Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3: The Black Order has barely touched store shelves, but we've already got our first leaked list of characters – and it goes without saying that if you want to avoid spoilers, you should navigate away from this page as quickly as possible. In fact, why did you even click the link?
Dataminer Demonslayerx8 has been digging around in the game's code and has discovered that it has a whopping 49 DLC character slots, in addition to 40 playable characters, 15 NPC characters, 30 bosses, and 80 'background' characters. Phew.
The datamine also reveals that there are 4 outstanding playable characters that have yet to be revealed; these are not DLC characters (we already know a bit about those) and may be added as part of a future update.
They are:
- Black Bolt
- Medusa
- Vision
- Valkyrie
Are you looking forward to playing with these four characters? Let us know in the comments.

I don't think anyone expected free characters to be added to the game alongside the paid DLC ones, but that's really cool and maybe will be enough to appease some disgruntled fans.
Vision and Valkyrie? Interesting choices, I like it!
There are more than 40 confirmed playable characters at launch - I think it was 44 and then they announced 3 more plus these 4... so the datamine numbers don’t add up...
I’m a huge Medusa fan! So I’m all for it!
I hope they’ll add bosses and npc’s as free characters like beast, loki, juggernaut etc.
Also I wonder if it will be classic blond valkyrie or mcu valkyrie. I’m okay with both although the best would be if both will be skins. I don’t know much about comic book valkyrie besides her defenders appearances. I really like how tessa thompson portrayed her.
Valkyrie?!?! YAAAAS!!!!!
Vision & Valkyrie are cool but I was never a fan of Inhumans and the failed push Marvel made of them to replace the X-Men has put me off altogether now. I'm still hoping for Quentin Quire.
@darkswabber one of those npcs is an unlockable secret already
Wow still no ant-man wtf y?
I personally hope it's an MCU inspired Valkyrie, like Nebula in this game. But whatever we get I'll be happy.
Playing this right now. It’s just like the first two and definitely an old school arcade beat em up. Reminds me of playing Turtles and it’s all good. Not going to win GOTY awards but story and voice acting good and what would be expect and mindless action... looking forward to seeing what you can unlock only been playing an hour or so and have unlock 16 heroes.
Vision is in, yes! The lack of Ant-Man, Beast, or Jess Jones being upgraded from NPC is disappointing, but still. Surprised that Black Bolt and Medusa are being upgraded, but I'll give them props for actually giving the Inhumans some love for once.
@jump Completely in the same boat, here. Both in regards to how I feel about Inhumans after the whole IvX debacle, AND the dire need to have more Quintin Quire in just about anything you can put him in.
No Viz in the base game is a bit sad but if he’s being added, that’s great. I would love to see a Jonas skin of him from the original Young Avengers run.
this is going to be a great budget title to buy later on
Oh, wow! I've been following DSX8 since my Brawl modding days! Miss those days. Had a lot more free time to help make skins. Good times...
Super excited about this game, I'll be picking it up after work.
They gave me my Moon Knight in the Marvel Knights DLC, so anyone else they add is just icing on the cake.
If one of those 49 DLC characters are Squirrel Girl, I will buy this game and all the DLC when at least the base game is on sale. You can quote me on that.
It won't happen, but you can quote me on that.
Surprised Vision isn't in the base game considering the Mind Stone
Awesome! I was hoping Medusa would make the list after Crystal was announced. Plus Moon Knight and Ghost Rider are back. Just waiting to see if Rogue, Gambit, or Jubilee are added too.
Buy Diablo 3, it's better. MUA3 is a joke in graphics and performance, what made it worse is that it's a Switch exclusive game. Diablo 3 runs at 60fps and looks so much better: and it's a port!
NL criticised Assassin's Creed 3 and Saint's Row 3 for their performance, what about this game? It's an 'Made for Switch' game and it has subpar performance and looks bland.
Is NL too ashamed to post this:
Dear Nintendo Life -
I'm not actually interested in this game (I mean, I'm not disinterested in it, but I already have approximately several billion games I've purchased that I need to finish so whatever), but what I AM interested is that you didn't spoil what dataminers found in the title (or sub-title) of this article. I hope you keep doing that.
Sincerely,
Jerkface Asbestos
P.S. Love you! <3 <3 <3
@Stocksy Nope. The game ships with 34 known characters. There are (I think) a few unlockable characters in the game that we weren't advertised or shown in anything as "playable". But. Let's for the sake of this say. There's one for certain. They're adding 3 more with the Cyclops, Colossus, and Loki update in August and the 4 pack in the "fall". Which is likely October. That's 8 more to the roster.
So. Let's say there are. 4 heroes each in the next two DLC packs. That gives us 8 more playable heroes via expansion pass. So. That's already 15 new characters. (Not counting the known secret character already in the game.) Totaling out to 49 right now.
All of that math is irrelevant though. You can look at the tweet and clearly see that there are 50 DLC slots. As well as a Playable character list tweeted July 18th. Which has mild roster spoilers. It shows Loki, Vision, "Bolt", Medusa, and Valkyrie. So. Loki was confirmed a day before he was announced at SDCC. Soooooooooooo. To edit my math. If Vision, Blackbolt, Medusa, and Valkyrie are sneakily planned to be added. That's 19 DLC slots used. 53 characters total in the roster.
@nintendolie You do realize that the criticisms of the AC3 and SR3 ports are valid because both of those games are just as old as Diablo 3, right? Saint's Row 3 actually releasing a year before both AC and Diablo 3. There is no excuse for them to be performing as poorly as they are.
The reason why Diablo 3 is smooth sailing is because it's a port of a game that had already been ported 3 times. It SHOULD perform during it's FOURTH rerelease.
Another good example of this as much as I hate to say it is Skyrim. Targets 30fps and hits it near flawlessly. The game is also several years old with too many rereleases, but enough for them to know how to make it RUN.
@Lycanvenom You have no idea what you are saying. AC3 and SR3 are both open world 3rd person game. Diablo 3 and MUA3 are both top down games, common in mobile games.
Games like MUA3 should be able to run in 60 fps especially being tailored for Switch exclusively. Just as Digital Foundry said, Diablo 3 is impressive for being a port (and it looks better).
@nintendolie Literally doesn't matter if they're open world 3rd person games. Both of them performed like garbage and were games that originally released around the same time as Diablo 3. Diablo 3 was also confirmed by DF to be running a previous gen version with small tweaks from the "next gen" ports. Which was expected and why AC3 and SR3 failed. They were downgraded direct ports of rereleased games intended to resemble the newer versions that were parred down for Switch instead of tweaked versions of classic ports.
For specifics. Diablo 3 is running at a lower dynamic resolution than MUA3 while docked to ensure that it hits 60fps which ends up making the game look ridiculously blurry in comparison to not just MUA, but other versions of Diablo. Runs at 900p and can dip as low a 756p docked. Handheld running 720p dropping to 540p. But. they also tell you that the drops that MUA3 has are similar and aren't bad at all albeit noticeable. There are significantly less effects on screen in Diablo 3 and the models in MUA3 are also in a significantly higher poly count. Making it taxing on the GPU.
Also. this being a console exclusive made by a third party developer means literally nothing for Nintendo or the system. Nor does it mean that they should arbitrarily target a frame rate that doesn't matter. I'd rather have a visually pleasing experience at the cost of a halved frame rate than garbage that I could play on my phone. If I wanted to play Marvel Future Fight. I'd play that on my phone. If I'm looking for something in 1440p or 4K. I'll just jump on my PC. I don't think this game needs 60fps. What it needs is a stable 30 and they can achieve that through a patch.
If it's not a game made by Nintendo EPD. I'm not thinking too hard about frames. MK8D, Odyssey, and Smash run 60fps flawlessly. Zelda is the only 30fps Nintendo EPD exclusive that I own. Pokemon is third party, targets 30fps and (for whatever reason) unlocks it's frame rate on the pause screen showing it can go higher. Warframe is multiplat, targets 60, doesn't hit it often. It's all moot. But. To claim it NEEDS to hit 60fps is ridiculous.
@Lycanvenom "Zelda is the only 30fps Nintendo EPD exclusive that I own." Why? It's an open world game. Not even Nintendo can break that 30fps curse.
