I bought "Spy Chameleon" at the release yesterday, since I've heard good things about it on Steam. And there was a 20% introductory offer since I owned a previous EnjoyUp product on the Wii U (in my case "Abyss" and "Unepic"), so the already low price got even lower. (BTW, I didn't enjoy Abyss or Unepic that much, but Spy Chameleon is a fun game!)

I was going to write a mini review of the game, but then I found this youtube review that kind of said what I would like to say:

In addition to that, I'd just add:

  • The game consists of 75 levels divided in 5 chapters (15 levels each).
  • The movement of the character can be combined with L and R for slow and fast movement.
  • There are game achievements that can be viewed on a separate page in the game, but I personally don't think the achievements add that much to the gaming experience. Some achievements can only be unlocked on hard difficulty.
  • Each level have an online leaderboard
  • Off-screen play on the Gamepad is supported.
  • On the TV screen, it's a 1080p/60fps game.

You comparing this to Spikey Walls' graphics is rather an insult to EnjoyUp, since Spikey Walls is more like Game Boy graphics, and Spy Chameleon is at least on PS2 level.
Anyway, this is a puzzle game with a focus on color! Too detailed and colorful graphics would distract from the gameplay.
And I think they're ok. Nothing outstanding, but serviceable. And compared to Spikey Walls it is extremely detailed.
Maybe play more worlds, not just the initial first one?

1. Of course!

2. Yes. I'm with you on that one. With one exception: The earlier Spikey Walls argument.

It just sounded like you don't see the (huge) difference in the technical aspect and obvious work hours put into the graphics of those two games.

On one hand (Spy Chameleon) you have animated 128bit 3D models, 75 stages someone had to design, and 5 different looking worlds, and on the other hand (Spikey Walls) you have something straight from the Atari / pre-NES-era: just one stage (if you can even call it a stage) with almost nonexistent graphics and animation. I think it's the first "Nintendo" game where you can even count the graphics just by watching! Indeed, Spikey Walls has 2 graphics! 2 graphics for the whole game!! Now, looking at the first stage of Spy Chameleon I can count... phew... it's about 70 graphics in just the first stage.

I think it's unfair to compare the graphics to a really simple 2D game. The 3D models and some of the animations (like the cob webs moving while move past them) are quite nicely done.

However, I also agree that the game would benefit a lot if the graphics was "better". Currently, the game has a very anonymous art style. And the graphics assets has little visual variations (a rug always look the same, a chair always look the same). And there are no additional animations in the game that aren't part of the actual gameplay.

One other thing is that the music played during a level is randomly changing when a level is restarted from scratch. (IMO, gameplay benefits if the music is designed specifically for the level.)

It's a good game at a good price, but I get the feeling this game could be a really excellent title if they would work more on bringing more "life" to the presentation.
