@JaxonH Tropical Freeze is a weird one. Nearly everyone who's played it (including myself) absolutely loves it and thinks it's one of the best 2D platformers of all time. And yet it's a surprisingly low seller. It definitely deserves to be talked about more.

I think this generation of gamers lacks the 2D platforming skill people who grew up with 90's platformers have, because they don't play 2D platformers often, and when they do, it's mid-tier, which gives them the impression the genre sucks.
So when they see DKC Tropical Freeze, having not played it, they equate it in their mind to whatever random 2D platformers they happened to have played, and it doesn't register interest. Or, they did play it, and lacking skill, they struggled to grasp the finer mechanics such as rolls and mid-air jumping, and complain about the weight "not feeling like Mario" as if every 2D platformer is supposed to be homogeneous with NSMBU, failing to appreciate the finely crafted weight and momentum.

@JaxonH I'm afraid I may have fallen victim to some of that, don't get me wrong, I love 2D platformers, Super Mario World and Mario Maker 2 are some of my favorite games and I really liked DKC Returns. But when I tried out Tropical Freeze, I beat the first world/collection of levels and something just felt off. I need to go back and pick it back up, it may have been the fact that I just played the first world, that I was playing on WiiU, or it just felt very similar to DKC Returns.
Games I'm playing right now:
OoT N64
DK64 N64
Lego LotR Wii
Spirit Tracks DS
TotK Switch
