Before the "day 1" update the console doesn't support external USB storage. It's a big update that adds a lot of stuff so we shouldn't be that surprised it's fairly large. And yes, they will eventually start selling Wii Us with the "day 1" update installed.... just as they do with every console.
I'm sure for example that if you buy a 3DS now it comes with the eShop and folders and so on. I'm almost 100% certain that Wiis that were released after launched came with the eShop, News/Weather and so on all installed. Same will happen with the Wii U.

"Don't stir the pot" is a nice way of saying "they're too dumb to reason with"

Oh, did not know that. The first thing I did was the update
But Nintendo did say that the update will be included in the future.

Goddamn stop complaining about updating. The higher tech our little toys become the more maintenance in form of udpates they might need, not a single modern (current gen, or last gen or however you want to call it) console didn't have those updates. And again: Updates = GOOD. If you can't wait that 30 minutes (which it took my friend on a normal DSL connection) then I don't know how to help you...

Why not make sure the next shipment of Wii Us are already updated? I agree the advice is okay for those already on the market, but I'll be damn disappointed if future Wii U console shipments still need to be updated after being bought.
Honestly, it's things like this that make me miss the days of no downloadable content or patches, because Nintendo would HAVE to get it right first time.
its been said that the update wont start to be preinstalled on the wiiu until next year
