I am very skilled at Mario games, and while I did not have much trouble with this game, I still believe that's it's second only to Lost Levels in terms of difficulty.
Either this is a good joke with poor delivery, or you are thinking of the Wii game, because there is no way you think the DS Mario is remotely as hard as Lost Levels. It is easily the easiest Mario game. It makes World look difficult. The hardest level of NSMBDS is easier than level one of Lost Levels, not exaggerating one bit.

I'm surprised that so many people are saying it's too easy. One of its best qualities, I thought, was how challenging it was. My only complaint is the the fact that you can't take Yoshi with you after you beat a level with him (and the soundtrack is a little weak).

Read the title. This is for NSMB, not NSMBW.
Jesus is the only way.

Oh my goodness. It not only says DS in the title but it's on the DS board and more than one user has already been corrected in the not so long thread already. How odd.

Well you can't see the "DS" part of the title from the main NintendoLife homepage, which is where I clicked on this thread. I just assumed it was the Wii version because it's newer.
It's a fun little game and the multiplayer games are good fun. It's a good entry-level Mario game, and you can adjust the difficulty yourself by not using any of the power-ups, playing as long as you can as mini-Mario, etc. It was really my first side-scrolling Mario experience, and I did find parts of it quite challenging the first time through.
Moco Loco If you find yourself spiritually drifting (as I was for far too many years), remember that Jesus can and will walk across the water to reach you and bring you back to shore.
Loved this when it was released due to my Mario fanboy-ness, but I tried playing recently it AFTER playing the Wii game, and it is just so overly forgiving, dull and limited in comparison.
The only bad thing is that it's way too easy. With an increased difficulty level it would have been the best 2-D Mario ever. TBut we have NSMBW now, which is, in my opinion, the best 2-D Mario ever.

I haven't played this one past a stage or two, but how are the physics terrible?
Sean Aaron ~ "The secret is out: I'm really an American cat-girl." Q: How many physicists does it take to change a light bulb? A: Two, one to hold the light bulb, the other to rotate the universe.
Well, I still love this game. I thought it was a blast to play, and the levels were great. Sure it was easy and the levels were shorter. It was still a great romp from beginning to end. Not to mention the devious secrets in all the levels.
But I don't see why people are comparing it to Mario World (not here, but elsewhere). That was a console game. This is a handheld game. They made this with that in mind. That's why the levels are shorter, and it's easier, it makes it more suitable for a handheld game. If you need to compare this to something, compare it to Mario Land 2. That one was easy, and had shorter levels as well. So if I'm comparing those two, I would definitely pick NSMB over ML 2.
It's 2D, non-sport related Mario. It's an original, portable Mario game. Level's are unique and fun.
Cons:
It doesn't force you to play through the 8 worlds w/out cannons, which makes the game shorter IMO. The mini mushroom and the mega mushroom were just there to use for secrets/extra lives instead of changing your strategy of how you play the game. You have to fight the same mini-boss every half-way through the worlds.

pros: minigames, classic mario gameplay, portable, enhanced graphics, etc cons: music is mediocre, level design is sub-par, have to unlock worlds 4+7 through unclear means, etc
