@kkslider5552000 I mean, BotW... mostly does that (keeping its actual plot minimal and relegated to environments and locations). You get some optional flashbacks that flesh out the relationships between characters in the past, so it doesn't go quite full Souls in that respect, but it's still VERY minimalistic in terms of its narrative presentation, which I absolutely loved.
I guess my disagreement is that both had too much to avoid comparison to the older games for me, and so I prefer the marginal improvements in story in TOTK (ending dialogue aside). And neither have good enough story in its sidequests to make up for that either, which is the other big issue with it.
I'm not even sure if I disagree that TOTK went too ambitious either, but the last massive game I played was Xenoblade 2 so I think that made it easier. Which I do need to stop bringing up but its a really perfect compare and contrast for things at times, like in this case where Xenoblade 2 felt like if they put all the content of TOTK in the world of BOTW without the new additions, and replaced all the new parts in TOTK with backtracking and menu nonsense. So it was much easier to appreciate the size of TOTK, whereas without that context, maybe I would've been more annoyed and disappointed by it (also if I had not played Xenoblade 2 and realized I never want to be that patient with a game again, I might've tried harder to do literally everything like I attemped with BOTW, which I assume would've sucked (when I get back to TOTK, I'm doing whatever shrines I didn't get to and as little else as makes sense)).
Is it an unpopular opinion that I sort of prefer single-player offline games over online games?
.
Probably not on this website; with a few exceptions, Nintendo isn't exactly known for it's online experiences. Personally I don't even own Smash or Splatoon so apart from the occasional Mario Kart match, I am almost entirely offline. I suppose Mario Maker 2 is technically online but usually only to download the levels, so that doesn't really count.
@Pastellioli
Me too.
I never like MMO games that you have to get connected Online and still have to pay subscription to play.
I don't even care with most popular things as they don't look very appealing at all for me.
Offline games are still the best gaming experience.
Anyone else tired of people saying that Nintendo is trying to monopolize the monster collecting genre because of the pocketpair lawsuit? It seems to be a prevalent opinion- and I personally don't really buy it. Especially given how many monster collecting series exist that aren't published by Nintendo- with some rivaling Pokemon in sales. If they were truly upset over that, Yokai Watch would've been struck down so long ago.
"It is fate. Many have tried, yet none have ever managed to escape it's flow."
@VoidofLight I would not consider myself an expert on the topic by any means, but I did watch a youtube video that i thought explained some potential reasoning behind it very well.
It is very long, but for the TLDR if you don't want to watch an hour long video about IP law, the guy in the video (a lawyer by the way) thinks Nintendo is basically trying to shut down Palworld as a series before it can become a true rival to Pokemon, especially because of how close Palworld is beginning to partner with Sony, and the potential IP threat it could be to Pokemon if it grows large enough. (But once again, would reccomend the video, cause it's a lot more detailed, plus more entertaining than it sounds.)
@BrazillianCara Well Yokai Watch wasn't a Nintendo series, while Fossil Fighters was. Digimon existed and was pretty big for a while, but never got pushed down by Nintendo. Shin Megami Tensei also exists and never got pushed aside by Nintendo either. Persona exists, and same thing.
"It is fate. Many have tried, yet none have ever managed to escape it's flow."
@Bigmanfan ehhh I don't think Palworld really has anything that makes it a competitor. It copies elements from Pokemon, but it's an entirely different sort of game- and I doubt it would damage Pokemon sales.
On top of this, if Nintendo were going after Palworld for this sort of thing, you'd think they would also go after Atlus for Persona and Shin Megami Tensei, given those games were Playstation titles before Atlus ended their exclusivity with Sony. Those games sold a ton as well, with Persona 5 even going into the mainstream.
"It is fate. Many have tried, yet none have ever managed to escape it's flow."
@Bigmanfan I watched a Japanese video about patent law in Japan on this topic and the perspective was somewhat similar but somewhat different. It was basically 'clearly Nintendo has the legal rights to this IP' (such as throwing a pokeball to catch monsters) but that they don't always choose to go after other companies unless they are rude. Palworld copying ideas to the extent that they did, bragging about how they make games by copying popular games, and then working with a different huge Japanese company (making the whole 'just a small indie' argument not really valid) was apparently considered rude enough to break unspoken rules in the Japanese game making culture. So from that perspective it is less 'Palworld is a threat' — I mean, it's literally not child friendly so I'm not sure how much of a threat it could be — and more 'they actively annoyed Nintendo by being disrespectful'.
Regardless, it looks like Palworld will get off with some minor changes to gameplay and a small fine. Personally I always assumed it was just one of those briefly popular meme-powered games and would die a natural death, but I suppose we shall see. In the mean time we can look forward to Pocket Pair's Hollow Knight clone...
@VoidofLight It's not really about the sales or the similarity in gameplay. It's about how similar the game is in design, art direction etc. This is a problem because it can weaken the Pokemon brand overall. And Pal world is becoming MUCH more closely tied than anything you mentioned. Sony has already signed a deal to form "Palworld entertainment" in a move very similar to what Nintendo did some time ago with Pokemon. And once again, this is less about competition, and more about the damage that can be done to the IP. Sony wants to do any damage it can for pretty obvious reasons. And SMT and Persona aren't really that similar to Pokemon at all, so that danger doesn't really apply. And this is very much more Nintendo vs. Sony than it is Nintendo vs. Pocket pair. (And yes, I know it's a patent lawsuit, but we all know that's not what it's about. Nintendo has so many parents they could sue any game if they wanted to.)
If this is a confusing explanation, (cause I'll be honest, I'm tired and this is a freaking word salad of a response if there's ever been one.) I would highly recommend the video, as he explains it much more in depth and smartly (is that a word? I honestly don't know lol) than I can.
@FishyS I can understand that suggestion, but I don't necessarily agree. Patent lawsuits are extremely long and expensive, and would be a great length to go to over someone being rude. (Truthfully, this is what I thought for some time until I learned how long patent lawsuits are. Like, seriously, they can drag in for years lol) I would recommend reading my above response if you'd like to read my longer (and borderline illegible lol) thoughts. Or watch the video, cause he's a lot smarter than I am, that's for sure.
I knew it, I never agree with the GOTY 2024 from the game award.
I hate it.
I don't care whichever games won from the game award.
I will never agree with them.
I only care with my personal GOTY 2024, it is Barbie : Project Friendship PS5.
That's what I want to hear for myself.
@Anti-Matter My personal GotY didn't win anything either but I was still happy a cute family friendly platformer won rather than the usual photo-realistic type game.
@FishyS
But I don't.
Remember last time I was really salty with Astro game?
I banned that game from my PS5 machine for having Easter eggs from other rated 18+ Sony IP in chibi looking characters in disguise.
Totally unacceptable for me.
That game won?
I didn't even feel happy about that.
Face palm on this one. I've said far less and gotten my comments removed. It was surprisingly a great show this year. And my two GOTY nominees being EoW and Indy were nowhere to be found. I'm not out preaching hatred though.
Honestly - and this may actually be hugely unpopular opinion... - I think the Game Awards results were generally pretty fair!
Astro wasn't my personal GOTY, but I like the fact it managed to take the main award - alongside the various other awards it pulled.
Great to see Balatro sweep a few also.
Some of the announcements were genuinely exciting I thought - the new Elden Ring rougelike/co-op title seems quite ambitious, and I'm really keen to see how From handle that. Witcher4 also looks pretty awesome... and new Ninja Gaiden for Switch? Yes please.
My largest bone of contention still is the nomination of Erdtree.... even moreso that it didn't win, almost making its inclusion somewhat pointless?! Unless it was just to garner more hype for the new co-op game en route?
Would have been nice to have seen Nine Sols get nominated, but I appreciate the console release was too late (even though it came out on Steam during summer).
For the record, my personal top 3 this year: 1) Balatro 2) Nine Sols 3) lorelei and the Laser Eyes
Fun award show, and I continue to salute Geoff for putting this thing on every year... irrespective of the contentious discourse!
