Topic: Wii U, Virtual Console, and Controllers?

Hello all, I'm a new member of the Forums and have just recently purchased the Wii U. I am very interested in playing old games made available on the Virtual Console and was wondering if I can use the Wii U Pro Controller for these games. In addition, if I am to download old Wii Virtual Console games that have not been updated for the Wii U, will I be able to use the Wii U Pro controller on those? If not, is there another alternative to the game pad for this?

You can't use the wii u pro controller for non-updated wii virtual console games, and the alternative is the wii classic controller.

However, the Wii U pro controller will work with any games that have been updated for the wii u virtual console.

Does the Wii Classic Pro controller work as well? Or does the pro not work?

The Classic Controller Pro is recognized as a Classic Controller, so yes, it will work with any game that supports the CC.

I'm pretty okay.

You can play in the gamepad but only like a small TV screen, you need the wiimote or the classic to play retro games but it is a big step.

I hope the OP doesn't mind me hijacking this thread a little. I too bought a Wii U earlier this week and as a 43 year old who owned all the old Nintendo systems I would love to get into the VC again on the wii u.

Trouble is there are no N64 games

Also I have about 4000 stars on club Nintendo which will allow me to buy wii shop points but these won't work on wii u apparently.

At the moment I don't have a wii mote or a nunchuk so I can't access the wii menu on my wii u.

If I did get one, can I access the wii shop through this method. And if so, can I download these games?
If I can will they work on my HD TV? (I seem to remember problems when I had my wii. I seem to remember purchasing games that wouldn't work). Refresh rates or resolution problems or something?
And my wii mote would work as a controller for these games?
If I got a points card off the stars catalogue would this enable me to buy games using this method?

Thanks in advance

@norwichred All you would need is a Wii remote and everything should work fine. Well, you'd also need a classic controller to play SNES or n64 games. Possibly others, too, but it will say on the Wii Shop Channel which games require which controllers.

Cool and thanks! I had no idea the wi u could do this! And the cards will be ok too?

Just to be clear, you would need a "Wii Points Card." A "Nintendo eShop Card" will not work on the Wii Shop Channel. I checked online and it looks like there should still be places where you can get the Wii Points cards still, or you can use a credit / debit card to purchase points. But, the Wii Shop Channel is completely separate from the eShop, and so any money you put into the Wii Shop Channel cannot be used on the Wii U eShop. Also, any money you put into the eShop cannot be used in the Wii Shop Channel.

Thank you. They only so the wii points card on the stars catalogue anyway. They don't do ones you can use on the eshop. I am waiting for my wii u to show up as registered (I did it four days ago and if hasn't shown) and then I can order 1500 points
