@Mickeymac Turns out the upcoming Last Exile series is a sequel with brand new characters, not a reboot. It's being done by the same director. Even better!
Anyone got any recommendations based on the anime I've watched and love?
Fullmetal Alchemist / Brotherhood Eden of the East Darker Than Black The Girl Who Leapt Through Time
Guess I'm looking for an anime that's balanced on action and a strong storyline, with likable characters and a sense of humour. I wouldn't mind watching something a little less action-y and more slice of life, though, provided it's quite funny, but it doesn't have to be all-out comedy. Looking for something where the serious side and the tragedy is just as gripping as the funnies.

Christ I'm specific
Hey at least you know what you like
I too like a balance between action and a strong story. However, I'm also obsessed with Mecha, so anything I could recommend to you would be a mecha show. I'm also not sure what's available in UK. With that said, I am interested in branching out, so if anyone else has anything I'd appreciate it, too.
As for recommendations for you...is Full Metal Panic available to you?
^ I can import DVDs if it's not available here, that's how I watched the first season of FMA - bought the 4-DVD box sets from US for much cheaper than buying the individual DVDs here (I removed the region lock from my DVD player). I'll see what Full Metal Panic's about.
@Raylax Agree with Mickeymac, I think you'd enjoy Full Metal Panic. A few other recommendations:
Ah! My Goddess - Slice of life-ish (possibly the first one ever) but with plenty of humour and some interesting magic-based action. Hilarious show. A real anime classic.
Chrno Crusade - Great shounen series with plenty of humour, action, emotion and the interesting setting of New York in the 1920s. Something of a downer ending, but don't let that turn you away because it's well worth it.
Gate Keepers - Awesome shounen anime with a great story, awesome action, great villains and an interesting fighting "system". Gets more serious as it goes along and properly so. Some memorable episodes still send chills down my spine. I couldn't recommend this series enough, actually.
History's Strongest Disciple Kenichi - Great martial arts anime with lots of humour and realistic fighting. Massively overlooked in the west but the manga is greatly loved in Japan.
Scrapped Princess - A little more serious than the others (except maybe Gate Keepers) but has a deep story and swords and sorcery-type action. It starts out like quite a cliche shounen medieval fantasy show but it becomes really unique by the end. This show is not what it seems at all.
The Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi - Slice of life with a great story and lots of humour. A number of unexpected action sequences too.
Yakitate!! Japan - It's about baking bread. NEED I SAY MORE?! (I'm serious, I think you'd love this.) One of the funniest anime I've ever watched.
Cool. Some other good ones that come to mind: Giant Robo, Code Geass, Macross, Big-O, and I'm looking for an excuse to recommend Gunbuster and Megazone-23, but I'm not sure if they'd be to your tastes. And yes, these are all Mecha, like I said, I'm obsessed.
Recently finished that's not Mecha:
Iria - Zeiram The Animation - I really like this one. Solid voice acting, a good plot, and likeable characters. The world was especially interesting, with lots of detail and a look that feels nostalgic yet futuristic. Love it. Ending was a little disappointing (Ugh, if the weak point was that obvious why did it take 6 episodes to figure it out?!), but it certainly didn't ruin it.
After that I was struggling to choose between Cyber City Oedo 808 and Idol Project, but Idol Project ultimately won out. It's pretty funny stuff with lots of fan service. Hopefully I'll actually finish this show. I know it's only 4 episodes long, but I'm notorious for dropping comedies.
BTW, if anyone's wondering where I find out about these no-name shows, a lot of them I found through random 'excursions' on Youtube and Wikipedia.
@Raylax: Hunter X Hunter. DO IT. It's got you covered in everything but a strong plot. Plot isn't so important in HxH, but the characters and how they react to everything is.

Trippyyyyyyyyyy (I know this is the Haruhi-chan online shorts as opposed to the actual TV series, I just read about it on Wikipedia and looked it up xD)
The new Bleach DVD's coming out at the end of this month. I plan on getting it, but I feel like they got lazy with 'em. Instead of over 24 Episodes in a 5 DVD box set, they only have 12 Episode sets in 3 DVDs; plus they also got rid of the awesome book-style layout and inside-the-box pictures.
Wow, that's a huge downgrade. They still charging the same?
No, they're about $30 cheaper. But I'd rather have those awesome collector's boxes instead of these lazy, half-assed DVDs.
I've narrowed it down to Suzumiya Haruhi and Hayate the Combat Butler (on recommendation by a friend). Will probably check out Haruhi first, on the basic fact that it's available here and cheaper (complete season one for £15, compared to importing Hayate's 8 seven/six-episode disks at £15 each + P&P), but I really want to check out Hayate at some point too. Hopefully they'll do a compilation set at some point.
That reminds me, I need to watch Code Geass some time. Apparently it's quite similar to Death Note?
Try, a exact copy and paste of it's plot made completely ridiculous. Some people like it, but I have no idea why...something about the show just comes off as overly serious about too many silly things.

It gets better in R2, and it also branches off from being Death Note-with-Mechs. I like it a lot. Probably one of the best I've seen. With that said, I never cared for Death Note, and I hated the first season of Code Geass.
Oh really? The first season is all I've seen...I think. I quit when Lelouch woke up on a island or something? I can't really remember...Maybe I'll give it another chance...
It's King Kazma from Summer Wars!

I had a hunch it was from Summer Wars. Thank you. And seriously, give it another chance. The Second Season is great. I really need to watch Summer Wars
Seriously, right before you posted I was thinking "is he ever gonna get back to us on that?" It's so weird. Yeah, sucks that they're getting lazier with those, man. Reminds me of those S.A.V.E. sets Funi's got going which I hear are pretty "cheap" if you know what I mean. I mean, I'm the kinda guy who'll buy the cheaper stuff no matter what, but I can still understand wanting more for your money and having something nice for your collection.
I got The OVA, too. I haven't watched it yet but I plan to watch it this weekend. I did watch some of the seriews. though. Wasn't really my thing, at least at the moment. I think I mentioned before, I don't really go for comedies, especially anime ones. I have liked a few, namely Excel Saga, FLCL, and recently Idol Project.
Speaking of which - Recently finished:
Idol Project - Well, this one really surprised me here. I had never really heard of it, nor did I really know what it was about, but I assumed it was a cutsy comedy. And it was, but I enjoyed it much more than I expected. Specifically I really liked the characters and art, and I loved the humor, and I normally don't go for comedy. I also liked the story - it was decent, and did a good enough job of holding my attention and making me wonder what would happen next.
The world(s) in particular were interesting, and the sci-fi/whimsical fantasy setting really helped it hold my attention. They were very imaginitive and surreal, though perhaps I should come to expect that from an anime. Still, it surprises me every time.
Oh, and I can't forget the music: There was a lot of vocal songs and I thought most of them were pretty good. I wish I could get ahold of the soundtrack, but I can't seem to find it anywhere. Probably too old.
The Voice acting was decent, but I probably should watch it again in Japanese some time, since as much as I liked the english cast (mostly because I recognized them from Martian Successor Nadesico and other anime I liked), I think the Japanese cast would've been better. Just a hunch.
You know, I actually had a pretty solid complaint about this show, but I forgot what it was. EDIT: I just remembered what the one big negative I had with it was: Fanservice. It has a LOT of it. Not the worst I've seen, and some of it was pretty entertaining, but it still got on my nerves sometimes. Overall I'd say it was pretty good. Lots to love, loads to laugh at. It was very surreal and fun to watch, nice to listen to, and I enjoyed pretty much every minute of it. I did have to skip some stupid parts, but that happens all the time when I watch comedies. Honestly, people hate watching them with me.
@Mickmac: YOU SO DO. It's the best anime movie ever, IMO. Make sure you watch the Digimon movie (or the one titled His War Games in Japanese if you'd rather watch it subbed) first because it's so brilliant to see how the director used the exact same plot to show how he's grown as a storyteller. And I shall give it another chance! I'll read a recap of the first season or something and start season 2 soon-ish.
Have any of you guys seen Voices of a Distant Star? It's an anime short film made by ONE FREAKING MAN (once you watch it you'll see how impressive that is). It's like a love story mixed with a space mech drama, and it is beautiful and moving. I actually cried during the end...but that might be because I connected with the characters so well (they're in a relationship with space and time between them, which is a more extreme version of the distance that separates my girlfriend and I). Here's the first part, there isn't an English version:

Dude, I've seen Digimon The Movie, like, 5 times at least. It was one of my favorite movies growing up. I'm glad they made an even better version that's gotten the attention it deserves.
Also, I hope you enjoy Code Geass R2.
I haven't seen Voices of a Distant Star, but I've heard of it, and I really want to see it. It looks really cool, and I might pick it up along with The Place Promised in Our Early Days and Summer Wars once I have some money.
@Mickeymac I quite enjoyed The Place Promised In Our Early Days, but IIRC the story was rather slow and vague. The story is very emotional and has some cool elements, but I woudn't say it's a favourite of mine.
