Apparently Lurantis is one of the Totem Pokemon. I'm gonna take a guess here and say that there's TWO Island Challenges per island, which replaces the gyms. We haven't seen a Normal type Trial Captain for Gumshoos, so there's more to come I imagine.
So perhaps you beat the two Island Challenges and then face the Kahuna of the island, which is like an Elite Four member?

I was wondering something similar, but I suppose we won't truly find out until the games are released, or else Game Freak decides to be more specific before then.
Man do I love speculating, but the wait for the games is starting to kill me. >< I still don't know which version I want.
@IceClimbers I'm not sure what leak you're referencing. Is it not still possible that Ash-Greninja is a special anime-only, Ash-only case or am I wrong? Please, please no Synchro....
Anyways, my unfounded theories aside, I like these new designs.
I love Alola Exeggutor... It's just so ridiculous, as if Exeggutor couldn't get any more silly. I love it's goofy tail head too. And it's Dragon... What a hilarious creature.
The new Ice designs for Ninetales/Sandslash are pretty neat. I like Ice types and they dont get enough love. However, I am mildly disappointed that they didn't create new Pokemon altogether as it doesn't make much sense to retype these two to ice in Alola... I hate saying this but it makes me wonder if they really are 'running out of ideas'.
However, Lurantis is pretty cool, though I think the stripes are tacky. Minior is also cute and I hope it evolves into something cool.
@FriedSquid I think they have many ideas, but just as with any new feature in a series after many entries, people tend to think those new features somehow mean they are running out of ideas, even if they actually expand possibilities. Some people will love them , others won't, but it's difficult to tell without experimenting and still keep the elements that people love at the same time. When a series changes too much, fans divide just as with Metal Gear or Resident Evil (I actually like the new entries, they weren't less scary, it's just that I'm not 8 years anymore like with the first ones but that's my unpopular opinion) so it isn't about not having ideas but about how well people recieve them. Personally, while I'm not fond of the new designs, I think this game will feel quite new and unique.
Is it basically the mon that holds a Z-stone can use a burst move once per game? (Basically mega evolve, but instead of mega, a strong sudden move).
I swear if we have to choose between using a mega, or a z-move, and can't have both on the same team, its clear which one nobody would use (nice water type Z-move on that storm drain cradily.).
I guess its a good mechanic for nonmega teams but idk if I'd pref a Z-stone on anything over another item like lefties, focus sash, or anything really. The only mon I could see myself using a Z-stone on is venomoth since it can setup with sub+sleep power+bug buzz and sweep a team with tinted lens bug buzz/Z-move when something tanky comes out, basically kill before getting killed.

Also, different Gens add evolutions, I think it was just a matter of time until we saw different versions of pokemon in different areas. I wonder how you will get the "regular" versions of these guys while playing Sun & Moon. I am starting to agree with people that say Kalos will be revisited and that will be our version of a Pokemon Z game.
