I-U
  • Metroid Prime Hunters, Metroid Prime: Federation Force and Metroid: Other M - all 3 are Top 5 games within the Metroid Series, regardless of how untraditional they are
  • Pokemon Let's Go and Pokemon Sword - best generation of Pokemon games since Generation 5
  • Hey! Pikmin - enjoyed this one more than I did Pikmin 3
  • Star Fox Command - my favorite Star Fox game, liked the free roaming combat scenarios more so than the rail design of Star Fox 64

As far as Nintendo is concerned, I guess Paper Mario: Sticker Star. Not the greatest game by any means, & I think Origami King is a much better take on the newer direction they're taking the series, but I still thought it was pretty cute.

Otherwise, I guess stuff like Front Mission: Evolved & the Order 1886. Again, definitely not the best games ever, but if you like third person shooters they're okay if you can get them cheap (then again, I think I got 1886 for like $5, so it'd have to had been utterly atrocious if I didn't think it was worth it for that price, lol).

@RR529 Oh I forgot to put OGK on there because I love that game, Even tho the battle system sucks (In my opinion) The bosses are actually very good, and the toads feel like different people.

Generally when I see Phantom Hourglass mentioned, it's negative, but I could be over exaggerating how disliked it is. I've checked the community rankings here and the user reviews on Metacritic, which seem to indicate a decent reception, so I'll drop that from my list. Hated is too strong for it. Hourglass would be better for an underappreciated list.

Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric, despite its technical issues, I actually had fun playing this one. Really liked exploring the levels and playing as Amy. Still play it from time to time.

Sonic the Hedgehog Genesis on GBA, like it as much as any other version of Sonic 1 I played. Even though it had slow down problems, I just like having Sonic 1 on the go back then.

Balan Wonderworld, I just enjoyed it, liked exploring the surreal worlds the game offered.

Star Fox Zero, I see people dislike this game often online, but I loved it.

Frozen Free Fall: Snowball Fight, I loved this one because I like Frozen, most people on Steam hated this one. Basically was a console/PC version of the mobile game with multiplayer.

@Snatcher Another one here for Sonic Unleashed, albeit the Wii version for me. I think the Wii version is disliked by fans since I see more talk about the Xbox 360/PS3 version.

@Sunsy hey sonic genesis on GBA was my first sonic game! Unless you count that gamecube demo disk with a demo for SA1.

I really do enjoy Paper Mario: Color Splash. I agree that the combat isn't that great and was better in the first two entries. However, the music, writing/dialogue, graphics, and level design are just fantastic. It's still a total joy to play today. I understand why it wasn't too critically acclaimed, but I find it as just pure fun.

Star Fox Zero. Yes the level design is kinda basic and the controls are pretty gimmicky, but similar to Color Splash, it's just pure fun. It isn't anything special or revolutionary, but it's enjoyable. Plus I got the game bundled with Star Fox Guard as well which is actually a lot of fun.

@Greatluigi Cool, I remember getting it as a surprise. Mom and I went to Circuit City to buy Sonic Advance 3. Right before leaving, she told me to go back and grab that other Sonic game, and treated me to it. I didn't even ask. Because of the surprise factor, it always brings back that fun memory my mom and I had.

Star Fox Zero is good enough that I enjoyed playing it and despite the motion controls, it otherwise plays exactly like 64, which is really praise worthy. But its not good enough to even remotely live up to 64 or be a truly great, underappreciated gem like what I want to say it is. But the hate it got was over the top, especially as a game where I was getting used to the motion controls after the one level I played at PAX before it came out.

Yoshi's Story is also better than people remember and no amount of weird level structure or lack of difficulty will change that.

By contrast Enter the Matrix is a bad game, but I kinda liked it. But its still not a good game.

The Urbz: Sims in the City for DS/GBA received a very poor review here (3/10 from memory), but I recall the review being pretty poorly written. The game was/is great and is a fine sequel to the excellent The Sims: Bustin’ Out on GBA, being one of my favourite games of all time. The Urbz includes many QoL improvements and more content, but the new art style and aesthetic/music choices weren’t quite as endearing, hence why I prefer Bustin’ Out.

I loved Bustin’ Out then and I love it all the same 18 years later. Losing the handheld/adventure based Sims games still stings, and I doubt that we’ll ever see such games again. Especially not in the hands of modern EA. The Sims 2 on DS, which follows The Urbz, is also a good game, but a little lacking in content due to the new 3D engine. It seemed to set a promising foundation for future games, but EA decided to give us irredeemabjle garbage instead.

Another critically panned game that I really enjoyed back in the day was the DS launch title Sprung, which is a text-adventure dating game with two campaigns. Unfortunately, it’s mostly linear, and there is a lot of trial and error involved which can become particularly irritating, but the silly writing made up for it (and trashy dating sims are a guilty pleasure).

@I-U some really good examples there. I really enjoyed Star Fox Command too as it was different (I don’t care if games are considered ‘real’ entries in series or not). Hey! Pikmin, whilst I’ve not finished it or Prime Hunters, I’ve enjoyed what I played. Other M was good fun too, even if it isn’t on the level of Prime or Dread. I haven’t gotten around to Federation Force or Sticker Star but I don’t get hung up on whether a game matches other entries in a series as long as it is enjoyable in itself.
