I'm transferring my files to a micro SD card so I'll be ready for the transfer when it comes in.

...So wait. To transfer everything from my XL to the N3DS I don't have to go into system settings to transfer? I can just copy and paste everything to the MicroSD from my computer...?

I think he just meant to make the transfer easier, you still have to do the thing via the settings. But he won't have to redownload everything.

No. What I'm doing is switching out my current SD card for the one that will be used in my New 3DS. That way, when the system comes in, I could seamlessly transfer my licenses from my old 3DS to my New 3DS without having to take the time to transfer my content using my computer, or having to redownload everything. You still have to go into your settings and actually do the transfer.

I'm just doing this in advance so I know everything will work and it'll save me some time.

Sorry for being kind of dense but I'm not understanding. Other than pictures, what can you store in a computer to make the system transfer easier? The actual games? How is that done?

@Brewsky Ohh! So you have the microSD card in a larger SD sized shell then, which you transferred everything to, so you can transfer it at launch?

So the microSD is currently in your regular 3DS?

Brewsky can explain it better than me, but I'll be doing the same thing...all my stuff on the SD card will be saved on the computer, and I'll do the system transfer to transfer the other small stuff (game "licenses", NNID, and all that). Once that's done I'll just put the SD card data back onto the card so I don't have to re-download all of my games.

Yep! That way I can transfer between the systems and then just pop in the new card into my New 3DS, and then I'm good to go.

I'm trying so hard to understand this so I can do it myself, you see. I have a 32 GB MicroSD still in its package waiting for launch.

So! If I want to do what you're doing, right now I have to just directly copy and paste everything to the microSD, then pop it in my regular XL for now.

Then at launch, I copy and paste THE ENTIRE SD CARD to my computer, put it back in the regular 3DS empty of all but the licenses, perform the transfer, pop the microSD into the New XL at the end of the transfer, then when it's all over I can paste everything from my computer back to the microSD?

Do I have a full understanding of this now?

You can copy and paste even before the transfer

You are overcomplicating it. All you need to do it take your old SD card and copy all the files to your computer. Then, take your new SD card and copy the files to it. Put the new SD card into your 3DS and then you'll be ready to transfer. Watch this video to help you understand, and pretend that the 3DS XL they talk about is the New 3DS.

The system transfer is simply for eShop purchases and your NNID. (...and friend code) So all you need to do is save all of your stuff from the SD card onto the PC until the transfer is done. Then copy and paste everything back to the SD card you're going to use for the new system, otherwise you'll have to download all of your games again. (not to mention your saves will be lost)

Or you can prematurely change SD cards like I did, and just go through with the transfer normally without having to use a computer. All you need to do is transfer from one 3DS to another, and then take the SD card from your old 3DS and put it into your new system. Easy as that.
