Topic: Wii U Game Library

Hi guys. I was wondering how many games you think the Wii U's library should have that are genuinely great games, as in the quality of MK8 or Smash Bros. Wii U, by the end of its life-cycle. I was thinking 20-25 games of the quality that have already been released, e.g WWHD, Super Mario 3D World, Pikmin 3, DK:TF etc, would be a respectable amount with the lack of third party support. Any ideas?

Why does this even matter? Like seriously. No one can guess that number. And quality relies on taste. Not everyone likes the same thing. Again... Why even create a thread about this?

I own a Wii U and 3DS. I also own a PS4!

I meant how many games would you like to have bought, or typically buy, for a system in its life-cycle, rather than guessing how many there will be in the end. Sorry if its a pointless question but I thought I'd ask anyway.

Less than any other Nintendo home console to date (excluding Virtual Boy).

I really don't like the navigation bar of Nintendo Life continuously reappearing while browsing!!

In my opinion a collection of 25-30 great games is enough to call the system a great system, anything beyond that is even better

Going back a couple generations, I have:

28 Gamecube games
34 Wii games
39 PS2 games
66 PS3 games (counting remastered collections as 1)

And I gave away or traded in games that I didn't like, so those are all good games to me.

So far, I have 25 Wii U games. That's about 12 games per year, the best software ratio I've had for a console... well, ever. It easily has the best exclusive library of any of the consoles this gen so far, though that could change soonish. 2015 is a big year for the PS4.

Couldn't agree more. I've got as many Wii U games as NGC games, granted there'll always be a couple of NGC games I'm looking out for. But with the upcoming releases, I'm pretty confident that I'll end up with more Wii U games than NGC games, and that whilst my entire Wii U library is mostly first party games. I think they've already done a good job with the Wii U in terms of software.

Quality doesn't depend on personal taste. Fun/enjoyment you get of it does. Otherwise, I could call SM3DW, WWHD and Smash Bros low-quality titles.

By what metric?

All three of those are objectively great games. There's nothing low quality about them.

Well, OK, Smash Tour is kinda low quality.

And "great" has nothing to do with it.

Ah, I see what you're saying. Need to work on my reading comprehension.

So we're talking about the number of really great games you'd personally get on the system? As in ones you not only got but could actually see yourself actively recommending to others? Well for Wii, Wii U, DS, 3DS.....

DS: 8
Wii: 12
3DS: 10 (and no announced games on the horizon, for me at least)
Wii U: 8 (with a good 5 announced games on the horizon)

For me at least I think the Wii U is about the most gem-filled system I've owned since the SNES

I think Super Smash, SM3dW and MK8 are in a class by themselves. Bayonetta is pretty close. Then you have Hyrule Warriors, DCTF, Pikmin, W101, Rayman (I know, not an exclusive, but the best edition), NSMBU.... A notch below them are Wii Sport Club, Toad's Treasure Tracker and Kirby. I would recommend all of them. Gonna guess that Xenoblad, Zelda and possibly Splatoon are all in the top tier.

Just btw

Great games are a matter of personal taste and preferences. I will agree that Bayonetta is a great game - based on reviews that is. I am not interested in it though, so I will not count it as a great game for me, but I am happy that it is out there and helps the wii u gain some recognition. As of now there are only about 10 great games out there that I would count, others will disagree and say there are less while others will say theres more...

Quality is something you can objectively determine (but not measure, obviously), but just because a game is high quality doesn't mean you have to enjoy it. RB3 may be the most high quality band game out, to date, but I will always think back on Warriors of Rock more fondly. Or as someone else pointed out, you can't really argue that Smash 4 isn't a quality game. You can, however, say that you didn't personally like it. Aside from what pushy fanboys will tell you, that's a totally fair statement to make.

FOR THE RECORD: I have 20 full retail Wii U games and I would recommend half of them in a heartbeat. There's also a list of games I want and have yet to get for the system (Bayonetta 2 and Hyrule Warriors being among them) and quite a few games I really looking forward to, this year. (Mario Party 10, Xenoblade Chronicles X, Splatoon, Zelda U). All In all, I may be able to recommend a good 15-20 titles by the end of this year to any new Wii U owner.

Meanwhile (and I don't mean to turn this into a Sony-bashing thread, so don't take it that way), Uncharted 4 got pushed back. If it weren't for Bloodbourne and RB4 (and the eventual KHIII), I would seriously consider skipping PlayStation again, this gen. Why the HECK is this thing selling so well. (Amazing marketing, that's why. Something we can only hope Nintendo picks up on, next gen.)
