From a Wii shop perspective it is like formatting because your Wii Shop data is removed. I expect that means that you couldn't re-download Lost Winds on your old Wii for example. I no longer have my old Wii so I cannot test this, however.
oops..I opened another thread somewhat like this one yesterday. I guess I missed this one. Someone gave me the answer now but I was wondering....
"If you do a Wii to Wii U transfer, do the Mii's on your Wii console, replace the ones you made on the Wii U?? I really don't want to lose the Mii I made on the Wii U. I woul dhate to lose all those Nintendo Land records."
@skywake informed me that this is not the case. It would just replace the Miis you make on the Wii Menu on your Wii U console. Sounds a little more confusing then it is, but just FYI

Got an email from Nintendo. Apparently they're working on the LostWinds issue. They told me to wait with the data transfer so I canceled halfway through.
@Joshers: the Mii channel exists in the Wii Channel on Wii U, so initially they're just there. You then have the ability to copy them into the Mii Creator on Wii U so you can use them with your Wii U games and profiles. They get up-rezzed so they look like Wii U Miis.
I guess I can't choose which saves I'll transfer to Wii U and which will stay. Can someone confirm this?
I'm pretty sure it has been answered already somewhere but I thought it would be just easier to ask it here. I hope someone is kind enough to answer this question. I'd like to transfer all my save data and games to the Wii U I'm getting soon but leave other save data on my Wii. By other save data I mean my little sister's saves as I'll give my Wii to her and she has Dance Dance Revolution saves in the Wii already. I'd like to let them stay on Wii while I transfer my stuff to Wii U. This way she wouldn't have to start her games all over again. And it would also be stupid to have her DDR save data on my Wii U as there's no GC port which the mat uses. I hope there's a way to not let that happen so her save data won't go to waste.
It's its, not it's.

If it's not locked on the Wii (online games), then you can actually copy the data onto an SD card and use it on both the Wii and Wii U. After the transfer it should be fine, but again hopefully it's not locked to the Wii

@LZBirdboi: Thanks for the quick answer! I'm 99% sure neither of her DDR games have online capabilities so I guess everything will work out just fine (unless I forget to copy the data).

Can you do that? I was thinking about doing the same so my sisters could keep their games on the Wii and I'd have the Wii U all to myself. :3

Yup. I just copied my Skyward Sword data to the SD card, put it in my Wii U and copied it into the system memory. Works fine for me

...So to be clear, you can keep playing that save of Skyward Sword on your Wii?
Yup, but any progress on the Wii U would have to overwrite the file on the Wii
Hmm... I'm sorry, I'm not sure I understand... can you give an example of what is overwritten opposed to what isn't? This subjected has just been total confusion for me.

Well, you can copy any save file (except for locked saves) from the Wii to the Wii U, and the file will work on both systems if that's what you're asking
