing it on one difficulty and an extra 3 on the other. There will be one of these maps every week for 5 weeks so you can get 30 orbs in total from it.
Edit: Well at least one of these quests seems a bit difficult... (and currently impossible) I have to beat chapter 6-5 on Lunatic with Felicia who I don't even have yet...
Yeah, I'm spending my time in the Training Tower levelling my 4 Star heroes (Gaius, Maria, & Barst), and once I get them levelled satisfactorily, I'll head back into the story.
My team will be Tharja (5 Star) & the aforementioned 4 Star heroes.
I still want Camilla, Kagero, Takumi, Ryoma, and Aversa (if they have villains yet).

@RR529 I've seen some villains as enemies like Zephiel, but they don't really appear to be available for summoning in the current selection. (Choose details on the summoning screen, Aversa doesn't look to be in there though)
After this arena season ends, I'll be upgrading the protagonists to 3*s, then looking into upping Serra. It's going to be a while before I can get to any 4 star characters considering the feather cost.
