Topic: What video game had an overrated story?

(This is a discussion topic. So please refrain from bashing.)

The only storyline I couldn't stand was Resident Evil's. Not that the games are bad (1-4 are fantastic), but the storyline never... engrossed me. Resident Evil 5 had backlogs relating to the overall storyline and I never enjoyed reading them due to their poor quality.

GTA is another. And really, anything from Rockstar. Lack of creativity is disappointing.

Just for you.

Possibly Super Mario games in general?

this. Although, the story is not expected to be anything special in Mario.

Mutant Mudds. While some think the story has some sort of simple charm that channels Nintendo, it comes off as completely unoriginal & uninspiring to me.

It's a kid shooting mud monsters with a water gun. Seems to me like they quit thinking after 5 minutes (certainly doesn't channel the same kind of creativity of a plumber jumping on turtles, while using magical mushrooms & flowers, all to save the kingdom from a giant fire breathing mutant turtle).

I know I am going to get some hate from this but Call of Duty games. For me it feels like you play one of them you've played them all.

Honestly I got nothing. Although I hate how Street Fighter 4 has some well made cutscenes but nothing of story whatsoever! Man Capcom all you needed to do was try or at least explain it through writing! Good thing it's a fun game to play at least.

Yeah and no one buys it for there story anyway, some kids at mys school didn't even know it had a campaign mode, they own the game and play it all the time which is the sad thing... They just hit the online part...

Indeed, it is so sad when people play the games the way they want to, rather than the way HarmoKnight thinks they should play the game.

I'm struggling to think of game stories that are genuinely overrated - as in game stories that are meant to be good, but actually sucked. The Uncharted games don't do much for me. I guess that is the best example for me?

To be honest, I kind of liked the campaign stories in some of the newer Call of Duty games, especially Black Ops, although I can see why people would skip over them to play multiplayer.

Overrated is often a fickle term, but I guess now I'd apply it to the Kingdom Hearts series. I actually quite liked what they did with the first game, and could more or less accept the second game, although everything started getting lost with the whole Nobody logic, and it doesn't help that there are around 30+ main characters in some of the newer entries in the series. Characters like Demyx and Luxord also missed their mark, I guess.

Another one would be The Sword of Hope II - I tried really hard to take the story seriously, except that one little bit in the ending where... Bogi, you know, and then the entire thing just collapsed on me. It just seemed like the game itself didn't even bother committing to a good plot.

always thought I'd change to Gyarados after I turned 20 but hey, this is more fitting I guess. (also somebody registered under the original Magikarp name and I can't get back to it anymore orz)

^ LOL

Maybe I'm old fashioned but I appreciate the inclusion of a campaign.

@oiiopo, I agree with you on the point that the "news" at the end of the Sword of Hope II was a bit of a cop out, but all in all, the story was utterly fantastic, considering the limitations it faced.

Not only was it an early JRPG, it was an early Game Boy game as well (released in Japan in 1991). Also, translations weren't very accurate at the time (especially for a small company like Kemco). Given that all that story was in a GB game, and with such limitations, I find it very hard to criticise anything but that final bit of "news". To each their own, though.

Treyarch did a fantastic job with Black Ops. I mean you had literally three games in one in terms of content. Campaign, Zombies and the multiplayer make most games out there (especially in the FPS genre), look rushed and lackluster.

FF 7. Mostly because it's so awkawrdly translated that I couldn't figure out what was happening at times.
Though it did have its moments.
