SMB3 is a million times easier than Mega Man 1-3 and 9. I don't remember 4-7 well enough to comment.

This SMB3 is arguably the easiest of the series.

@Chatham - this is considerably pre-emptive, but I'm working on a side-scroller currently...even a playable alpha that could provide me with meaningful gameplay-feedback is a little ways off, but I'd be honored if you'd give it a try, and summarily some feedback when that time comes.

I'd be more than happy to put my testing skills to work on your title. E-mail me @ mallrat425@&...

Of the NES Marios, without a doubt.

SMB3 is definitely easier than Mega Man. Heck, it was the first Mario game I could actually beat! I still haven't beaten ANY Mega Man, to this very day.

SM World was the first I beat, with 3 coming in second place. I never even got to Wily in any Mega Man except 9, and I still can't beat him.

I'm classed as a casual gamer by my peers - simply because I own a Wii instead of a 360. However I class myself as a hardcore gamer - I have plenty of rare collector's titles (the likes of Panzer Dragoon Saga and Radient Silvergun just touch the surface), my favourite game all time is Shenmue and its sequel, I can not be defeated in a game of Street Fighter (any version including 3) by anyone I know and I've been big into games since the C64 era.

Of course, to my friends who don't seem to have ever played anything other than Gears of War and Pro Evo, just owning a Wii makes you a casual gamer. It's a strange world.

They say I'm casual too. Be it playing games on emulators, the Wii, DSi, or older console, I am playing a game every day.

Casual, reasons why is because I loved Nintendo ever since I first played Super Mario All-Stars, SMB3 was my first choice in the game. I like games that focus on fun, fluid and addictive gameplay, I like 360 and all but when I play shooters like Halo and Call of Duty 4, all it ever did was give me anger issues and I was on the urge to throw the controller at the wall and it wasn't mine. I am also a regular gamer who buys games that get released in the market and I am hardcore for playing games like Contra and stuff. SCREW XBOX AND PS3, GO WII!!!!

Also, I doubt San Andreas surpassed SMB3.

Take Two reports that GTA:SA has sold over 21.5 million copies. The most accurate figure I can find for SMB3 is one from Guinness World Records at around 17-18 million. Keep in mind that gaming has gotten into far larger markets than it had in the NES days, that San Andreas is on far more successful platforms than SMB3 (PS2, Xbox, PC compared to SNES, GBA, and VC) and has in many ways more of a casual appeal (compare a random summer action film, or maybe more aptly a Tarantino flick, to a more upbeat classic like disney animations).

i've been a gamer for over ten years.but there were spans of my life where i didnt have a system for a while.plus i am a musician as well. but i think back in 70's/80's was the birth of the so called "hardcore"gamer because of how games were made back then (mostly arcade games).the past five years i play games more than i ever have. i have gaming sessions up to eight hours. you can easily scratch 6 hours everyday for me depending if i have my ds at work or not. whenever im off i might play for ten hours a day depending what game i'm playing. i can play oblivion on my ps3 all day and still want more LOL. plus i have a nice collection of gaming swag i recently started collecting and is growing. yea i'd say gaming is a big part of my life and that i am hardcore about it.

If Take Two is including all platforms GTA was released for as you imply, then SMB3 almost definitely beats it because the Guiness record is going solely by NES sales. If you were to count All-Stars, World+All-Stars, Mario Advance 3 (I think it was 3), and Virtual Console sales, I highly doubt SMB3 would still be the lower figure when it is already pretty close.

Also, I don't understand the film comparison. If SMB3 is a Disney film and GTA is a Tarantino film... I'm pretty sure Disney out does Tarantino? I'm not about to argue what has more "casual" appeal because if GTA is casual, then the word surely has no meaning. If there's one thing I know, it's that soccer moms are not mowing down street walkers.

Anyway, I have no stats to back anything up. And even if SMB3 isn't the best selling game, my point was just that it was highly selling and at one point the most popular game ever, so it's highly inaccurate to refer to it as fatally flawed when it clearly has enjoyed a long and successful life. Some people will have trouble with it, sure, but that's like saying soccer is fatally flawed sport because some people aren't good at it.

I'd say I used to be a hardcore gamer, but over the years, espicially since going to college I've become more of a casual gamer. Sure I'm not becoming bored of it, It's my favourite hobby, I still get games, posters, sometimes shirts and other merchendise. I ain't ashamed to admit what I love in public. But due to getting a girlfriend and more mates at college I'm usually more out then in.

That doesn't mean eventully I'll stop though, sometimes I could be bored out of my mind and gaming takes that all away. I admit it's not as fun as it used to be, but due do the fact of being able to download old games on 360, Wii and PS3 bringing back pretty much all my childhood favourites and classics I had never played, it gives me another reason to carry on gaming.

Guess the closest thing to me is Regular gamer. I been playing games since the NES to now, but I don't devote so many hours to gaming (well I try not too).

I've been gaming for 30 years, I own 33 game systems, including 2 Japanese arcade cabinets, over 1400 games, and I've read every history of video gaming book ever written. I've also been in video game media for the past 5 years. So yes, definitely casual all the way.
