I've asked this in a few different places and I've done a lot of research on my own, but I still haven't come across an answer. Hopefully somebody here can help!

If you use the vertical screens view (seen here: https://youtu.be/ij-0z8vkRrs?t=94), can you still play non-stylus games normally on your TV?

I know that the image would be sideways on the gamepad, but if you ignore the image on the gamepad (but still hold it normally), can you still use the buttons to normally control the image on the TV (left would still be left, A would still be A, etc.)? This is the only screen set up that actually appeals to me, but only if you can actually play, obviously, ha.

Nobody ever talks about this being possible, and people say that this set up is only ideal for stylus-only games, but I'm not sure if that's because it doesn't work or because people assume that you care about the image on the gamepad and would never actually want this option.

Yes.

Edgey, Gumshoe, Godot, Sissel, Larry, then Mia, Franziska, Maggie, Kay and Lynne.

I'm throwing my money at the screen but nothing happens!

Yes.

That's incorrect. The controls are remapped when DS Virtual Console titles are set to the Vertical Screens option.

You will not find it playable when it's set to this. This is why every YouTuber that put something up after Yoshi's Island DS appeared a few months back, suddenly looked completely inept at playing the game when they switched it to the Vertical Screens setting in the process of showing off the various options.

It's sadly meant for use in titles that rely on touch control, such as the minigames in New Super Mario Bros. Not of any use in a game such as the one in question, Yoshi's Island DS, and other titles that rely on conventional control.

The only dual screen option that works in cases like Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time is the heavily letterboxed option that decreases the size of the picture even further by featuring that pointless DS frame.

And for those of you gaming on a monitor that is able to be rotated 90 degrees, be aware that similar modifications also happen with the Side-By-Side screen option as well, including the d-pad orientation changing (Up on the d-pad moves Yoshi right, for an example of the issue). So what could've been a perfect option in these two games for such folks, is instead completely useless.

I found it recently that, if you hold the L+Down buttons, the in-game camera will scroll down, allowing you to play the game top-screen, for the most part.

Who are you?
