I'm currently playing through Zelda 2, and since superweirdadam decided to disable his BL comments again, I can't spam him with questions there anymore. Guess I'll have to do it here now.

k, so I'm a bit confused as to what I should do right now, haha. I've watched some YouTube walkthroughs, and it seems everyone has their own order of doing things. Right now I have access to Death Mountain and the swamp (second) palace. Adam's already recommended that I beat the second palace before I go to Death Mountain, though I know a few people beat the mountain first so they can get some handy upgrades and a shortcut.

Question is, which should I do first? I've found a couple of keys and opened the same number of doors in the palace and I feel like I'm making some decent progress, but at the same time Death Mountain doesn't seem too long if you know where to go.

If I remember correctly I went to Death Mountain first so I could get the hammer so that way I could open up more of the map and get heart containers and magic spells from some of the towns that I couldnt get to without the hammer. But that was just me I liked to be a little over powered for the palaces so they wouldnt give me to much of a problem.

Well I've almost finished the second palace. Just got the hand glove and leveled up once more. I'm guessing all that's left is the boss. :3

The second dungeon is not hard. Death Mountain is hard. Remember that when you complete a temple, you max out your experience, so beat the boss right after you've leveled up, get an extra level up from clearing the temple, and then take on the more difficult Death Mountain.

Regarding Backloggery, I thought about keeping my profile open for just that purpose, but really, I spend way too much time online as it is. It's nice to just have one site to visit after I've checked my mail and RSS. Glad you made this thread instead, though remember that my advice is the best.

I actually started playing the game yesterday briefly. I had a save file already at the second palace, with the same spells. I always focus on leveling up attack though, so I think our levels are slightly different. I find it's easy enough to refill magic when you need, so I give that lowest priority, and you can use magic to refill health.

Anyway, beat the boss easily and quit right after that. Might play it some more and keep up with your progress so I can be of more help, but not sure I'm in the mood to play much in the way of long or involving single-player games right now, and I don't want to be burnt out by the time Other M graces my Wii's disc slot.

lol, I'm always scared I'll game over and lose all my experience, so I usually just level up whenever I'm able to. Playing it smart can sometimes be dumb, I guess. (also, by the way, I'm keeping my stats in the first post updated)

Anyway yeah, this is definitely getting more entertaining... I just wish I didn't have to trek so much to get back to palaces. :/ I can't wait till I get the downward thrust! :3

I wouldn't be concerned about having to retrace your steps after game over. I know it's not a proper comparison since I've played the game a lot, but it took me little more than five minutes to get to the second palace. And with each palace you'll get new items that make the journey faster. You'll soon have the hammer. Then you'll be able to take the road all the way to the graveyard and only walk through a few enemy-spawning zones to the next palace. Then the next item you get will allow you to get to the fourth dungeon without any battles at all, I think. Then you get another item... etc. Two of the later dungeons (especially the final one) take a bit longer, but not so much.

Hm, okay. I can usually make it there in a few minutes, but it's still rather annoying.

this is a little off topic, but google zelda fps and you can find a fps version of zelda 2! it's really well made.

I've made a huge mistake.

I could see being annoyed maybe if you're dying repeatedly, but I usually quit after I've died once or twice, so it never seemed like a big deal. I enjoy replaying the short levels on the way. And thankfully the only palace that is very difficult to get to -- the last one -- you can restart at the beginning of the palace.

This is a change they made for the English version, I believe, one of quite a few, though I don't remember most of them. I think the palaces were all the same color in the Japanese version -- and if so, what a great change.

Oh man, yeah. I hate it in some of those old games where all the dungeons are the same color. Drives me insane, haha. Thanks for telling me about the final palace, that's very reassuring (I've seen a map of it! ), haha.

Yea, you will probably want a map. It takes forever without one -- though I think that's part of the fun.

By the way, remember when I told you there was an extra life in a cave near the swamp palace? You knew I was joking, right? Ha ha ha, I'm always pulling one over the ole Pix. However, seriously, there is an extra life one tile down and left from the boulder in front of that cave in the swamp (not the caves above and to the right of the swamp, but actually in it). Again, don't get it! Make note of it, and wait until you need it.

I just beat Death Mountain. That "always go left" trick someone mentioned didn't work. You quickly don't have an option to go left. Wasn't as hard as I recall, but I had my attack up to five and have played it a bazillion times, so I still think my warning was well advised.

No I didn't and you suck.

And I thought you always went right, hah. Well, I guess I'll figure it out once I get there.

Adam

Maybe, I don't know.

I just beat palace three. Blue knight, how I loathe thee. This guy is pretty much the hardest enemy in the game, probably including bosses, too, haha, until the final palace. At least for me.

Currently at A5 M5 L6. If leveling were even, it'd be more like A8 M1 L1, but when my next attack level is at 3000 and the other two are at most half that, kinda hard for me to click cancel.

I wish real life were more like Zelda 2. I just got to a new town. Woman: "I am thirsty." I go get water a few steps away, bring it to her. Woman: "You have water. Come to my house." Of course, if I were to go inside and find that not only is she nowhere to be found but she keeps her grandpa locked in the basement, maybe it's for the best.

Geez dude, wait for me. D:

And I agree, the minimalistic dialog is so appropriate and hilarious.

Not my fault you keep wasting time on inferior games. That barely took long at all. Already got up and down stabs plus the next two spells. Ready for palace four now.

It's not even unique to the translation - the Japanese version had a lot of really clunky sentences squeezed into much too small text boxes, too.
That's how games were back then.

I always forget which upgrades are where, but if you mean the cave south of start, I would guess a lot of people overlook that. I don't think I got whatever's in there the first time I played through the game.

I didn't either, and I got really mad because it would have helped.
