In addition to the Yoshi release date announcement, Nintendo has revealed Kirby's Extra Epic Yarn for the 3DS family of systems will be released in Japan on 7th March and 8th March in North America. Australia has also been locked in for the 9th March.
The title was first revealed during the September 2018 Nintendo Direct (see below) and is based on Kirby's Epic Yarn from the Wii era. Here's the description from Nintendo's PR about the enhanced version on the 3DS, which also details how amiibo functionality works:
In this enhanced version of the acclaimed Kirby’s Epic Yarn game that originally launched for the Wii system, Kirby is transported into a world made of cloth and yarn to unravel enemies, unzip secret passageways and transform into powerful vehicles. Every stage in the original Wii version is stitched in, but this Nintendo 3DS version has some new features, like Ravel Abilities that power up Kirby in fun ways, new mini-games featuring familiar faces King Dedede and Meta Knight, new furniture to personalize and decorate Kirby’s Pad, and a new Devilish mode that adds an extra layer of challenge to each stage.
Some of the Ravel Abilities include a giant yarn ball used to attack enemies, a wire sword that can slice through anything and the Nylon ability, which can generate wind for jumping higher and collecting beads.
The creative, colorful and visually stunning game also features new amiibo functionality* for compatible Kirby series amiibo figures that gives Kirby hats and abilities based on the figure used.
According to a listing on the Japanese eShop, the digital version of the game will require 11,652 blocks.

Why isn't this coming on Switch? I love Nintendo and Nintendo tend to make really smart business decisions but not releasing games like this on Switch is baffling to me.
I loved my 3DS for years. I literally put thousands of hours into games on the systems. Yes plural. I owned several.
But I just find it hard to go back to that tiny form factor at this point. The small screen, and controls... The 3DS is just stuck in an awkward place for me. Too new to feel nostalgic for. But old enough to feel distinctly obsolete.
@TAndvig Probably because they'd want to HD remaster it on Switch. On 3DS they basically just have to mod it to work with the new control scheme.
@ReaderRagfihs Really? I’m not sure this wool be great.
this game is BEGGING for use of the 3D effect.
but it's a feature that Nintendo seems to forget exists 😒
no 3D, no buy.
If it runs well, this is day one for me! Looks like a fun game.
@ReaderRagfihs @GyroZeppeli you guys are bursting at the seams with good points.
@CharlieSmile some games are using it, some don't. for example just released luigi's mansion is using it.
@manu0 I know, which is why it super boggles my mind that they didn't do it for Epic Yarn.
they added 3D to Yoshi's Wooly World.
@Heavyarms55 @ReaderRagfihs @GyroZeppeli
all these purls of wisdom have me in stitches
I liked the Wii game enough to own it in my collection, but not enough to rebuy for full price on 3DS.
@CharlieSmile @ReaderRagfihs @GyroZeppeli we seem to be on something of a tear.
@Heavyarms55 @ReaderRagfihs @GyroZeppeli
enough. these puns are getting under my skein.
If this game doesn't have 3D it might as well have been a Switch game.
@JayJ I been sayin
@CharlieSmile You entangled yourself in our fun. You are forever threaded into it.
@ReaderRagfihs @GyroZeppeli
Hard to believe there will be two first party Nintendo 3DS games coming out to start 2019. Both are remakes/ports but still, who woulda thunk it. I'll happy add it to my 3DS collection.
@ReaderRagfihs @CharlieSmile @Heavyarms55 This is becoming a cat-astrophe. This is just a game that everyone and their grandma will have fun with. Both of those were awful jokes.
@CharlieSmile @ReaderRagfihs @GyroZeppeli You think we should stop before we get more entangled?
@ReaderRagfihs @CharlieSmile @Heavyarms55 We could continue in the Chit-Chat Thread. It’s our last strand of hope.
Totally forgot this was coming. This will probably be the last 3DS game I buy.
They keep making these other 3DS and Switch games like Captain Toad and Sushi Strikers. Why wouldn’t they try to put epic yarn on switch as well?
@CharlieSmile Yoshi's wolly world was a 3d game so it was probably easier to do than this game would be. I could be wrong, but I believe Epic Yarn was mostly a 2d game so it would take more work.
I've skipped Luigi's Mansion and I'll most likely skip this too. 3DS releases are so scarce these days, I'd rather just stick with what I have in the moments that I feel like dusting it off.
It's completely silly to release Luigi's Mansion years after the sequel on the same platform, and I would have considered Kirby if they had bothered to implement 3D. Without 3D, there is virtually no reason to release software exclusively on the 3DS.
Me neither: no 3D, no double dip. Sorry. Nintendo, this game is yours and you could have done it. Remember the other 3DS Kirby games. So bad decision.
Snore zzzzzzz 😴
@TAndvig
The original artwork is almost entirely 2D, custom tailored for the screen-space resolution, which was 480p/576p on Wii. This can easily be shrunken down for the 3DS' 240p screen, but would need to be completely rewoven, if it was to look its best in 1080p. :-/
Shame too. This game in particular had me yarning for a more powerful Wii. All those fabrics would've felt great in HD!
@CharlieSmile
Everything is actual 3D models in Wooly World, whereas the art in Epic Yarn is 2D layers. Utilizing the 3D might've revealed an unnaturally sharp thin-ness to the materials, rather than adding to their thick, soft feel. But that's just my guess.
My original Wii died when i put Epic Yarn into it. So ive bad memories of this game even though wasnt its fault
When this game got announced for 3ds I started the wii version again. I just completed it 100% 2 weeks ago. I really like the game. It's too easy if you are just going to the end of the level. But if you want to find everything its a lot less easy.
The additional content tempts me... but not at full price.
I... completely forgot this was coming tbh.
Inb4 everyone complains about it not being on Switch.
It will be so good on the 3DS, like captain toad, and maybe even better. Day one for me.
so dumb to not add 3D to a re-released game. Another one to cross off my list to buy. Shame.
I love the yarn games, though im not so keen on the look of Crafted World, I wish this was coming to switch.
As much as it's great to see games still being released on the 3DS, surely this should have come to the Switch as well.
Watching the video here again, I'm reminded that "Town" is still set to come out this year. Pretty curious about that one.
@TheAwesomeBowser
Well, it is kind of frustrating. Luigi’s Mansion and this game were console games that would be great to have on the Switch. I sold my 2DS and games and all my Wii U games when I got my Switch at launch. I was expecting the Switch to be my only console and handheld since that is what it is. I can see the need to keep supporting the 3DS for a while but they could release some of these games on both platforms.
I loved it Wii. I'll grab it when I've got the budget to double dip.
Definitely will be getting this since I mainly play on my 2DS XL and never got the original. I'm glad we are still getting games for the 3DS since they said they are still supporting it. Not everything has to be on the Switch people
Okay, this is extra epic.
I like many others wish it were on the Switch. To bad they don't just port the 3ds and or Wii U Eshop to the Switch Eshop.
@CharlieSmile Indeed!! No 3D, no buy. So lazy.
