I am new to these forums, so first of all I would like to say hi to everyone. Quick intro: I have only owned the NES as far as nintendo consoles go (my brother also had a gameboy and a GBA). I got a 3ds a few months ago (Zelda XL version), and so far got castlevania MOF, Donkey kong country returns 3d, Luigi dark moon, and new super mario bros 2. Just ordered the following games as well: shinobi, asphalt 3d, metal gear solid snake eater, sonic generations, and resident evil relevations. I am a pretty hardcore PC gamer too... I wanted to play the 3ds for a while before i made my first post here so as to give a more balanced opinion on the system...
On topic: I was just a little bit curious why so many people consider the 3D in the 3DS a gimmick. I was absolutely blown away by the glasses-free 3D on this handheld... the 3D effect, while does not change the gameplay, does provide more immersion and make the game look and feel more alive. It is the same concept as a graphics upgrade, which makes a game feel more immersive, but dont necessarily change the gameplay. I would not consider 3D a gimmick for that reason; for me its an extension to improve player immersion, so while it is not a "game changer" it is very nice to have.
This handheld has made me seriously look forward to the upcoming occulus Rift and everything that 3d tech can offer us down the line.
I can understand that some people may not enjoy the 3D effect, it may strain their eyes, or may even just prefer 2D... but I still do not think that this qualifies 3D for a gimmick category.
What do you think? is 3D a gimmick as far as you are concerned? why or why not? How do you personally define a gimmick?
Average people or Nintendo (or Sony) haters would say it is gimmick in my area far from I know. Ironically those average people rather watch 3D movies at the movie theatre than 2D movies. As for Sony fanboys (or fangirls) explains to me that they rather get an Vita than 3DS because they don't want an 3D but they want an 3D TV for their PS3. I could say the same for Nintendo fanboys (or fangirls) that they don't want an 3D TV but they want an 3DS for 3D gaming.
I think people are just a bit silly in my area. I don't think 3D should be an major selling point and its should be an minor selling point. I have an 3D TV and I barely watch movies in 3D. I have an 3D games on my PS3 and I barely play them in 3D. I play 3DS a lot and I admit it but sometime I forget that I have an 3D on or off. Sometime I get annoyed by 3D being on for some games especially that required motion movements.
Because even ignoring how much of a disappointment it is to go from Nintendo's deserved victories for expanding gaming's audience with genuinely new ways to play to a kinda cool graphical gimmick that's usually not worth my time, most people don't even use it that well. Super Mario 3D Land embarrasses most attempts at 3D in the same way that most 3D movies look lame compared to Dredd.
A gimmick is "a trick or device intended to attract attention, publicity, or business".
3D is a gimmick, since it is used as one of the things that separates the 3DS from the competition. It doesn't matter whether you like it or not. Gimmicks aren't inherently bad, either. Pretty much every world in Mario Galaxy 1 and especially 2 had a gimmick that helped separate that world from the other worlds, giving them special attention in the eyes of the player. Those two games are among the most critically acclaimed of all video games, period.

It's 2014, and people are still arguing about the same thing.
What is there to say that haven't been said already, or have people run out of things to argue about.
For you, the day LordJumpMad graced your threads, was the most important day of your life. But for me, it was Tuesday. [url=http://www.backloggery.com/jumpmad]Unive...
Nobody hates it, it's just that it's mostly unnecessary.
There's also the little fact that the 3DS has a lot of power, but half of that power is used for the 3D so it can kind of feel like the 3D holds it back at times.
I think you mean "fad" instead of "gimmick." Nintendo is purely gimmick, they innovate new things into the gaming arena to attract fans, and most of us fans love that part. I love the idea of stereoscopic images, though I will admit I have been dragging my feet to see a movie in stereoscopic because I didn't know what to expect. Now I do, thanks to the 3DS having it as an option. What I say to real 3D: Bring it on, I am loving it.
Though @Super_Gravy made a lot of good points, the fact is that fans of something will almost always say the others suck, and nitpick it unjustly. Stereoscopic technology is still relatively new, though it's taking longer to catch on that LCD monitors or the return of SSD storage. Glasses free is what Nintendo did, and they did it well, so I'd wager it's here to stay.
Friend list is full, I will be clearing room for Bravely Default soon though. Colors! 3D Gallery, My Blog

I love 3D but it doesn't love me and loses the focus point too easily
goodbyes are a sad part of life but for every end there's a new beggining so one must never stop looking forward to the next dawn

i love the 3D feature. like OP said it doesnt really add anything to the gameplay but games just look way better. currently playing donkey kong country returns 3D and the game is 10times more beautiful with the 3D on max. i also love the 3D-camera angle in PES2012 when you play become-a-legend mode. you really feel like you are on the pitch in a big football stadium. so cool
I love the 3D, it's my favorite thing about the console. I play with the 3D up all the way, all the time. There are so many games where the 3D adds so much to the experience.

Personally, I cannot turn the 3D on because it makes me physically sick. This is the same for 3D movies. It strains my eyes and makes it difficult to focus and concentrate on the game I'm playing. After a while, I just feel nauseous. If you like it, keep the 3D on and enjoy! I suppose I wish I could. For me though, I don't feel like I'm missing anything. I'm quite happy in my simple two dimensional viewing world. =)

If anything, i find that the stereoscopic 3D demands more concentration, it can even become distracting because if you're a little OCD like i am you might find yourself switching from 2D to 3D while playing here and there just to see the difference. and then there's the sweet spot! eek!
Wavey you haven't even mentioned the 'mystery pixel' which is located along the gulf between the two and three-dimensional worlds!!
Stare closely enough at this pixel as it flits in and out of dimensional space - you're bound to get a double headache with a side of fried brains.
I personally dislike the 3D on the 3DS because you have to hold it in 1 position and if you don't there lines going across your screen.
With my personal experience with it, all it did was make me see double rather than actually make me feel like it was 3D. Maybe in the future they could improve on it but for right now, I'd rather play my games in traditional 2D
I think I must be unusual - at least among English-speakers (who are an odd lot in my experience). I LOOOOOVE 3D.
I absolutely adore it. It turns my 3DS into a magic box - a whole world of depth and wonder. It brings back the magic of my first experiences with light-games.
Pokemon X/Y actually doesn't use 3D for much of the game, only for battles and dungeons - so if one is worried about loss of power there are ways around it. But gosh the pokemon-darlings look so splendid in 3D!
I realize a minority of people have a genuine problem with seeing it, and I acknowledge the sweet-spot problem. But if you can see it I believe it is well worth persevering. It is the most magical experience!

I can see the 3D rather easily. And the sweet spot you have to hold it in is the distance most people tend to hold a handheld from. Perhaps there is something about your vision that prevents you from experiencing the 3D effect?
