Topic: So UK Wii games work on Aus Wiis? (Also: Eldar Saga discussion thread)

Apparently so? I hope so anyway - it looks like it's going to be the only way I'll get to buy a copy of Eldar Saga. If that game was released in Australia itself, it was done so in such limited copies that no shop - online or off, has a single copy, or the game on their databases.

According to what google pulled up for me (see #18), yes.

there were other threads out there with people who have played UK imports on AUS Wiis, but i don't feel like linking to all of them. :3

Yeah, I did a Google search, but there was so much umming and ahhing in what I turned up that I came out more confused than I went in. Thanks!

But given that it looks like I can now buy Eldar Saga, I will change this thread to be an Eldar Saga thread _

Underrated game? Niche appeal? The new King's Field IV (otherwise known as the game that critics slaughtered that I couldn't play enough of, and Demons' Souls is, by comparison, a massive disappointment to me, despite being a spiritual sequel)?

Or just plain bad?

I only played its predecessor, so why you play it, WaltzElf, be sure to leave impressions. The first game was very flawed, and I didn't enjoy it at all, but I think it was PSP only anyways.

You are enthusiastic for Eldar Saga?

Because the magazine I subscribe to called it a poor man's Monster Hunter Tri.

I know. I've read a few reviews of the game.

But then critics make all kinds of crazy claims about Kings Field IV being a "poor mans everything," and I still maintain it was my favourite darned game on the PS2.

I've learned to accept I have some pretty wonky tastes when it comes to RPGs sometime. I would certainly apprecaite a game in the vein on Monster Hunter, with a stronger RPG element, and a visual style similar to Kings Field... which again brings me to Eldar Saga.

The last Wii game I was this excited for was... Chocobo Dungeon (Samurai Warriors doesn't count, because I had no interest in the Warriors formula before I played Sam Warriors 3 - which kick started that whole addiction).

"I'm not stealin', Kirby! I'm borrowing this Wii! I'll mod it so it can play imports, you see. Unlike the DS (which can play Mother 3), the Wii, I confess, just ain't region-free!"
Doesn't answer you question, but I immediately thought of that when I saw the forum title.
(by the way that was from this strip of Brawl in the Family.

Take it with a large pinch of salt. The magazine I subscribe to gave Bit.Trip Runner a 1/5 because it was too difficult.

Well, yeah. I think too many people try and treat games journalism (or any other forum of criticism) as some kind of persuit of the objective truth. It's not really the case. Games journalists can only write from their own perspective.

The best way to read reviews IMO, is to understand what you as a game like, and don't like, and a good review will address those points to give you an idea of whether the game is the kind of thing you'd enjoy.

From what I've read about Eldar Saga, it's actually my kinda game.

Once I heard its ridiculous footstep sound effect on YouTube, I knew to steer clear of it. Also it looked pretty glitchy. Your character would kinda jerk around when roaming the city occasionally.

After reading the user comments on YouTube videos and the reviews, I know this is definately a game for me. Seems there's an absolute wealth of old-school style RPG trappings and the like, wrapped up in that action RPG frame.

The visuals really appeal to me too. People call them crap, I say that they're an effective stylistic choice to build a world that is gloomy and dark.... just like Kings Field IV

Ordered off eBay. Now the wait, and then the fun!

Better try and knock over Dragon Age on the PS3 before then :-/

So Ive played around 4 hours now, and I completely disagree with just about every review out there. There is no way this is a bad game.

It's not brilliant, or a work of art, but it is stylish and entertaining. The level of character customization is impressive, and the number of stats to keep track of warms the heart of a D & D veteran like myself.

Graphically I have yet to encounter this 'darkness' that the reviews harp on about. I see everything just fine on my TV. Yes, the game is grey, but that's a stylistic choice - just like it was with Nier on the PS3, and it works. The game has a definite 'down' atmosphere, and creates a mood of medieval apocalypse quite well.

The only downer is the footstep volume, I will grant that that grates on the nerves after a while, but a bit after that threshold I had learned to ignore it. So it is not a game breaker.

The story itself isn't very compelling, but overall this is a nice, straight forward dungeon hack RPG, with a real focus in character customization and stat crunching. It's unique on the Wii, and is nothing like Monster Hunter Tri (I have no idea where the reviewers got 'poor mans Monster Hunter' from, but I doubt they played this game properly to form that impression).

It's not for everyone, and I would only recommend it to people I know share similar tastes to me, but if I was to break it down into a score, I would giver it 6/10 so far (personally it's an 8/10 for me).

Glad you liked it, WaltzElf. While I'm sure I won't share the same sentiments as yours, it does sound like you'll get your money's worth for it.

Yeah, don't go and buy it, you probably won't enjoy it. But I do! Definately shaping up to be the Kings Field of this console generation for me.

SKTTR

I think I'll get this too.

I love Eldar Saga. I loved King's Field as well. It's funny you should make a comparrison between the two, because what I like about both titles, is the more 'western' nods to old school CRPGs. Maybe that's why these didn't do so well as console games, maybe the audience just isn't there.

Eldar Saga in particular, plays like a western, third person MMO. Once you've put enough hours into it, you begin to realize just how deep and customizable the game is. The manual is a little lacking, though. You'll get more enjoyment out of the game if you look up a couple good FAQs. Also, the multiplayer side, is a big disappointment. It's hard to connect, and you're booted after a chosen quest, as opposed to having the single player game world open to exploration. You won't care once you get into the offline game though. Mercenaries are good company!

My only major beef is the sound of the footsteps. How did no one think to tone them down before releasing the game? And it can be hard to see after a rain, when it gets foggy, but I love the atmosphere you get from the weather, and day-night cycles.

Just give me one like this, every year, and I'll be a happy laddio.

Wow, someone who shares my RPG tastes... eerie

I think you're right about that - meshing western and Japanese RPG conventions together don't seem to sit comfortably with most people.

I also think it's how subtle and muted these games are. There's nothing flashy about either Eldar Saga or Kings Fields, but to me there's a elegance and beauty about the bleak visuals and lack of colour. Where other RPGs - especially Japanese RPGs, go out of their way to be bright and colourful, even when there's a darker undertone, and where Western RPGs turn the blood and violence scale up to 11, Kings Field and Eldar Saga just sit there, drawing a certain type of person into the world without them really realising it.
