Nominees are being announced on Monday.

Would like to see XC3 nominated for something, even if it doesn't win.

Can't think of anything else I've played this year that's likely to get a mention (maybe Stray in the Indie category, & Kirby & the Forgotten Land should easily get a shout for the Family category, maybe Pac-Man World RePac has a shot there too).

Great idea for a thread, and very interested to hear all the predictions!

My 2 cents:

"Game of the Year" - very likely to be Elden Ring, although GoW may give it a run for its money. I played through Elden Ring on PS and loved my time with this game... was such a unique 'community experience' also, with many people discovering new places/items etc at different times. IMO, it would be a well deserved win.

"Best Independent Game" - my vote would go to TMNT:Shredder's Revenge, but Tunic may scoop this one...

"Best RPG" - Possible Xenoblade 3? I started this recently, and think it seems great in early stages.

"Most Anticipated Game" - Probably between TotK, Starfield and FF16. TotK likely to scoop it, but FF16 may have a shot

"Best Narrative" - this could be really interesting, not too sure here. Maybe GoW? I've not played but here the story is pretty solid. Or even HFW?

It's fantastic that Xenoblade 3 got nominated for GotY.

Elden Ring will win everything everywhere. God of War might take away 1 or 2 tho.

Takeaways from the nominations:

  • I think there maaaaaaaaaaaaay just be an oversaturation of God of War, Plague Tale, Elden Ring, Horizon and Stray, it feels like those guys are in almost every category. Xenoblade 3 being a nominee for GOTY is utterly fantastic though, definitely deserved.
  • Pokemon Legends Arceus being a nominee for Best RPG makes me very happy. It ain't gonna win, but I'm still really happy about it all the same (and also immensely smug that I managed to call this in the Direct thread 😉).
  • I'm incredibly miffed Splatoon 3 didn't get a nomination for Best Score/Music. This series has one of the most unique OST's in gaming and it never gets the respect it deserves from the wider gaming audience 😡
  • Nibellion being in the running for best content creator makes me so damn sad dude.... 😭
  • Stray is definitely going to win Best Indie.
  • Bayo 3 in the running for Best Action Game? Very nice!
  • Family Category is expectedly dominated by Nintendo (my bet is on Kirby taking home the gold).

Overall thoughts: about as mainstream as I expected with a couple of nices surprises here and there. My guess for GOTY is Elden Ring (obviously) though I could see a repeat of 2018 where God of War snatches it.

This is such a weird time of year where gamers have not stopped talking about Metacritic and games only worth playing if they get a 9 or perfect score all year round but then try to shrug of The Game Awards as meaningless.

As someone who has barely played 2022 games, I'm just happy for Xenoblade. Especially for music, because they were ROBBED of that category in 2018.

Also the cat game getting GOTY nomination when most people, I'm dead certain, would not consider it as such speaks to the dire AAA gaming situation of 2022.

@kkslider5552000 Stray's a wonderful little game that I can't wait to play for myself at some point (and this is coming from a dog person), but GOTY material? Definitely not. It fits nice and snug into the Indie game category (which I believe it'll probably win honestly) but it would've been nice to see something else in the GOTY category instead of it (maybe another Nintendo game? Too many to choose from this year on that front honestly). No ill will to the devs though: they're probably over the moon right now.

For all XC3's nominations, I can't see it winning any of them just by glancing at the other nominees. It's probably got the best chance with the soundtrack but even there it's slim.

Splatoon 3's best shot is probably in the multiplayer category. It too will be up against the odds.

Bayonetta 3 is in with a better shot at best Action game. I'd even go so far as to say it should win, but I'm not that familiar with all the other nominees.

Nintendo have swarmed the family category again. I loved Kirby, but Splatoon and Mario+Rabbids would be worthy winners. Switch Sports though? Meh! Lego Star Wars isn't out of the running and might nick it in a repeat of last year's daylight robbery.

Mario+Rabbids seems in with a shot at best strategy too as there aren't any other compelling nominees.

Tears of the Kingdom is nominated for the completely meaningless award. Maybe it'll win? Who cares?

Elsewhere, the Indie game should go to Neon White, I think. I wouldn't be surprised if Stray takes it though. With both also being eligible for the debut indie, perhaps they could have one each?

The Game Awards is only awards show I watch, I love the reveals. I could care less about the awards themselves even if I vote in them every year (this year I picked Apex for best ongoing, Multi-Versus for best fighting and multiplayer, yes, I play this one on PC, and Sonic 2 for best adaptation).

Also, I love the orchestra. My favorite Game Awards moment...

Awesome this was played moments before the game came out too.

As for personal favorite game from 2022, I usually like ones that don't win awards anyway. As silly as it sounds, I loved My Little Pony: A Maretime Bay Adventure, being a fan of the Netflix series, the game did a great job capturing it, while being a fun game. It would never be nominated, but I love the game, I think that's all that matters.

Yeah, TGA's supposedly take both review/technical acclaim as well as cultural impact into account when it comes to picking nominees, the latter of which is certainly why Stray has so much presence.

After Among Us got a few noms in in 2020 (despite being a 2018 game) I looked at the fine print of their nomination process and it said a game doesn't even technically had to have released in the last year in order to be nominated, as long as it achieved newfound cultural relevance it didn't have during it's year of release.

So in theory (practice?) one game that has a metascore of 94 may be overlooked in favor of a game that has a metascore of 90 (just as a hypothetical) if that latter game achieved greater cultural penetration by their metric/estimation. This is also probably why Xenoblade has been so chronically ignored (it has a diehard fan base & doesn't have a bad release, but it's still culturally pretty niche all things considered), and thus all the more reason to be happy that XC3 has so much recognition this year.
