I am a bit confused on how all of these different virtual consoles and e shops work..... I see that Faxanadu is on the wii virtual console. That is one of my favortie games of all time. I dont own a wii, but I do own a wii U and a 3ds. Is there a way to play that game on either system?

Go to the Wii Shop channel in Wii Mode. You need to either buy Nintendo Points with a credit card straight off the Wii Shop, or find the fund cards at a store.

You can't play it on the 3DS, which has a separate VC system, but you can play it on the Wii U through Wii Mode. Unfortunately you can't use the Gamepad for this version.

Well of course they want to make money, they aren't a charity. The whole point of the eShop is to get you to spend money on their digital products. In a way it kinda makes sense for them to do weekly releases rather than putting all of the games on there at once. Think about when there's a massive push for games at the end of the year where you might grab two or three games even though there were probably two or three times that many you were generally interested in. When March comes around you're looking for something new again you'll usually ignore last years releases and look for something new.

If instead they spaced all of the releases across the year in weekly updates it encourages you to look at the store regularly. Every time you do your weekly look there's something new to consider that you would have otherwise skipped over if it was just a huge list of games from the start. That's the rationale.

As for the cross platform play I think they have gotten it right with the Wii <-> Wii U thing. It makes sense to not have to pay the full price again for a game you have already purchased but it makes sense to charge people for the advantages of playing it on a new platform. So a discount works and I'm ok with it even if it's not as good as "free" from our POV. What I don't like is the fact that if you buy a NES game on the 3DS it doesn't discount your Wii U purchase or visa-versa. Maybe when they push the NNID over to the 3DS they will fix that. Even if it works the same as Wii <-> Wii U works now that's good enough.
