SNK is making a new version of its legendary Neo Geo system, it has been revealed.
The announcement came from SNK Corporation chairman Ge Zhihui, who also revealed that a new Metal Slug title is in development for the new console, as well as other systems. The news came during an investor relations press conference in Seoul.
While it's not known exactly what form the new Neo Geo system will take – or why we're getting two versions, numbered '2 and 3' – Zhihui revealed that higher-than-expected sales of the Neo Geo Mini had convinced the company to create more hardware. However, he was quick to add that these new consoles are unrelated to the Neo Geo Mini, a stand-alone mini arcade cabinet pre-loaded with games that plugs into your TV via HDMI.
The new Metal Slug game, on the other hand, isn't related to the upcoming mobile title, currently in development at Tencent. The last mainline instalment in the series was Metal Slug 7, which launched on the DS in 2008 and was later updated for the PSP in the form of Metal Slug XX.
Zhihui also confirmed during the Q&A session that SNK Heroines: Tag Team Frenzy has sold 300,000 copies since launch.

Even more old retro game consoles? That section of the market is now so flooded with these things that I doubt it'll be a success.
I can finally afford it!!!
Maybe the second model will add a CD drive, preferably (or probably) a lot faster than the original one in the Neo Geo CD, and compatible with the original Neo Geo CD games, which are still reasonably priced, especially in comparison to cartridges.
@NintendoFan4Lyf My thoughts exactly. Both it and the games themselves better be a heck of a lot cheaper than their predecessors.
Ya had me at new Metal Slug.
yes we need a shiny new metal slug!
That's surprising. That, and the fact that Neo Geo Mini sold "better than expected", which means it sold reasonably well (first surprise) and that even them didn't expect that.
We'll see, but it will never replicate the feeling of having the original. Which I have, acquired 10 years ago, but with 2 games only because of their insane prices.
@Sculptor I doubt you have a clue what you're talking about.
@titotito3399 How do you know?
@YANDMAN because I'm an adult with a job now. Last time my Dad said "hell no", now I pay his bills and get to tell him "hell no" hehe. The circle of life...
So we got Atari returning to make hardware, then Intellivision and now SNK coming back to make hardware, so all that's left is Sega.
This is really cool. Don’t know if I’ll get one or not (price is reasonable but prohibitive) but I do love the idea.
Interesting but I feel like they really missed the opportunity for something like this to really matter. I mean it's cool for collectors and I might just buy one for the novelty but I got all the ACA NeoGeo games installed on my Switch and a nice Hori arcade stick so I feel like I am pretty well set when it comes to the games.
I sold my neo Geo and collection to stump up my deposit for my mortgage
I've resented my house ever since
@titotito3399 Yeah but we don't know how much it is, so how do you know you can afford it?
@Nessmissesmum I bought much of my Neo collection from someone who had actually blown a lot of his remortgaged hosue value on games.
@JayJ Wait a minute, they are talkign about a new home console from how i am reading this of which nothing has been released. How have they missed the point with a completely unanounced system?? I think you've missed the point.
@retro_player_22 Sega's it out in September.
Wicked. Best news ever. Totally left field news. X). ill probly get one as long as it has exclusives and the games are unique looking and fun like the neogeo games back in the day. Or hell even exclusive new fighting games would be cool with entirely new rosters and or shock troopers 3. Bring back complete cames on carts and ditch constant patches / partially completed released games and youll have my money.
Doubt the new Metal Slug would play or look as good as past Metal Slugs, lets see.
Hopefully they won't ruin it with a lot of fighting games like the last time.
Just remake the very original model and the very original controller but maybe make them both a little bit smaller--sorted. But you can also have the never model controller compatible with it too.
@Moroboshi876 Agreed. Same here. I own an AES and a CD. I have two games for the CD and three for the AES lol.
If this thing can run actual Neo Geo cartridges, that could be enough to catch my interest. I'm a bit winded of these "mini" consoles though.
SNK: "Hey, we're making something!"
There: I fixed the article, as that is all that really happened.
@CrazyZelda79
The article says:
"a new Metal Slug title is in development for the new console, as well as other systems".
More than likely to have a Switch version too.
@YANDMAN Yeah but that's just a plug and play though, I was referring to real hardware with no emulation and with new games. SNK is making new NeoGeo hardware (whether just a re-release for their old games or a new system for new games we're not sure yet), AMD already announced that Atari will be using their new embedded processing chip, the Ryzen Embedded R1000 SoC for their upcoming Atari VCS home console, and we got Intellivision with the Amico coming soon. Still there's no new hardware from Sega and no the Sega Genesis Mini doesn't count just like how I don't count the NES and Super NES Mini.
@Onion This will probably not be a mini console, if anything it'll be a premium console like the older ones. SNK may attempt to make it cheaper though still not sure if the system would be disc based or cart based like the Switch. Would be interesting if it's cart based though.
Making new console hardware is not a wise move unless you're one of the big 3 🤔
@retro_player_22 They won't be making a brand new platform with new games for that platform fact. They do not have that level of funding. The new Metal Slug game will be in the vain of the new Samurai Showdown and for modern existing platforms. I heard this rumoured six months ago. The new hardware will be as i see it a new AES or similar system with the ability to play AES cartridged, AQll they need to do is bundle it with a multi-cart and it's job done.
LOVE the Metal Slug games, great news!
As much as I love SNK and their games, I question their ability to fund and execute the launch of a new console. The launch of the Switch Pro/Mini, PS5, and Xbox Scarlet are less than two years away. Does SNK really want to compete with that? It would be better if they remained as a third party developer like Sega.
@NintendoFan4Lyf I think it will be affordable & let's not forget about the AES was $599.99USD back in the past so SNK better get this to a lower price.
@YANDMAN If that's the case then this new Metal Slug 8 would be a NeoGeo title and not a brand new game with new engine as it too would be coming to that new system as well.
"who also revealed that a new Metal Slug title is in development for the new console, as well as other systems.
If this sentence is to be believe then the new NeoGeo console could either be a brand new system with complete backwards compatibility with the older cartridges or disc or it could be another version of the NeoGeo AES which in turns make this new Metal Slug game plays similar to the older ones which would be the stupidest thing to do as the older games had slowdown unlike Metal Slug 6 and 7 which doesn't as those two were not made using the NeoGeo game engine. Hopefully it's a new system and we got a better Metal Slug,
@Magician They probably may make it just for collector's purpose or for people who still loves arcade games. Remember back in the 90s, though SNK made the NeoGeo AES they still make ports for the other platforms as well which means the NeoGeo AES and CD systems were never really meant to compete in the home console market as those were never its goal. Its real goal was to offer the best premium home arcade experience to gamers. Even when older systems like the NES, Super NES, Turbo Grafx-16, Genesis, Jaguar, 3DO, Saturn, PS1, N64, and Dreamcast all died after the 90s, the NeoGeo AES lives on up til 2004, that's like a year before the launch of the Xbox 360 and two years before the launch of the Wii and PS3.
I'm interested in anything SNK does.
This is amazing news I have an original Neo CD console. Can’t wait to see what SNK have instore.
@retro_player_22 Ha haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa when they mean like the old games they mean "D sprite based, not lets include slowdown which is due to hardware anyways.
@YANDMAN can see why, I got very very good prices but I couldn't dream of getting them back now the prices are insane. I was lucky when I started collecting the retro scene isn't like it is now. I got an unfixed samurai showdown v special for £250 and sold it for 4 X that. Now your talking £3k to pick that up 😨
@Nessmissesmum Yeah i perioidically check on prices and feel pretty smug with some of my purchases.
Seeing as they published most of the games, they could release a $200 “classic mini” with practically everything and no cart slot, plus a $299 console with the same games plus a cart slot. As long as they got the hardware right (as in, authentic) it’d be worth it.
The new Metal Slug on Switch please!
Metal Slug xx also on Switch please!
