Hmm… struggling to think of any mushroom characters that aren’t the obvious Mario candidates. And of them, I can’t think of anyone who is a rip off or has been ripped off.

So the superficial links between Imajin/Papa from Doki Doki Panic and Toad seem too obvious (and that wasn’t a Gameboy game). Link’s Awakening was a Gameboy and is stuffed with Mario references, but none of them seem to stuck out particularly.

I’m rather stumped! I know I’m asking for a lot of handholding here, but… would we get the other franchise, too?
