Wowzers. We reported on super hard platformer Volgarr The Viking coming to Wii U and 3DS eShop way back in 2015 - time sure does fly! Anyway, the Wii U version is still happening, along with a Switch eShop version according to this recent tweet from Crazy Viking Studio:
A love letter to the tough-as-old-boots 2D action platformers of the '80s and '90s, Volgarr takes a large helping of inspiration from the likes of Rastan and Ghouls 'n Ghosts. We have to say we hope it all comes to pass as this looks like a whole heap of fun. We've no idea what has happened to the 3DS version, but we've asked the developer and once we know for sure we'll update this post.
Let us know if you plan to flex your gaming muscles and step into the arena with Volgarr the Viking with a comment below.

Looks like fun. I'll be sure to watch out for it
I hope no one wastes money on this. I got it for free with Xbox Gold back when I owned my X1, and I still felt ripped off by it.
Wow this soon? Awesome!
*Wowsers trousers.
I like how the trailer presents two different parts, the first where you've just begun and die stupid deaths everywhere, and the second in which you are already a battle-hardened badass mowing down hordes of enemies in almost cinematic fashion.
@Spike6958 Yeah I remember reading a lot of negative impressions on this one. With so many games to play, I'm passing on this no doubt.
Love how the Wii U gets a confirmation while PS4 and Vita don't. Quite ironic but I'm all for it
Honestly it looks better than Tiny Barbarian, but just my opinion
@Fake-E-Lee Thanks man. I grew up with that show. The early to mid 90's rap was to best.
I find it hard to derive enjoyment from anything like Ghouls and Ghosts. I remember spending hours trying to get past the first level of Super Ghouls and Ghosts at a friend's house. It was kind of fun, but mostly frustrating. Rather play Megaman or Shovelknight, at least I can get good at those eventually.
@Captain_Gonru Yeah, I'm in EU. I think it was back in 2014/15, when I still owned my X1.
@Jimmy_G_Buckets It’s great, but not for everyone. It’s a really hard game that requires you to play deliberately and without mistakes. One bad input can screw everything up.
I played it for a few hours on PC and got to the second boss a few times. I will get it again for Switch and see if I can get further.
It's not even a good game. It's more like "hey kids, remember how 8 bit games were super hard back in the day?"
The game is okay. Not great. Not terrible. Just okay. Can be really frustrating.
This is genuinely excellent and tough too i have it on the dreamcast will definitely get thus for the switch
@rushiosan Kids wouldn’t remember that, though...
More seriously, the game is a lot more interesting than that. It has a pretty complex and versatile move set, where you can dodge roll, shoot arrows into walls and use as platforms, etc, and the level design is really good. The levels I’ve played (especially the first one) are like puzzles you need to figure out, and on successive plays, a dance that you get better at as the controls become more natural.
I like. I will totally wait for a review.
+10 points for the heavy metal! m/
@Fake-E-Lee - Goodness gracious, Blackstar just showed up in a NL thread?!? Wore a hole in that album, then Madvillain came along and overtook my personal top spot. Hasn't been unseated since. If I let nostalgia guide me, 36 Chambers of Death is way up there too.
See the Wii U is not dead after all, I hate devs that just because the Switch came out that they end support of the Wii U version and jump shift instead of supporting both (Yooka-Laylee, Bloodstain, etc.). Anyways the game looks fun, reminds me so much of Rastan on the Sega Master System and Legend for the Super NES.
@Fake-E-Lee - Did we just become best friends?
Too bad I suck at difficult platformers. I love the look of it.
IT looks cool, you think it’ll scratch that retro itch, but it actually sucks. Just not much fun.
Got it free on XBL & simply was not impressed. Maldita Castilla is MUCH better.
So it's Rastan Saga. I'LL TAKE IT!
@Alikan I'm not going to tell you Ghouls 'n Ghosts can't get frustrating and I won't try to sell you on it. I just want to say that Ghouls 'n Ghosts(arcade, mega drive/Genesis) is very different from Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts. They have completely different mechanics and design. To put it in perspective, I like Ghouls 'n Ghosts a lot(just played it again a couple of weeks back), but hate Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts. The original GnG isn't as hard as many think or as hard as the others. But if it's not your style, that's fine.
Moves look limited. Very basic. But it does look fun, with the rock music in the background.
@sdelfin yeah, sadly not for me. I also tried the NES version for an hour. Couldn't get past the first red devil. Lol.
@Alikan yeah, that first game in the series, Ghosts 'n Goblins, is a nasty, spiteful game. I don't enjoy that one either.
@Jimmy_G_Buckets, @bimmy-lee & @Fake-E-Lee you must venture westward in your quest for 90s true school Hip Hop. Hieroglyphics, Freestyle Fellowship (Project Blowed,) The Pharcyde... I mean, Freestyle Fellowship destroyed Wu-Tang live on the Wake Up Show at the peak of Wu's popularity in a battle that took place on both coasts. DJ Marley Marl hosted Wu and Sons of Man on the east coast and Sway & Tech hosted Freestyle Fellowship & Common on the west. It was epic.
Some really groundbreaking & innovative rap has been overshadowed by the memory of the moment in the 90s when the east coast underground surfaced and was mainstream.

We should probably start a forum topic for this, huh?
@Fake-E-Lee "This conversation could go for days my friends."
And we would be all the wiser and more enriched for it ✊😀
I'm kind of surprised to see all the negative experiences with this game but at the same time I guess I kind of get it.
My only experience with this game was at a party at a friend's house a year or two back and we were playing some Xbox One swapping before a few games before they broke this one out. There were actually two Xbox Ones since there were a lot of us and a bunch of people were playing Halo on the other while the rest of were taking turns on this. No one could beat the first level. I'm not very comfortable with an Xbox controller since I don't have an Xbox but I love old school games so I decided to try it. I died a LOT but in the end started getting further than anyone else. I actually beat the first level (and maybe even second?) and before I knew it everyone, even the guys originally gaming on the other Xbox, were watching and cheering me on. It was a great experience.
Honestly the game is hard as nails but I'm not sure the last time I felt that accomplished for beating a level in the game. I'm thinking of picking this up for Switch even though it won't be the same without a whole crowd.
I really wanted to like this on pc. It doesn't feel very responsive though. The difficulty might be a tad overboard too, it doesn't suit a game that doesn't control well to be brutally hard
@NImH @Fake-E-Lee
I try not to get bogged down in coast battles, but I like all the hip hop bands we've listed. I've often thought of starting a forum along the lines of, "What albums are currently in your rotation". I like all forms of music from hip hop to gamelan.
@NImH I liked Del the funky homosapian
@NImH @Fake-E-Lee @GrailUK
I just started a new forum, What are you listening to right now? Hope to hear from you all. Del is great.
@bimmy-lee totally didn't mean to sound like I was saying one coast was better than the other... I mean, Common is from Chicago... Just saying that the 90s east coast underground revival we're seeing now is only half the story. There's a lot to be discovered from my coast.
@NImH - Not a thing at all. I wouldn't hold it against you if you do have a coastal bias, especially since you're on a coast. I'm landlocked in the Midwest. I just started a music forum topic. I've wanted to for a while, but I didn't know if anyone was interested. Hope to see you there!
Rastan, sure--but GnG? I never got even the slightest hint of a GnG vibe from Vogarr.
I already have this on Steam, but I'll probably buy it again for Switch. Seems I never get around to playing controller games on my PC anymore.
Yeah, if it is SUB $10.00 I will pick it up for sure.
Is that some kind of mechanical flying ship stage I can see in the trailer? Isn't that a bit out of place for a game about a Viking??
I love the art style — anyone know if the whole soundtrack is metal? If so, that's a major bonus for me. I can deal with tough, but definitely will wait for reviews and pricing.
Fun game for people that like to get their behinds handed to them. This game is hardcore!
Art direction looks really really bland and enemy design looks super generic. BUT if it plays well, and feels like a Ghosts n Ghouls, I'd be suckered into buying it.
Personally I thought it was fantastic on Xbox 1 and gameplay wise it's very much in the vein of the old Rastan Saga coin op.
It's tough but it's manageable, it's a good challenge. I've never felt it was unfair. Like the way Cuphead is. Although if you can't handle challenging 2D platformers then you might want to avoid it.
