Just so we're clear: Generations is the localized version of Monster Hunter X (Cross), right? Not Monster Hunter Stories?
Just checking, since I'd hate to think I got myself all excited over a lame spin-off that backpedals on everything that made the series appealing in the first place.
@Tsurii Freedom Unite/Portable 2nd G was the 4 Ultimate/ 4G of the second generation. We already had our G version; the better comparison would be Portable 3rd, and even than that's stretching things a bit.
Capcom JP reps during X's pre-release made comparisions to Street Fighter 0/Street Fighter Alpha; make of that what you will.

@CanisWolfred Generations is Cross.
I'll disagree with you about Stories tho. Everything about that screams spin-off done right imo (and it's pretty as all hell)
It's a story-oriented Turn-Based JRPG with cutsy characters and monster designs. While I'll admit that I didn't pay much attention to the progression of the game (is it a globe-trotting adventure, or hub based?), everything else is already the literal antithesis to Monster Hunter standard, and many fans, myself included, play Monster Hunter games specifically to get away from the tropes and mechanics Stories seems to present. I don't care if it does them well, I already have a million other games just like it, and I'll have a million more to choose from by the time it comes out. A lot of them will probably be better games, too, or are at least more likely to meet or exceed expectations. It'd take a lot to convince me that MHS is worth my time, and that'd be most easily accomplished by setting itself apart from the pack.
Except the Monster Hunter series already did that a long ago, carving out a niche that rivals Pokemon and Dynasty Warriors in the process. And much like Pokemon, despite having a myriad of immitators, very few even come close to recapturing everything that made it so appealing in the first place. That's because a lot of it came down to creating a unique identity, with an almost blindered focus on making you feel like a hunter/gatherer in a world full of monsters.
Unfortunately, a wagon doesn't travel very far once those blinders fall off...
Tried out the demo, recorded all three quests...
Gotta mess with Prowler Mode some more, pretty sure I didn't discover all the things I could do there. Still did ok for my first time, though.
Malfestio, even though I didn't die once, he was still a pain...knew this would happen. Would've had an easier time if the Kinsect I had was faster, though...lol
Nargacuga, oddly enough I had the easiest time with, she almost took me down several times. But that was mainly because I was trying the Arial Gunlance style, was pretty cool. Took her down in about 10 minutes, lol.
Anyways I may post the videos here if you guys wanna see later tonight...if I don't, well...my Youtube link is in my sig. owo

Keep it PG-13-ish.

I agree that health bars, turn-based combat, an open world, and cel-shaded graphics are antithetical to Monster Hunter, but Stories isn't Monster Hunter. It's just a Monster Hunter-branded game in the setting. I'm looking forward to Stories (if it ever gets translated) because I really like the setting, and exploring a larger Monster Hunter world seems fun. God knows it'll give me a surer pulse than the next samey pokemon game.
Well I uploaded all 3 videos last night, but...getting absolutely no views on them...go figure. :c
Guess I'll share them here if you wanna see how I did against the new guys. (...and Narga)
I don't think I'll do any other videos until the full game, though...not even sure about going online with it...We'll see.
EDIT: Of course the forums actually posts the video itself, was hoping for just a link. >.>

I guess that was the point I was getting at. Not to say a heavily divergent spin-off has to be a bad thing, but when it's clearly just using the name to garner attention despite lacking anything that would make it appealing as an entry in that franchise, I can't help but be miffed. Especially if it feels like they're toning things down just to "appeal to the children" - read: insulting the audience's intelligence.
For the record, this this is far from the only example I could name...which I won't, because it got really...I forgot the word, but it was all over the place, and when I moved it to a text document, it was over a full page...seriously, what do you call that? I know it's a writing term. That is going to be bugging me all day now...I wouldn't call it a rant, since it wasn't overly emotional, just...unfocused...
Hiryu looks really badass! I wonder if there will be any of that in MH Stories, because it's really cool. I would gladly pay for a Ghouls and Ghosts crossover.
Dual blades are ridiculously fun to use with aerial style.
I never use DB's much, but i tried this out yesterday after reading that and it was very enjoyable. I got alot more mounts with DB aerial than any other weapon so far. Felt smoother with DB's but maybe I'm just starting to get used to the flow of aerial.
