You have my sympathy as I spent my first month fishing in Wild World with no success until my brother came to stay and showed me how. I'm in the UK and we haven't got New Leaf yet, but I assume the method is similar, and that you press a button at the moment you want to hook the fish. It's easier at first if you have earphones on so that you can hear the water sounds, but I always play with earphones on anyway.
So, you need to fish actively. By that I mean you keep casting your rod a little ahead of the fish's shadow in the water until he sees the float and heads towards it. If you are river fishing it's sometimes easier to cast a little upstream of the fish as the float will be drawn down to him on the current, and he may even see it out of the corner of his eye as it drifts past.
Once the fish is heading in the direction of your float hold your button lightly and wait and listen. At the moment the fish takes the bait you will hear a soft plop and maybe even see the float go down a little. Hit the button at that moment and hold it down until your avatar has landed the fish.
It may take a few goes to get used to doing this at the right moment, but it's a bit like riding a bicycle and once you've done it a couple of times you'll be fine.
Fishing is the most fun way of making an honest Bell in Animal Crossing whatever the season IMHO. Good luck and enjoy it!

I visited Astrid and she asked me what I thought about the reggae top she was wearing... But Astrid was wearing a custom shirt made by me! She did have a reggae top as furniture in her house though lol.

Also, has anyone found any gyroid whle digging? I really like these but all I find now are fossils. I'm starting to fear they removed them from the game.
