Assuming your premise is true, which I am somewhat inclined to agree with, wouldn't it make sense for the game that pioneered the style to be a little bland when compared to its predecessors?
Well yeah, but that doesn't really change...anything unless you take "innovation for the time" as a, if not the, key importance for how good a game is. And if you do use that argument, my rebuttal would be Megaman Legend's existance anyway. Zelda usually serves as the best counterpoint to my signature because of the worthwhile evolution of a series.
Actually a great number of people consider innovation for how great a game is all the time. So..........yeah.
Although I'm not sure how any of this pertains to my point that it makes sense that it would be more bland. It needed to lay the groundwork.
Most ignorance is vincible ignorance. We don't know because we don't want to know.
Well you were spot on to bring up Megaman Legends. Sometimes I forget about it a game that probably deserves a little more respect than it gets including from me.

The entire series is amazing! If you're looking for a Zelda game that will take a long time to complete along with tough difficulty to challenge you, and amazing intuitive controls that immerse you like no other game, go with Skyward Sword. If you want an extremely unique adventure with nice calm yet wonderful settings go with Wind Waker or Majora's Mask. If you want an adventure filled with allot of dungeons, excitement, and danger go with Ocarina of Time, Twilight Princess and/or Link to the Past.
But I think if you start with Ocarina of Time, you're just going to be hoping the all the other games surpass it, possibly.
Which most of then do, so long as you're not taken in by hype or blinded by nostalgia.
Yeah, Ocarina is kinda bland compared to some of the later Zelda games
Agreed. Still very good, and great to start with. But after replaying it last year and this year, it's pretty far from my favorite Zelda.
Wow I botched that the first time

It would...if it actually laid any real groundwork. Outside of the combat system, most of the "groundwork" was already done in A Link To The Past. This was the game that tried to transfer the Zelda formula to 3D, while also trying to evolve it. Yet I can't help but feel that it failed to surpass even its direct predecessor in any way, and was in many ways outdone by the games that followed.
Yeah I don't much agree with that at all. If that is the case lets just take it back to the original. Forcing all those object to work in an added dimension in the first console generation to do that required groundwork.
Edit: as per your edit I actually do agree I prefer actually both its direct predecessor and successor. so we agree on that.
Ocarina of Time is a good place to start, as it is pretty simple. Though I love Wind Waker, it could be a little off-putting because of the long back-and-forth boat rides, so I wouldn't start there quite yet. It's still good, however, and maybe I'm wrong. Kinda the same for Skyward Sword, but both are exceptionally good.
I just started Majora's Mask on the Wii and I love it.Next is Oot 3D,then maybe Skyward Sword.

I'd start with 2D Zelda games, personally. That's the grassroots of the series. It's amazing to see how LoZ progressed and became excellent 3D games. You can still see a lot of the influence from the oldschool Zeldas.
Congrats, TC, on becoming a Zelda fan. It's a great series!!!
I would suggest you start with Ocarina of Time, then Twilight Princess and then Skyward Sword.
The controls in Twilight Princess feel a little downgraded after playing Skyward Sword because you can't control the exact direction of the slash (lots of special attacks to make up for that) so I would save Skyward Sword for after Twilight Princess.
Don't get me wrong, Twilight Princess is a great game, I consider it one of the best.
Twilight Princess and Ocarina of Time both follow the "regular" Zelda pattern and are a good place to start.
I'd say play Ocarina of Time and/or Skyward Sword. Those are in my opinion the two best in the series.

Retro games, Modern games, all AWESOME!!!

I firmly believe this also. For me I would rate & recommend my top 5 in this Order.....
Skyward Sword 11/10 = Literally flawless in every way, always something interesting around every single corner literally, a Perfect Game & then some!! Only game I would ever consider giving a 11/10 score besides one other game.
Ocarina of Time 10/10 = Perfect game for it's time and never a dull moment.
A Link to the Past 10/10 = Another Perfect game for it's time and never a dull moment.
Twilight Princess 9.9/10 = If it weren't for the disappointing lack of challenging bosses I would have had this one even higher than OOT for many reasons. Despite that though this is still a brilliant craft of a game overall.
Wind Waker 9.8/10 = Another Amazing Zelda game and one of the most unique. Could've used an extra dungeon or two, a few more islands to explore, and a little bit less sailing. A Fantastic Game either way.

@Drobotic So how is your Zelda Series Experience coming along these days? Have you moved onto another Zelda game yet?
Actually,I haven't played MM in a while.Maybe I'll wait for Oot 3D for Christmas. But Zelda is something new for me.All the weir characters and creepy enemies keep me excited and engaged.Though,MM didn't have the kind of story I expected.I might also wait to see if Wind Waker makes its move over to Wii U Virtual Console.
