Seems like they were trying to emulate the vibe of Beautiful Dreamer, but it just doesn't work.
This is seriously the most confusing of these I've seen & maybe it'll make more sense on a rewatch, but I honestly couldn't really follow what was actually happening (like it was the city itself dreaming & trying to rewrite Lum from reality since she's not a part of it's history or something, IDK?).

@EaglyPurahfan Welcome back! It is strange, I didn't know about Indiana Jones or Flash, but I knew about Elemental and Ruby Gillman being a box office flops, which is a shame, since I loved Ruby Gillman. I'm very thankful I saw it in theaters during its short run, if it gets pulled.
Yeah, it is worrying. I hope it's a fluke, because I've seen lots in the cartoon community on Twitter and YouTube really wanting Trolls to fail. The best cope they come up with is Trolls World Tour did poorly at box office and shouldn't get a sequel. Kind of easy to flop when theaters are closed and everyone is forced to stay home. Fans like myself were ready for Trolls World Tour, we had no choice but to stay at home in 2020. Fortunately, it did very, very well via VOD sales. This is also why I'm very thankful and fortunate to see it in a theater twice last summer.
I know I may be rambling, it's so sad there are people wanting certain animated movies to fail so they go away for good. I really grown to dislike the cartoon community over the past few years because of it.
I hope so too, it just landed on VOD services like Vudu and Apple, and I hope more see Ruby this way. Remember, VOD sales should be taken into account too. Things are different now, than they were years ago.
Cool, I always watch it whenever I can. Ruby Gillman may be the most recent new movie I've seen, but I did watch Trolls World Tour again recently, and Puss In Boots The Last Wish again last night. I watched Luca again awhile back.
With the Mario movie making over a billion and slew of other films making bank I think it’s bit silly to call this the death of cinema.
Indiana Jones is your old man’s franchise so it was never gonna do a billion and it’s only being called a flop as the budget was $300m for some insane reason and Flash is part of a dead brand with the lead actor literally a cult leader who kidnaps and grooms kids*. My teenage brothers who seems to have their finger on then pulse (well, they leave their house and talk to other teens at least) didn’t have a clue who Michael Keaton Batman was which is Flash’s big selling point nor Indiana Jones (despite going on the Indiana Jones ride at Disneyland!?) so it’s not shocking those films flopped.
Now the real death of cinema has already happened. People will only see those family friendly CGI smeared films in either cartoon or superhero form so studios have hard reduced making the mid-budget interesting films. Still there’s hope, tomorrow somehow two ambitious films are being released in indie darling Greta Gerwig’s subversive loving take on Barbie and fancy pants Nolan’s biopic about Oppenheimer who created atomic bombs for Americans to nuke people in the name of war. I’ve seen them both and both get thumbs up from me. Touchwood both do well to give Hollywood confidence to make something other than samey superhero and cartoon movies.
@EaglyPurahfan That's fine, I always thought superhero stuff was popular, so that's why it's a surprise to me. Maybe there's a bit a fatigue with the ongoing MCU stuff. Haven't really followed it outside the Thor movies and Guardians of the Galaxy, the latter being because I'm a bit of a space nerd, but moments of Thor gave into that too.
Indeed, I do find it sad Trolls haters and the cartoon community conveniently ignore what was going on in the world at the time. It's not like fans like myself were like "we no longer want to see this," when in reality we couldn't go to the theater. I did rent the movie during its VOD release, and still went to the theater, albeit two years after it came to DVD (by coincidence, I saw Trolls World Tour in theaters the two years from the day the DVD came out).
It is very disheartening to see how animation "fans" are within Twitter and to an extent YouTube. It's rather sad they're celebrating Ruby Gillman failing at box office. Wouldn't be surprised if they didn't want to see the movie, despite wanting more original animated works, vs. animated works based on existing properties.
I have to agree it is a waste of time. While I don't use Twitter, I did notice this more on YouTube in videos or comment sections.
I hope it's not entirely in the future. Since the pandemic ended, my friend and I went to theaters more. I use to see the occasional movie I wanted to see the most, now my friend and I go a little bit more than that. We've saw some recent movies, and older stuff in theaters since the pandemic rules were lifted. VOD/streaming is nice, but it can never replace being in a room with other fans watching movies on a big screen with surround sound (holy cow I heard sounds and saw details in Trolls World Tour I never noticed simply watching at home).
Sounds like something I would watch, actually, I heard of Sweet Tooth too. Never looked into it beyond the cast as one of the cast members looked like someone from a movie I saw, specifically Playing With Fire. The movie that stars John Cena as a smoke jumper, and makes various My Little Pony references (these were fun being a fan of the show, lol).
@Link-Hero In terms of spending, for me personally, I have to be choosy with movies I want to see because of budget reasons. A few weeks ago I took my friend to see Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken, and the next movie I plan to see is Trolls Band Together in November (with my friend hopefully since he likes Trolls too). I already set money aside for it too.
If my friend wants to see a movie and invites me along, I may go then, for now, I have a bit of a wait before I go see a movie I want to see. Yeah budget is a deciding factor for me too.
FWIW, I found myself going to the movies with my friend more post-pandemic. I use to go maybe once or twice a year in the past.
Okay, just watched Arrival with Amy Adams and Jeremy Renner:
10/10
Amazing visuals, GREAT STORY with a message, a great Twist...
Hot take time: it got shafted at the LaLa Land Oscar's.
It should have won.
No questions.
@EaglyPurahfan Oh ok, I don't follow the MCU, so I didn't know about all of that. My friend loves the MCU, he even showed me Infinity War and Endgame. Even though it's not part of the MCU, he does want to show me Spider-Verse one day.
You can't. Somehow, I've seen people spin Trolls World Tour as a box office failure, despite theaters being closed and ignoring the money made via VOD sales. It was a game changer, and some studios still will have a movie on demand and in theaters. Just look at the Super Mario Bros movie, it was in theaters after it went on demand. Tell me about it, the fear of what was going on actually got to me, and made me worry a lot.
Didn't know about the Pikmin fanbase, FWIW, the few interactions I've had with other Trolls fans on social media, they're all nice. I've only seen two toxic Trolls fans on YouTube, but for the most part, Trolls fans are cool. Definitely a downside. Thing is with the cartoon community, they take animated movies way to seriously from what I noticed, and if someone likes a movie they don't like, they usually bully them. One of those movies is of course the Trolls movies. I remember someone bullying a Trolls fan just because Trolls Band Together was their most anticipated movie, and not Spider-Verse. Shame toxic fanbases exist. Really saddens me, and makes the community very unwelcoming, especially being a Trolls fan.
Me too, after seeing Trolls World Tour in a theater last summer, I started keeping an eye out at theaters that are willing to replay older movies. It's a great option for seeing a movie you missed out on during its initial run, but also, great for trying to see a pandemic era movie that skipped theaters (one of the theaters I saw Trolls World Tour in also showed Scoob that summer). I've been going more ever since the pandemic rules ended, and enjoyed it each time.
In Playing With Fire, the boy in the movie is actually an actor in Sweet Tooth. I noticed he looked familar when I saw the preview for the show, and when I looked it up, it was the same actor. Cool, I had a feeling it may have been a bit dark, that's what the previews I've seen gave me the impression of.
So when I saw "Ruby Gillman" on Tuesday, I started to realize how much the movie feels an awful lot like "Turning Red", with things like the whole "turn into a giant kraken" (except it's from submerging underwater rather than with strong emotions), the main character having a trio of friends (one of whom, like Priya, is gothic)...I kept telling myself "it's a coincidence", but once it's mentioned that only the women in the family can turn into giant krakens, I suspected outright plagiarism. When the credits started rolling I said "It feels like Turning Red!" and a woman next to me agreed.
@HenryKibble My friend and I saw the movie a few days after release. He actually thought it was similar to Turning Red, while I pointed out some of it reminded me of Luca. Namely the idea that Ruby turned into a kraken after being underwater, similar to how Luca turned into a sea monster when under water. At least I liked Ruby's mom more than the mom in Turning Red, she was more understanding.
Felt like a mix of both to me. Both of us loved the movie, now I'm just waiting for Ruby Gillman to come out on Blu-Ray and DVD.
watching the old Possession movie on Joe Bob Briggs' Last Drive In on Shudder this weekend along with binge watching some episodes of Season 2 of Fringe on Freevee
Checking my listings, Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken is no longer in any local theater. I feel fortunate enough to see it on the big screen, absolutely loved this movie. It's so sad it didn't do well at box office.
The resident Trolls superfan! Saw Trolls Band Together via early access and absolutely loved it!
@Sunsy
Have you watched new Doraemon movie at theatre?
I have watched new Doraemon movie Sky Utopia this afternoon and only certain Cinema XXI in my hometown have the schedule to air that movie since Barbie movie and other movies are dominating the schedules.
It was really great Doraemon movie with some surprising twist.
Decided to rewatch Coco for the 3rd time after feeling in the mood for it again and goddamnit: it may be my third time watching it but I still start to cry every time at Remember Me 😭
Mario Maker 2 Maker ID: YT1-0Q2-YFF
Please ask for permission before using my FC!
All I'm going to say is, watch Nimona. Really good movie that I do not want to spoil.
@Anti-Matter Nope, sadly the US doesn't really get Doraemon movies, the only one listed on Fandango is one from 2007. Sad really since I saw some Doraemon on a TV at the local Chinese resturant, while waiting for food, and it looked cute. My kind of thing.
