It's been a big deal for Pokéfanatics, as last week we were given a couple of new trailers for the upcoming installations of the handheld series - Pokémon Sun and Moon.
From these two glorious pieces of footage, we learned what our fates would hold - and that's who and what the new Starter Pokémon are. In case you've been living under a Geodude, they are Rowlet (Grass/Flying), Litten (Fire), and Popplio (Water).
Anyway, the talk of the town this week comes from YouTuber pdwinnall, as his snooping around on the Japanese Pokémon Sun and Moon website has unveiled some potential leaks for each Starter Pokémon's future evolution typings. Without simply regurgitating the process of how he achieved this, he used the 'Inspect Element' tool available on Google Chrome and noticed some inconsistencies among the type icons' URLs.
In summary, his findings indicate that Rowlet will remain Grass/Flying, Litten will become Ground/Fire, and Popplio will become Water/Fighting. However, it should be noted that since producing the video fans have called out a potential error in pdwinnall's conclusions, as a Starter Pokémon's primary type always goes first. Therefore, the community (along with pdwinnall) are drawing up the general conclusion of Rowlet actually changing its dual typing from Grass/Flying to Grass/Ground - a first for a Starter Pokémon to do this - with Litten remaining a Fire type all throughout, and Popplio becoming Water/Fighting as previously mentioned. This writer believes the YouTuber will be producing a new video to explain this update due to a comment he left on the original video, so stay tuned if you're interested.
Have a watch of the video below and let us know what you think.

Regardless of whether the leaks are legit or not, after all the trolling, whited out box arts "because of the camera's flash" and similarly unpleasant teasing, Game Freak had this one coming.
I don't find this super convincing. It could just be they are still uploading all the graphics to the site and haven't gotten around to all of it yet.
I saw this on Facebook last night. About 12 hours ago. A lot of people got in to it. All had interesting perspectives.
Please no. Rowlet should remain a flying type not a ground. It'll make me sad if it doesn't. Litten should be a dark fire not even a joke at this point! And popplio yeah that'll work!
It makes sense for the switch. There is an owl native to Hawaii that stays close to the ground. This owl is even a day owl, opposite to the usual. This fits perfectly for the sun/moon motif.
It could just be types of unannounced pokemons like the dog pokemon we saw in the trailer of Corocoro he could be a ground type
I don't know a lot about the inspect feature of Chrome but it sounds like the types are anchored (<a></a>) in the html code to the corresponding Pokemon. That would mean theese are types for the starers and not other random Pokemon.
You could could probably sift through the html coding on the page and find all sorts of goodies if they are front loading code to make it easier later on. I would go look but I'm too lazy lol.
This does assume the official website is actually correct and is correct 100% of the time.
Well the official site has leaked things before (e.g. Mega Slowbro, where the Korean site got embargo date wrong and put the page live about a week early) but it has also made mistakes (it showed a screenshot or footage of Blaziken using Ice Punch).
I'm going with the second explanation: Grass/Ground, Fire and Water/Fighting. Rowlet can deliver powerful kicks and it looks like a ground owl as well.
Besides, the change is unexpected, and maybe something they want to do to surprise the players.
Really wanted Rowlet to stay Grass/Flying. I'm hoping this isn't true.
there is a chance it could be a fire/rock so its a triangle. grass/flying beats water/fighting while fire/rock beats grass flying
Now, just putting this out there, but they were flirting with three types this last generation (cf. Trick or Treat, Forest's Curse). Could they be crazy enough to have a Grass/Flying/Ground?
While it does sound certifiably insane, hear me out: it's generally been the conventional wisdom that Grass is underpowered, as it rarely leaves its own type, is resisted by most competitive mons, and has a ton of weaknesses.
Putting those three types together, we'd have:
Immune to Electric and Ground
Half Damage from Grass and Fighting
Double damage from Fire and Flying
8x(!!) damage from Ice
files nails
Oh boy, "legit" leaks. I guess mega flygon is confirmed finally.
(Can we not go through this again with sun and moon? Not a single damn thing that wasn't in offical corocoro on the exact same dates was legit for oras.)
Suddenly....I lost interest into getting Litten as my starter after looking at its final evolution.
@MegaBeedrill Normally, I'd agree with you, and I'm reluctant to jump to any huge conclusions - they could just be revealing a couple non-starrters later. But, coming from the pokemon.co.jp website, this has a lot more viability than the average leak (and it's easily replicable).
So here's an attempt to separate fact and speculation:
FACT - The site in question is http://www.pokemon.co.jp/ex/sun_moon/pokemon/partner_01/ (and 02 and 03)
FACT - The site pulls images from http://www.pokemon.co.jp/ex/sun_moon/pokemon/images/icon01.png (and 02-06)
FACT - We have four typings announced: Grass (01), Flying (02), Fire(04), and Water (05), and two unannounced: Ground (03) and Fighting (06)
FACT - Pokemon starters have traditionally been presented in the order of Grass-Fire-Water, and dual typing for them always retains the original element as the primary type.
SPECULATION - Ground and Fighting are the two other types that will appear among the starter pokemon.
SPECULATION - Given the positioning, Ground will appear before Fire (i.e., for Grass); and Fighting will appear after water (i.e., for Water)
SPECULATION - Though unusual, there isn't anything preventing Litten from adopting Grass, Flying, or Ground types as well. Similarly, Popplio could potentially adopt Grass, Flying, Ground, or Fire.
CAVEAT - The types could have been uploaded in error (i.e., wrong type uploaded). Or they could be for another announced pokemon. Or the could be out of order.
I'd put the confidence level on the initial impression being accurate at about 80%.
@ProfAllister : Three types makes sense for quite a number of Pokémon… however, a third type will make some Pokémon 8x vulnerable to certain types (which will render some Pokémon competitively useless).
Here are suggestions for currently existing Pokémon…
Charizard - Fire/Flying/Dragon
Beedrill - Bug/Poison/Flying
Venomoth - Bug/Poison/Flying
Gyarados - Water/Flying/Dragon
Tyranitar - Rock/Dark/Ground
Lugia - Psychic/Flying/Water
Celebi - Psychic/Grass/Fairy
Dustox - Bug/Poison/Flying
Vibrava - Ground/Dragon/Flying
Flygon - Ground/Dragon/Flying
Latias - Dragon/Psychic/Flying
Latios - Dragon/Psychic/Flying
Jirachi - Steel/Psychic/Fairy
Drapion - Poison/Bug/Dark
Giratina (Origin Forme) - Ghost/Dragon/Flying
Hydreigon - Dark/Dragon/Flying
Volcarona - Bug/Fire/Flying
Fletchinder - Fire/Flying/Normal
Talonflame - Fire/Flying/Normal
Inkay - Dark/Psychic/Water
Malamar - Dark/Psychic/Water
Dragalge - Poison/Dragon/Water
Hoopa (Confined) - Psychic/Ghost/Dark
And the Normal type can perhaps be added as a third type for some existing dual-type Pokémon as well.
@DoctorOverbuild @Spagem what its staying grass/flying?
where you seeing its changing?
Lol, Rowlet just can't escape that double Ice Weakness.
Given, if true, Grass/Ground is a better typing than Grass/Flying, but it's not an amazing typing either way.
@Uberchu Says it in the article.
"Therefore, the community (along with pdwinnall) are drawing up the general conclusion of Rowlet actually changing its dual typing from Grass/Flying to Grass/Ground - a first for a Starter Pokémon to do this"
@Spagem oh my bad.
