Thanks @VanillaLake I will make do with the Wii VC, I can't get my head round using a Stylus to play SM64. Would need to try before buy with that me thinks

You're welcome. You are supposed to use your thumb on the touch screen that simulates the analogue stick controls... Another reason why I like the Wii VC version is that is much better than the original N64 PAL version that Europe received. Most of all, the aspect ratio has been corrected. Because of that, the higher resolution and the compatibility with the Wii classic, Wii classic pro and GameCube controllers, Super Mario 64 (Wii VC version) is the best version of Super Mario 64.
I would say to get Super Mario 3D Land over New Super Mario Bros. 2. There is just more depth to Super Mario 3D Land, literally and figuratively.
As for non-platformer games, Mario Kart 7 and Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon are must-buys. Paper Mario: Sticker Star is enjoyable, but it is really simple and inconsequential in a lot of ways. I would wait until Sticker Star is $20, it is not worth $40 to me.

No. If you play Super Mario 64 DS you have to use the touch screen for analogue control, not as good as playing the Wii Virtual Console version with a classic or GameCube controller.
That's not true at all. The analogue stick works just fine. I played it the other day. Here we go. Evidence beats opinion every time:

That you can use the circle pad is not the same as it having analog control. Mario 64 was designed to be played without a run button.

Freedom of the press is for those who happen to own one.

Well I took the questioner to just be asking whether the analog stick worked to control it, rather than whether it worked identically to the original.
The 3DS version is still analog in a sense though. Analog in terms of angle, if not in terms of strength.

Oh yeah, it works, but ONLY as a digital control equivalent, so you can not control Mario speed, and you really need to do that if you want to play the game properly.
What I said is still accurate, what you said is that you can use the stick analogue in Super Mario 64 but you did not explain that it didn't work as an analogue control, and that is ambiguous.

But was the DS d-pad purely digital? Or was there a pressure sensitivity to it? Cos if it was purely digital, that would surely mean the 3DS stick would emulate just 8 directions of movement. I don't have my 3DS, as I'm waiting for the New one, but I remember it being more sensitive to direction than that. But I could be mistaken.

You are mistaken. If you play Super Mario 64 and use your thumb or the Nintendo DS plastic thumb on the touch screen, the controls are purely analogue, the problem is that it just doesn't feel as right as controlling a real analogue button. I didn't mention the D-pad because I assume everybody knows it's digital only on every DS and 3DS system.

You didn't answer my question. Are you saying that the analog stick truncates the movement into 8 directions? That's what my inference was. I wasn't disputing the touch screen part.

The Nintendo 3DS analogue stick truncates any Nintendo DS game controls to the same digital input that can be possible using the D-pad. 8 directions at one speed only. You could use more kindness, in between.

Sorry, I didn't realise I wasn't. That's just how I talk!
You're absolutely right though, the wiki page confirms it. All I can say is that I didn't notice that at all when I played the DS version. The need for a run button is noticeably annoying though.

Okay, no worries. I'm glad this ended up just fine. Anyway, I believe the best Super Mario 64 version is the Wii VC version, the aspect ratio is definitely better than the N64 PAL version and I think the graphics look a bit better, too. Add the analogue controls with classic, classic pro and GameCube controllers being compatible with it and voilà.
I really don't like the navigation bar of Nintendo Life continuously reappearing while browsing!!

To be honest, I think I prefer the DS version just because he actually looks like the modern mario. That 64 mario was damn ugly!

Super Mario 64 was the first 3D platformer, if I am not wrong. It features awesome and clear graphics and has aged much better than many other 3D games. I still play the Wii version sometimes. I don't find that Mario ugly, just a bit simple, but that's fine.

Well, it was the first good 3D platformer. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alpha_Waves
(if you're talking about europe/north america, I think crash bandicoot probably counts as being before mario 64 as well. Although I'd call that a 2.9D platformer)

Yeah, I mean real 3D platformers but I said that I wasn't sure. Crash Bandicoot, I played that on PS a little bit and it's not totally 3D but there is only one narrow path to go. Alpha Waves, what is that? LOL Is that a proper 3D platformer?
