I watched it again, and again i can't help but think that if we'd gotten this past episode much earlier in the season it would have gone over better. I am hoping that it is a case of (as Darlton has alluded) "getting stuff out of the way" so that they can go full throttle till the end and not have to sidetrack for some background info. We're going to be left with plenty of unsolved mysteries, but for me that's okay as long as the conclusion is good (like BSG).
At any rate, for me no episode of Lost can be worse than the one with Jack getting the tattoo in Thailand ("Stranger in a Strange Land") from Season 3. I almost stopped watching altogether around then. Damn Bai Ling.
I realized today that at this same time next week, Lost will be done. Holy crap! {sob}
Tonight is going to be epic, tonight is going to be epic, tonight is going to be epic, tonight is going to be epic, tonight is going to be epic......Don't mind me just talking myself up here.
@the shpydar: I know what you mean about that episode, it was serious filler, but... "He walks among us, but he is not one of us" could well come into play tonight (for you lucky guys) or at the weekend (when Lost ends, zomgwtfnonono).
@JayArr: I'd just play Monster Hunter if I were you, I doubt it'll be anything special.
@Machu: So, have you chilled out yet? If not, maybe you should lower your expectations and just enjoy what's left of the show. Kapeesh?
About an hour to go 'till the new ep ... this Thursday (the 20th) is my birthday, so i don't know if it's a gift or curse that i'm getting the wrap-up of Lost this weekend!
The ambiguous FiOS TV preview is "Locke works on coming up with a new strategy; Jack's group goes searching for Desmond." And they have one up for the finale too: "As Locke moves forward with his calculated plan to escape, the remaining survivors of Oceanic flight 815 become involved in the final confrontation between the forces of good and evil, both on the island and within themselves."
So besides that hokey ass water to wine scene I really liked last nights episode. Benjamin Linus returning to evil form. Yes! The ATL coming to a climax is looking very promising. Also, the last thing Smockey said. All together last night renewed my faith in the show and my anticipation for the climax. I may not like the reason for the island exsistance(seems like they are going full religion) but the juicy drama and epic edge of your seat nature of the show is going to be full steam ahead on Sunday. I can't wait!
Great episode. Watched it again this evening after work. So much goodness -- and clarity! That's the way you answer questions! "How'd you get back here Charles?" Boom -- answer. "Why was my name crossed off?" Boom -- answer. "If you can be smoke whenever you want, why do you walk around?" Boom -- answer. Great, great episode.
Many GREAT lines, but the top for me right is: "Is that a question, Jack?" "No." "Good!"
Sawyer was clearly devastated throughout the episode. Even after Jack's reassurance, you know James is going to be doing something BIG for redemption.
That better not have been the end of Richard (i don't think so, but ... ) And hey, where he hell was Claire this ep? Still back on Hydra? Hmm ...
Water to wine? I didn't think that happened there, just that Jacob "blessed" (or whatever) the water before filling the cup. There was certainly an allusion to that, but i don't think that happened literally in the episode. It worked for me to mirror the Mother-Jacob scene from last week (obviously), but the best was the expression on ... The Chosen Candidate's (heh, just in case 'Chu skims past!) ... face after drinking -- some sort of instant awareness. Nice.
This finale is going to kick serious ash (pun intended)!
Great episode, lots of fun on and off-island. I have some issues (of course), and am deeply disappointed the show has started relying heavily on spirituality, but hey, I'll wait and see what happens.
I'll discuss the episodes many awesome moments when I have more time.
edit: which is now Excellent episode, it was a joy to get back to relative normality, although the initial moments on the beach were softened by the confusing gap in-between the events on the sub, and now. It was funny seeing Jack stitching up Kate, another mirror of an early event, awesome. When Jack and crew decided they had to kill Smokey, I though 'how?', but then remembered Hurley had stashed some ash and that it could come in handy. No sooner had I thought that, mini-Jacob pinches it and runs off. So, Jacob confirms that while there is some remnants of his remains, he can appear quite happily on the Island. I assume this is to do with the power of the light/exotic matter. But, how did Michael appear then? He was blown to bits on the boat, and there are no remnants of him on the island. :/ Jacob also admitted to his mistake, in creating you know who. Now, this pretty much confirms that his mother didn't have smoke powers, and now I am dragged back to a filled in well and a burning village, and asking myself how? Will I get an answer? No, probably not!
The meeting between Jacob and the A-Team was so frakking sweet, it felt like I had been waiting so long for just a simple and down to earth conversation. There was only one choice for the role, and for me it was a real pay-off seeing Jack stand forth and take the torch so willingly. I too loved that line shpydaydude, fantastic. Can't wait to see how Jack behaves in the finale.
ATL was equally as cool, especially the scenes with Ben getting smacked in the face back at the dock, the scene with Ben & John in the nurses office, and the scene between Jack and John (I'm gonna miss seeing those two together). The jail break was sweet, especially when we saw who was responsible. Why isn't she ready though? Anyway, Hurleys complete awareness was a joy to behold. He's in on the plan and has the funds to finance it. Go Desmondo!
The black dress. If there's one thing that will wake Jack up, it'll be seeing Kate looking extra hot in that dress. And who the heck is Jack's lad's mother? I imagine it'll be quite a surprise.
Not happy about how Widmore's arc played out, not at all. It seems the writers are just brushing a few things under the rug so they don't get in the way, hhm. I hope Richard isn't one of those things. :/
What's Ben up to? I hope has one more double cross left in him, it would be most fitting.
And wasn't it nice seeing Roosseau again.
So many great things happened, and now we're set up for an epic finale.
I'm still sour though, they bombarded me with science for 5 seasons and now I'm told that these pockets of exotic matter that are dotted around the globe are the source of 'the light within us all' :/ I'm making a big assumption that the light is indeed the exotic matter, but it has to be, surely?
I am a man of science, and will need a suitable explanation before the final credits roll.
edit: oh god, I did it again! pls excuse the wall of aimless thought D:
Probably should have put the "Water to Wine" scene in quotes. Obviously, there is no way to know if tit was wine but that , to me, was one of the most obvious symbolism scenes I've scene in the show.
I'm with you on the Richard thing. I really hope that wasn't his death. After alll that talk of purpose and nothing panning out with it so far. Like you, I think he'll pop up in the finale as well. I also think Jin is going to to show as well.
On the Mother, i don't know if it's now confirmed that Mother wasn't a Smokey Mark I, but after watching that episode over, it is conciveable that she killed the villagers herself -- when Jacob is dragging him, Smokey says "She burned them all!", so it is feasible that maybe she torched the village while they slept? It's soemthing that probably won't be answered, but not a big deal to me anymore.
I loved ATL Hurley -- "Oh hey, I didn't know Ana Lucia would be here!" Haveta wonder, do the "enlightened" ATL'ers know everything, or what? WHAT IS THE ATL!?!? Well, guess we'll find out in just a few days!
I was wondering if Juliet will turn out to be David's mom? No reason really to think that beyond everyone all being nuts about Juliet's last lines of "It worked" and "We can get coffee, we'll go dutch" being a refernce to ATL-her meeting ATL-Sawyer. Not too sure on how likely, but i would think that David's mom (if it matters who she is at all) would be someone we're familiar with.
And i'm totally expecting a Ben double-cross/triple-cross. Sure, he killed Widmore and seeminlgy is helping Smokey, but we all know Ben is far more crafty than the average bear. Or average bug-eyed creepy guy. I was happy for ATL-Ben, with Alex and Rousseau, very sweet scenes.
I personally never expected full-on scientific explanations for everything (no matter how many times Darlton implied that everything could be explained in that respect), though i would prefer that (to an extent) if only in the sense that, writing-wise, allowing for "mystical" explanations gives writers shortcuts or cop-outs and can lead to lazy uninspired writing. Of course, that's not always the case (BSG would be a great example, though that series always had faith and "religion" as central aspects whereas Lost has always been more about the conflict between science and faith ... hmm, where would Cavil fit on the Island? =) )
OK, I'll take your point about them all being burned in their sleep, but filling in the well in such a manner would have taken her half a day. Again, we'll probably never know, and I shall just have to let go. but like John, I shall be reluctant
Who knows what is going on in the ATL and why Desmondo see's the importance of gathering our heroes together. My mind can't conceive what (if anything) will happen once realization reaches them all. Perhaps they all need to be together (ala Ajira) before they can rip the 'Verse a new one, or whatever it is Desmondo hopes to achieve (assuming he knows). I hope it's mind-bending I really do!
So yeah, I have always expected a scientific explanation, as you say, that is what was promised when theories of purgatory and what-not were flying about early on. My imagination can stretch quite far, so long as there is some basis behind 'the matter' and it's capabilities. There is no 'inner light' inside you and I, so why should I just accept that is the case in this show.
And as for Kara Thrace. She was always my angel, my kick-ass no-nonsense sexy bitch of an angel. But then... It still annoys me they did that. An unanswered question that I have to live with. My two favourite sci-fi shows may end up the same. Absolutely awesome, but with a glaring fault at the end. That is why I need to know what exotic matter is. It has been responsible for so much, and was the reason Dharma were there in the first place. I need closure.
It won't stop me enjoying the finale, but, I may not enjoy it as much as I could have.
Cool! ABC is showing the pilot episode(s) right now (Saturday night, 8-10pm), complete with fully up-to-date "enhanced" captions (for instance, they mention in the opening scene how the bamboo field is near the Heart of the Island; how the plane was brought there for a purpose, etc).
I watched the pilot yesterday, and a couple of others. Can't wait till tomorrow!
I know I'll get the answers I need, no way they would introduce so many factors then cop out. T'would be career suicide I tells ya. Although, I have read that Darlton are going to be in hiding for the next few days. Uhoh!
So, I guess a few million death threats are being written now.
