Japanese anime (aren't they all?)

Nope, some anime is Korean, often known as Manhwa (think that's what it's called at least). Ya man! Right on brother.

Avatar The Last Airbender has been acknowledged as 'anime' by the A/X group or whatever it's called. And that link I gave you guys for the Wakfu anime. At the 2010 Anime Expo the Japanese animators gave the creators of Wakfu an award and even said they were proud to call it an "anime". And Wakfu is made by a French company. And yes, Thundercats is an anime to.

I watched the first episode of Dream Eater Merry a few days ago. It's kind of like if Inception and Soul Eater had a baby that was 99% Japanese. It was also good. Will probably watch more of the episodes tonight.

Thanks for the recommendations MickeyMac. What animes are available on Netflix or some other legal place to watch?

Fractale, Gintama, Gurren Lagann, One Piece, NANA, Full Metal Alchemist, Super Dimension Fortress Macross, Code Geass, Death Note, Eureka Seven, and Black Butler you can find here: http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/video/anime

Gundam you can find here: http://www.crunchyroll.com/anime/alpha

I double checked, they're both legal. (triple checked in Crunchyroll's case) Also, if you don't like any of those, besure to check the popular section on Crunchyroll, and ANN has reviews.

Oh yes, Code Geass and Death Note are both good.

Yeah, they don't have the licenses for any of those shows, they're just user uploaded videos. It's essentially Piracy. Anime Network does have the license to show To Loveru, along with most of Sentai Filmworks' (who is the North American Distributor) works. Only problem is that The Anime Network is an On Demand network and a subscription Website. Legal things usually aren't free without heavy advertising. I had to learn that the hard way.

Huh... I did not know that... I know a lot of people at my college who use Animefreak.tv so I thought it was legal and all that. I'm guessing the same is on YouTube huh?

@raylax I would buy the DVD... but I have no credit card or any of that shiz, and none of my local DVD stores sell anime. And its far easier to sit on your buttocks at home and watch it via the computer. However, I'll start looking for legal ways now... oh yay... subscribing to crap...

Finished watching Volume 3 of FMA Brotherhood, it's still awesome. Tried to watch GITS: The Laughing Man, it's still boring xD

The new Bleach DVD's coming out at the end of this month. I plan on getting it, but I feel like they got lazy with 'em. Instead of over 24 Episodes in a 5 DVD box set, they only have 12 Episode sets in 3 DVDs; plus they also got rid of the awesome book-style layout and inside-the-box pictures.

I've recently been watching Gaiking and Dancougar. I loved those units from Super Robot Wars, but there shows are almost as awesome. Gaiking I guess is nothing unique, but I felt that it's a well excecuted Super Robot Show from good ol' Go Nagai. Dancougar is a very interesting and compelling Super Robot Show. It's paced differently than most, having them progress slowly towards eventually combining to form a Super Robot rather than do it every single episode. Both shows do a good job of keeping things fress and interesting in there own way, and support troops/the military aren't seen as utterly extraneous, at least at first.

Yeah, though it's getting harder to find non-legal stuff on Youtube these days, in lieu of legal sponsored videos.

And yeah, I don't recommend joining a subscription site, especially when you're at college, and especially when there's ad supported sites like Hulu, Crunchyroll, and ANN to watch stuff on for free...as tempting as Anime Network's exclusives may be...

How much anime do you guys watch? I usually watch about 3 episodes a day during weekdays, and up to 6 or 7 episodes during the weekends.

Wow, that's a huge downgrade. They still charging the same?

@Mickeymac: Hm, let's see... this week I've watched 13 eps of FMA Brotherhood, Nausicaa (finished it this time. Don't dislike it anymore, but it still wasn't that interesting) and The Girl Who Leapt Through Time (for the billionth time). Oh, and the end of Eden of the East. So I guess I watch quite a lot of it xD Although supply has now disappeared until Brotherhood Volume 4 comes out, and my copy of Summer Wars arrives.

Glad you managed to finish Nausicaa, as I said before I found the ending quite interesting, even if I'm somewhat ambivalent towards the rest of the movie.

What did you think of Eden of the East's ending? One of the users here thought the ending was...a bit shaky, I guess was more or less what he said, so I'm curious as to what your take of it was?

I should really watch The Girl Who Leapt Through Time. I have it and it's on my t-do, I just haven't found the time. Maybe I'll get to it in May? I'm also thinking of watching Summer Wars if I ever get around to purchasing it. I heard it's similar to Digimon The Movie, which is a personal favorite of mine.

Eden of the East would've benefitted greatly from stretching the end out over more episodes, a lot of plot points do seem to be explained away in little more than a line and a heck of a lot happens very quickly, but it's still a good end. Definately looking forward to the movies.

And yeah, you really should watch TGWLTT. The explanation of why everything happened near the end is a little eh, but the other 95% of the film is brilliantly charming.

Wow I'm surprised no one has brought up Fairy Tail yet.

Thanks for the feedback. I didn't know about the movies, I take it they aren't compilations?

It's been mentioned in passing but no one's really given it a strong recommendation yet. I might watch it someday, but I'm not really in a hurry since I usually don't care for Action-Adventure Shonen shows like that, and I usually don't watch them without some strong incentive.

An anime that I highly recommend that none of you have probably watched is Last Exile. It starts off slow but after the 4th episode, you're hooked. It's not typical at all - none of the irritating childishness that @Mickeymac was talking about. It's very introspective and emotional. Basically, it's set in a steampunk universe, where there's an immense war being fought between two nations. The war is watched over by the Guild, who mediates the conflict. The story focuses on two kids who work as couriers using a 2-seater airship, and how they get embroiled in the conflict and find out the rotten truths going on behind the scenes. Really great show, with great art direction, plot and atmosphere, if you can get past the slow start.

BTW it was made by Gonzo in celebration of their 10th anniversary. Expect excellent production values!

I'd just like to mention that Last Exile is getting a reboot apparently, and it's sounding very interesting. Also, a popular member of the anime forum I frequent hates this show enough to hate on it at even the slightest provocation. Apparently the ending is very, very confusing.

@Mickeymac The ending of Last Exile makes sense if you take the time to think about it. I talked with my brother about the ending for a while right after we finished watching the show (after a few moments of mouth-agape awe) and we figured it out. It's a surprising twist that seems to come out of nowhere and doesn't make sense at first glance. However it does all tie up both intellectually and emotionally, which is actually more than you can say about a lot of anime with this level of detail.

I believe it's unnecessary to say that enjoyment of a show is subjective. I like to recommend those underappreciated gems when I can. You're aware that anime isn't just blockbuster shounen series like Naruto and Bleach. Last Exile, like a number of other Japanese animated series, aren't intended to be easy viewing and have divided audiences with the risks they take. Their creative, experimental nature is a big part of why I respect the format so much.

It's been a long time since I watched the show so I can't remember the details of many of its episodes. When I can't remember the ending properly I can understand why people would think it's confusing! I do plan on rewatching it sometime. I look forward to the reboot.

@HMack

I too respect anime for its experimental nature. I see we could get along in this matter. I'll have to give The Last Exile a try next week. Oh, and of course I'm looking forward to the reboot as well.

I remember watching the first few episodes of Fairy Tail, last year (I think it's the show anyhow). I enjoyed it; just forgot about it. I will have to watch it when I finish Darker Than Black.
