Topic: DS frames on gamepad could be removed?

Do you think Nintendo would remove the DS frames thus making the screens a little bit bigger when playing on the gamepad? That would be the best way to play some DS games on gamepad.

I don't see why they can't do this.

I'd be happy enough with them just using the "hold the gamepad sideways" view on the TV but with the controls still working normally. Meaning like, it would be impossible to play off-TV on the gamepad as it would be sideways, but you'd get the best view on the TV and you could hold the gamepad normally to control it. Seems weird to me that with all of the options they gave us, that's not one of them.

I know your post was more about playing on the gamepad, but I just thought I'd throw this similar thought into the thread.

They already basically have it as large as possible on the gamepad.

The heavy amount of letterboxing followed by that huge DS border, is only present on the television screen. The DS border on the gamepad screen by comparison, is largely only occupying empty space as evidenced by this screenshot grabbed off YouTube. There looks to be only a few lines of resolution being wasted at the top, and that's likely because of scaling concerns, I suspect. Worthy trade-off if the slight enlargement possible would result in noticeable image degradation.

For something like Yoshi's Island DS, hopefully they eventually allow it to be properly displayed as large as possible on the tv as well. There's room to more than double the amount of screen area used by this game, within the constraints of the original aspect ratio while also maintaining the proper gap between the two screens. Switch to Vertical Screens to see how it should look (Sadly, that screen option mixes the controls up and without configurable controls, can't be fixed to allow Yoshi's Island to be played on the tv while properly zoomed in).

Best available option for the tv...

The ideal option for the tv, which currently doesn't exist (This is a mock up that I made, which is why the DS border is gone)...

I wouldn't mind the DS border, if it just filled otherwise unused space, as seen by the gamepad screen (Although I suspect plasma owners would rather see such a needless static border be eliminated entirely, as seen with my mock-up above or the Vertical Screens display option with their DS emulator).

When making the screen bigger on the gamepad it has the option to put some filters to smooth the image, I wouldn't mind playing Yoshi's Island DS with filters and smooting images on the gamepad as long as I can play Yoshi's Island in a proper way (like in the original DS), a centimer of stretching won't hurt that much the quality of the image while using the filters when playing on gamepad.

They should have allowed a personal configuration of the screens display options besides the ones included like some emulators out there allow users (maybe with an update?). I prefer to play GBA (and now DS) games on the gamepad cos I think is the ideal experience regarding quality of image cos if I play them in a large HDTV the quality of image suffers a lot even with filters.

That is really stupid, and looks cheap as hell to just have a picture of a DS there. That's total free downloadable emulator style right there instead of clean sleek Nintendo. The side by side one doesn't make much sense either from this standpoint, but luckily it works just as imagined with bottom screen on gamepad and top on TV.

The screen smoothing filter just turns it into a blurry mess on the tv, based off the videos I've seen and the reports that I've read.

Doubt that clicking the right analog stick to enable it does any favors on the gamepad screen.

Which sadly is a pretty lousy option where this game is concerned, and one that will only be even worse when the next 1st party release that used a screen layout like this appears someday.

You'd have a fighting chance at playing and enjoying Yoshi's Island DS, but with Metroid Prime Pinball, displaying the upper screen on the tv and the bottom screen on the gamepad, simply isn't practical for any sane person. The action is too fast and is going between screens too frequently, to ever be remotely enjoyable with that display option.

We really need customizable controls more than anything else, which would allow us to utilize the Vertical Screens display option for a properly zoomed in viewpoint (Or for the small minority playing on a display that can be rotated vertically, the Side by Side option would be just perfect for such folks in a game such as Yoshi's Island DS, Metroid Prime Pinball, and Contra IV).

I wish they'd at least let you change the look of the frame since I think the original DS is a damn ugly system. I'd much rather have DS Lite or DSi frames.

Are they all integer scaling ? I don't think I would choose fuzzy ever even if the option existed. (I barely touched most DS games due to that problem with the 3DS - DSi XL is fine).

I have WarioWare Touched (or whatever it's called) and it looks fine. I agree that screen-smoothing is a bit of a mixed bag: I don't use it with classic arcade games like the Namco collections, but with Mr. Driller 2 it seems fine. I can't remember if I have it enabled for Advance Wars, but that looks good regardless and I didn't see any benefit in the DS Wario game. I think that if you're dealing with a lot of fine detail it's not going to benefit, but possibly big chunky sprites or polygons would look better?
