I think the narrow sweet spot is probably the biggest issue. It makes the system seem "fussy" if you're not used to it.
That said, I like the depth and usually leave it on, unless I'm playing in a very relaxed position.
The problem is that there is no feasible way to eliminate this, not without expensive hardware to adapt for individual faces, pupil distances, and facial tracking software would have to be included in every game that uses it, which would also drain the CPU/GPU. What I am hoping for is a method in which they can employ both on the same handheld, with or without glasses. Using glasses would eliminate the need for a "sweet spot," but have the drawback of needing glasses to play it.

I tend to play games in 2d and flid on 3d for cut scenes. 3d movies are pretty neat too. Although, my elbow and arm hurt from having to hold the unit in the "sweet" spot for so long .......
The reason to hate 3D went away when the 3DS became available at a price that was similar to the DSi's imo.
Personally i like it as an added extra and wouldn't mind seeing more home console games offering it as well.
I hope that technology is given more time and one day will be as comfy as watching or playing in 2D.

Well, the technology is still fairly young. I suspect the viewing arc could probably be optimized by changing pixel angles and using a screen that isn't flat. I suspect a concave viewing screen might be beneficial. There's also probably ways to make the 3D drop off less binary. Or maybe someone will come up with something immensely clever. Just a few degrees would help.
Edit: After giving the matter further thought, a convex lens seems to be the better option. A more creative option might be to place a lens on top of the screen to bend the player's vision.

That would still just change the "sweet spot" and not eliminate it. Except the convex idea, which would actually make it not work. The method used for the 3DS is actually utilizing a flaw that LCD had for a long time, the flaw was overcome using the modern displays, but Nintendo figured out a way to use that flaw. You can only see raw LCD at specific angles, the angles for each eye are set so only one eye will see the information for that eye. Making it convex would cause the other eye to see information not intended for it.

Yes, changing the sweet spot is the intention, as eliminating it is impossible with how the screen works. As for the convex screen, it would require tuning, but so does the normal flat screen. Nothing about what you said makes it impossible to compensate for the change and perhaps see benefit.
Ahh... i was choosing between ridge racer and the asphalt game. I have never tried asphalt compared to ridge racer (tried on ps3). I know ridge racer is a great game series..
One of the reviews said that while ridge racer allows for smoother gameplay, asphalt is supposed to have oncoming traffic and ability to evade police or crash other cars. So i figured id try something different. I am not that much into racing games anyway but at $10 on amazon i couldnt really say no.
And on topic: i do agree with a lot of you. really loving the 3d in the 3DS.
For me it actually depends on the game. There are games that I ABSOLUTELY loved playing with the 3D on, and there are also games that I absolutely don't give a damn about the 3D.
Games like Pokemon X/Y, Project X Zone and Fire emblem awakening just have to played in 3D.

I don't like the 3D efffect because I can't keep the 3DS in the same position while gaming....... I"m a bit dissapointed youtube on 3DS doesn't have 3D support since although I don't like the 3D for gaming I would have liekd it fo videos

I concur with the YouTube thing, it would have been relatively easy for them to implement, but they didn't even implement the chromatic 3D for YouTube vids in the app.

See, I play everything in 3D, and the use of 3D in Pokemon X and Y made the gsme so laggy that I just left it off all the time.
Currently Playing: Metroid Prime 4: Beyond (NS2); Corpse Factory (PC)

Not to mention most of the world map has no stereoscopic effect either. Ironically ... it still had aliasing problems that many 3D titles have too.

Really? I didn't really feel the lag to be completely honest. But I do agree it is weird that only evolution scenes and 1v1 battles have 3D..... But still, the battles in 3D is freaking awesome.

I love 3D. I play absolutely everything I can in 3D. I wish Wii U had 3D, as well. Unfortunately, TV manufacturers charged too much for 3D TVs, to begin with(IMO), and they can't get consumers to want something that's not as supported as a "regular" fornat.
If 3D content and displays are a gimmick, then so is all of technology. It is factually a step forward for technology.
I do wish Youtube and Netflix were in 3D, but that is perhaps for another time... When I play my 3DS(which is admittedly less than my Wii U, by far), I play it with full 3D and max brightness. For the record, I have played PS3 and Xbox 360 in 3D. It wouldn't be considered a gimmick, if it was as commonly supported as a regular DVD, meaning no one really has to go out of their way for the 3D option.
EDIT: I partially retract my gimmick comment. Gimmick can mean a variety of things, and I would only cite the positive definitions of the word as being relevant to 3D displays and content. HD is just as much of a gimmick, so...

HD was just a fad. Though everyone kept saying it was the bestest new thing evah ... but now no one seems to notice that it's gone. lol

I started playing Ocarina of Time 3D and find myself turning off the 3D a lot! It really has a narrow viewing angle for this game. I left it on a lot for A link Between Worlds, and really like it for Mutant Mudds. But leave it off for Mario Kart 7. When it's good, it's great, but some games just don't work well with it.
I don't know if it is just my eyes but the image quality seems to "improve" when the 3D is turned on. The images are sharper and the colour are more vibrant.....or do I need to pay a visit to my optometrist?
