Shin Megami Tensei is a series familiar to DS and 3DS owners that keep a good eye on the output of Atlus, with Shin Megami Tensei IV: Apocalypse due in North America on 20th September. With various new entries and remasters / re-releases in recent years, it's an IP that's popped up a lot on these pages.
Plenty of followers, like this writer, are likely unaware of the rich history behind this IP, however. It was Japan-only for quite some time, appearing on a host of systems in various forms; for less-involved followers its extensive library of games may be surprising. Thankfully Did You Know Gaming? has a video to reveal some interesting details about the IP's history; there's even a fun bit of Virtual Boy trivia. Check it out below.
It's a welcome history lesson ahead of the arrival of Apocalypse, in any case. Thankfully it's a series very much part of the Nintendo scene right now, which will hopefully remain the case for years to come.

I'll seriously buy any console an open-world version of Nocturne releases for. I'm not even joking.
Also, Apocalypse hype!
I've never played this or Persona. The closest I ever got was thinking of getting Persona Q on the 3DS, cause of how similar it looked to Etrian Odyssey. Really hope I get a chance to play them before they get too hard to find xD
I love the novels and been playin the snes and ds games lately. Such a great series. Cant wait for SMT IV Apocalypse.
To me the worst thing they did with the main line games was put part 4 on 3ds. It really took the atmosphere out of the game for me. To see real atmosphere, check out ps2's SMT Nocturne, in the US that is, has a different name in Europe, and SMT Digital Devil Saga, part 1. Part 2 is interesting, but personally, not as good as part 1.
@TeslaChippie If you like EO games you will love Persona Q. In many ways it takes what EO does and makes it better. Listen to the person above me and get a copy.
Glad I watched that! I didn't even know about 80% of the stuff said in that video. Makes me like Atlus even more!
I already know it originated from Digital Devil Story, But I didn't know it was from a 'non' Atlus resource. I've read the story and it was pretty good, But I'll try to find if it has succeeding volumes.
Also, "Kichijoji" has been used in SMT IV. Remember, Kiccigiorgi.
Kiedis of Red Hot? WTH. lol
@Tiredman
RE: "and SMT Digital Devil Saga, part 1. Part 2 is interesting, but personally, not as good as part 1."
Even if the sequel is not as good as the first, The combined experience is remarkable. Superb Story, Technical Battle System, And remains true to the SMT dark atmosphere. Easily one of the best RPG I've played in the PS2 (along with other greats like Shadow Hearts 2 etc.)
I regret not being able to play Nocturne, But I will, one of these days.
love shin megami.i think it might be my favorite series.classic stuff.
Shin Megami Tensei: What fundamentalist Christians thought Pokemon was like
Playing Persona 4Golden right now! Waiting for Apocalypse and Persona5!!!
SMT is in my top 3 franchises all time, alongside with Fire Emblem and Pokemon.
@Piersen
I'm a "fundamentalist Christian", if by fundamentalist you mean actually base beliefs on the Bible and not these new age teachings.
I don't think anyone confuses Pokemon with games involving demons, unless it's out of their own ignorance.
@JaxonH
Oldie but goodie
No need to be defensive, I mostly just meant people who noisily stuff the Bible down people's throats, see sin and heathens everywhere in others, but their lives don't show anything of Jesus's message.
@Piersen
Ya that's everywhere nowadays. If more Christians 1 were actually saved (aka really Christians) and had changed lives, and 2 focused on spreading the message of Christ (do best to stop sinning and believe) rather than just pointing out everyone's faults (let God deal with convicting people after they're saved- no sense trying to change somebody externally beforehand) then we do have a lot less hypocrisy and a lot more people listening.
God knows I'm the biggest sinner of them all. The only difference is I'm forgiven, and never try to choose wrong. Usually it's spur of the moment emotion that gets the best of me. Been trying to deal with that for years.
@Piersen Oh me and my mom loved watching these back then. She was a devout Christian, but knew that wackadoos like this guy were way to serious and had a stick up their butt. She thought it was funny because of the way I would rage and bring up counters to a pre-recorded show. I wish I could go back in time and hand him a copy of Nocturne or Devil Survivor. His rage boner would pierce the havens.
