@NintendoByNature - Those were both great, somewhat under the radar candy options. I loved a good 5th Avenue, though they did tend to be a bit past their prime and sometimes smashed because they weren’t fast movers. The Zagnut probably had its biggest moment in 88 when Beetlejuice used a Zagnut Mini to lure in a fly so he could eat it while he was trapped in that haunted model town.
@Ninfan - You’re probably right on or really close with 50 years if you’re talking strictly video games. Pinball, other mechanical games of skill, and table top games have been around a lot longer, but moving pixels around a screen is still pretty young as far as hobbies go. It’s come a long way, and it will probably continue to evolve over the next 50 years.
@Anti-Matter You still have malls? They predict all malls in the US will be torn down within the next 10 years....many already have been. A few ultra luxury ones may remain - those seem to make money.
Soon it'll be Walmart or Amazon and nothing else. And if they don't deliver the item you needed today - you have to wait 2 days before you're even allowed to contact them and they'll refund or reship. Joy.
@NEStalgia without malls, I'd love to know how people will shop for clothes without trying them on. For me, I have to try them on. There's too much variation in clothing production to know if most things will fit - maybe this is a slim clothing issue. But, off-the-rack sizes are a gamble for me.
(I'm not gonna say online shopping & outsourcing clothing production is sucking money out of communities (It definitely has been (in the US)))
@bimmy-lee lol I remember that scene. And as much as I loved butterfingers, they also had a wierd 50/50 chance of being good or not. Really bothered me opening up a dry cracked BF.
@NintendoByNature - There’s nothing worse than buying a candy bar only to find out it’s been sitting around long enough that the weird, super fine white powder stuff is starting to show up. I’ve always assumed that’s the preservatives kicking in after a certain time has elapsed and starting the encasing process so the candy can survive five straight decades of nuclear war.
Don’t even get me started on broken Butterfingers. I like them too, but 95% of them are broken. I think Nestle has a position called Butterfinger Breaker and they’re great at their job. I think they started selling them in two pieces now because they know everyone is always bummed out about their broken Butterfingers and the minuscule amount of wasted bar in the process.
I texted a buddy in the candy biz about Zagnuts, and it turns out Hershey (his former company) still produces them in niche number. They’re hard to find. He’s going to have a couple for me next time I see him. Good ole Zagnuts.
The white powdery stuff on chocolate can happen to candy that is still good and in-date. I think it's mostly just a side effect of environmental conditions.
Huh, like maybe it’s an ingredient in the chocolate that can be separated and brought to the surface under certain conditions sort of like chocolate oxidation?
Apparently it's mostly just sugar and fat "blooming" due to moisture. For example, the box used to be in a cold place and then moved to a warm place and it made the chocolate "sweat". After a while, that moisture will make the sugar and/or fat react this way.
Makes sense. My real assumption was along those lines as opposed to the preservative theory I threw out there. I texted my candy friend about it, but it’s in a big, fast moving text chain. We’ll see if he responds, but he’ll just lie if it’s something creepy.
@NEStalgia

Malls are very much still a thing in Japan. Big cities like Kyoto and Osaka have train stations that also double as huge shopping complexes too. Even in rural Shiga near me we have a huge 2 story mall called "Viva City" with lots of shopping options and whenever I go there it's pretty busy.
On another note, Japan also still has Toys R Us. Which never shut down here, apparently because the Japanese branch was technically a different company.

@bimmy-lee yep, nestle is usually the culprit. But, i think the worst candy bar that suffers the white powder diseases is baby Ruth's. I've never had a soft, creamy one, all dry as the Sahara.
Good for you my man, I'm going to keep an eye myself. Haven't had one in so long I couldn't even begin to remember the taste. Zero bars are a nice underdog too. But i will say, the most elusive bar is the mars bar. Which is strange considering mars named their company after it, and I've never seen one in person.
@NintendoByNature - Yeah, Baby Ruth’s are really bad for that. Did you know Chappelle used a melty Baby Ruth as the prop for Tyrone Biggums’ alley poo in the intro to all his skits? I remember Mars bars when I was young. They were sort of like a Milky Way with nuts. I had to go to google. Turns out they were discontinued in the US in ‘02, but a Snickers Almond is the exact same thing in a Snickers wrapper.
@bimmy-lee i did know that I'm pretty sure! And wow, so I've had tons of mars bars then if thats the case. Thanks for the tip, my life is now complete.
@Octane What's a One Plus 3 model? Never heard of that. And I didn't say pin code, I mentioned that you already tried that, sort of like to strike off an option. I was thinking out loud, but on paper...
And the options you mention, make it sound like you hacked your phone with custom firmware. I never get any "bootloader" option. But anyway, I have no idea what's going on, but I'd still advise you to find a way to make a backup of your settings and data, and then do a factory reset, because it seems like the only solution.
One last thing I could think of is if you've changed/installed/updated anything recently, and if that's some kind of program or utility for which you need to log in, then that might be the password that you need. Maybe it's just the password of your linked e-mail account, who knows.
Well, that's all I could think of, good luck getting it fixed.
@bimmy-lee Commercial video gaming in the home has actually already been available since 1967, so we're already past the 50 year mark.
As for the white patina on chocolate: that's indeed what @Eel said, and it's a reaction of the fats and sugars in chocolate to quick or subsequent temperature or environmental changes, like drought or moisture, which makes the fats and sugars "sweat" through to the surface and then dry out again, creating that "old" chocolate look, but it's nothing bad, really, so it's still edible or usable for melting over deserts or whatever.
Oh, and original Mars bars didn't have peanuts in them. At least not the ones in Europe with the red and gold letters on a black wrapper. Over here it was just a soft nougat bar with a layer of caramel on top, encased in chocolate. Pretty meh, far as I'm concerned. We didn't have Zagnut bars over here, but we do have most of the other stuff, such as Twix, Snickers, MilkyWay, Kinder Bueno, Bounty, KitKat, Lion, Balisto, Toblerone and what not.
@NintendoByNature Mars bars elusive? I see them every day in supermarkets over here. Entire boxes and bags of them, in all sizes too.
'The console wars are like boobs: Sony and Microsoft fight over which ones look the nicest and Nintendo's are the most fun to play with.'
@NintendoByNature - Great idea. Maybe I’ll also make it a weird, crinkle and crunch ASMR video with a super closeup of my mouth just crunching a Zagnut while getting tons of crumbs in my beard.
@ThanosReXXX - So 53 years then. It seems like a pretty short period of time to go from bleep bloop moving squares to what we have today. Mars bars have a weird dual history. They were more like our Milky Way bars in your parts, and the same thing, but with almonds in the states. They discontinued the name here in ‘02, but continued making them as Snickers Almond. Weird little history for a historically significant candy bar. One of my favorite treats is to put a Snickers bar in the freezer for an hour or so, and then gnaw on it like it’s a chocolate brick.
@ThanosReXXX One Plus is a phone, and it's the third one, the One Plus 3
I don't install custom firmware or anything like that. I'm just your average casual phone user. It's just that the first thing that pops up is the screen asking for a password. By turning the phone off, and turning it on with the volume button pressed you enter a kinda safety mode like the advanced boot options screen on your PC; (this screen: https://www.xda-developers.com/files/2017/02/ONEPLUS-3T-VULN.... I guess that's the place where you can unroot your phone and all (I'm really not familiar with any of that TBH), but it's also probably my only solution to restoring any data before a factory reset. I'm going to take it to a specialty store to see if they can help me.
