Gonna be honest, I was kinda surprised by some of the nominations, but I think from a mainstream perspective, GOTY was always gonna be a two-horse race between Elden Ring and Ragnarök.
@Pizzamorg I'm tempted to change mine/create dummy accounts with these people's old user names so they wont be able to change them back but it sounds like effort.
@Kermit1Pineapple nope, you can’t horde usernames. You gave up the name and if a name is free anyone choose it as their own which is fully within the rules.
Anywho, in terms of 2022 games I've spent any significant amount of time playing, Kirby and the Forgotten Land was probably the most consistently enjoyable. Elden Ring was cool but the endgame got too samey and I ended up getting exhausted. Bloody Spell came out of Early Access in January and that was okay but it's about as jank as you would expect from a mid-budget Chinese character action game. Rune Factory 5 would have been a contender if its engine wasn't cobbled together with chewed gum and damp twigs.
There's man all over for you, blaming on his boots the faults of his feet.
Really glad Xenoblade 3 got nominated for GOTY, never would expected this outcome from the series being so niche, but it's getting the recognition it deserves. Elden Ring or GoW are obviously winning but it means a lot that Xenoblade was nominated in the first place.
One thing I find surprising is that Sonic Frontiers wasn't nominated for best OST/score.
As someone who has barely played 2022 games, I'm just happy for Xenoblade. Especially for music, because they were ROBBED of that category in 2018.
I didn't realize when typing this that Yasunori Mitsuda was the specific person being credited (maybe because the previous two games I associate more with ACE). I have no opinion on the specific soundtracks but I am all in on giving Yasunori Mitsuda an award.
speaking of music, it really stood out how not award worthy Metroid Dread's music was when last year they did the big orchestra medley for all the GOTY contenders and the song they chose for Dread is the one originally from Super Metroid. Because its the most memorable song in the game.
Like what is even the most memorable song that's actually new in that game? The lava area? The final boss theme because you're gonna hear it over and over again from dying? I'd say being chased by the E.M.M.I., but mostly just how it starts when you're found.
How many new IP will be shown with a CG trailer? I'm gonna try to count how many, because they are the most useless things in the world.
Who gets excited by a thing they don't know, with gameplay not shown? Who are these people? Do they exist? Are they real? Does anyone even remember most of what they premiered last year? So many question, so little time that will be given to actual awards.
