You can start with pretty much anything. Each story is a stand alone one. Even the very few direct sequels baraly have any relation with each other. I would recommend Ocarina of Time, A Link to the Past, Twilight Princess or Link's Awekening becuase those are the more standard Zelda game and they can give you a bether impression on the core gameplay of the series. Oh, and Zleda games doesn't really have complex stories.
Maybe when I get a Gamecube controller for my Wii.

Oot first, then majora if you want to fully enjoy the story. Skyward Sword is the first Chronologically, so you could go with that. But Ocarina of Time requires no prior knowledge of the series and is a great introduction to it, so I would suggest that first. :3

Start with Ocarina of Time, especially the 3D version. It's a fantastic game even now, things like controls are extremely easy to get used to and you'll never get too stuck/lost with things like the hint movies. Really, I didn't even play this game past the third dungeon when I first tried it on Gamecube, I didn't even grow up with it in the Nintendo 64 days, and I still found Ocarina of Time 3D one of the most enjoyable games I've ever played. I never got particularly stuck, never got too lost and never thought anything had aged poorly.
I would say that any Zelda game would be good. OOT 3D is a remastered classic that has a good story and it is definitely fun. Skyward Sword and Twilight Princess are excellent console titles that I can recommend. The only thing you would miss by playing Skyward Sword first are some inside jokes, but those shouldn't be something to stop you from trying it. The eshop also has Link's Awakening if you want to start cheap. Anyways, I hope you get into the Zelda series and enjoy it.
Is becoming a fan really something you decide to do?
I thought the wording was a bit strange, myself. Personally, I would probably call it "getting into" something if I was, well, thinking of getting into it.
