I didn't find a thread like this during my internet searches (much less this site), so I thought I'd make one. The intentions here are to present to you facts about the stage builder and its components which may be of use to you. This thread will be updated with more information by request and by self-discovery, and also if there are any patches that change things.

Dimensions (in grid-blocks): On Camera + Off Camera = Total
*Vertical: 56 + 12 = 68
Horizontal: 92 + 32 = 124
(*The top 18 rows [6 On Camera; 12 Off Camera] are unusable and darkened out. They are not incuded in the above count.)

Tips:

  • To build a single layer platform (one that players can drop through by pressing down), tap a starting and end point and then press any button (I normally press the "Test" button to be safe). If you want to build one with an incline, you MUST start with the lower end, or it will not build. Also, if the incline is too steep, it will not work.
  • Special Objects (Moving Platforms, Springs, and Cannons) can be placed inside or go through land,
  • Moving Platforms do not count as solid ground and cannot be used as spawn points.
  • When placing a cannon inside the edge of land, make sure at least the full butt of the cannon or a little past the red end on the front is showing in order to be able to use it.
  • You can place land inside of bigger land, which is solid to stand on. You can use cannons to fire players inside of the bigger piece to the "hidden land(s)" and have blind battles.

Special Object Bugs/Glitches/Oversights:

Moving Platforms:

  • If any move through a stage's main piece of land (where fighters spawn at the beginning of a match), you will not be able to test or save and you will get the message "There is not enough ground for the fighters to stand on.", even if the crossing point(s) are on the edges, far away from where any spawn points would be. This mostly affects stages with large pieces.

    Springs:

  • Cannot be rotated
  • If the top of a spring is close to the surface of land and a player lands on it holding a Screwball, the player can be glitched in place, repeating what would be the start of a bounce. (May be able to cancel it with a well-timed press of the jump button. Needs further testing.)
  • More of an issue with the Assist Trophy, if you are holding one and bouncing on springs, you will be unable to use it, throw it, or pick up another item. This is because you need to stand on solid ground for a moment to activate one.

    Cannons:

  • Some characters have different "placement" when put in a cannon. This can cause a few glitches.
~ When a cannon is facing any direction of up through a surface, certain characters cannot fire through and can get stuck, endlessly firing up against that surface (This mostly occurs when the cannon is pointing directly up) unless interrupted by another player. This is caused by a character's placement being too far back in the cannon. List: Peach, Zelda (to be updated).
~When a cannon is pointed directly sideways and is very close to the surface (or slightly into it), certain characters will shoot out and go right through the ground. (For whatever reason, I've run into this issue randomly with different characters while playing Online with Friends. Thus, it needs further checking.) List: Captain Falcon (to be updated).

    Lava:

  • Even if a player smashes another player into/off of lava and they die, it always counts as a Self-Destruct.
  • When drawing lava, even if much of it is drawn over air and does not appear when done (i.e. does not exist), it still counts toward your stage weight limit.

I need your help with something. I created a stage in stage builder, then after I was done I realised the music track I selected sucked. I want to change the music selection but the game won't let me. Is this possible without starting over? Ditto for the image backgrounds...

Honestly Brawl's was so much easier to use even if it had the stupid grid thing.

Also I have found the stage builder extremely frustrating to deal with. Little Big Planet was easy as hell to draw and modify shapes or change materials. You literally move the cursor around like a glorified paintbrush. Yet you literally can't edit anything in Smash Bros once placed, and have to completely redo whatever object you made. Why is it so frustrating to tweak things?

Here's my sadistic torture chamber. Crappy but whatever. Now I only just want to change the background track because I didn't give much thought to the music when I started...

I'm pretty sure you cannot change the background. However, I THOUGHT you could change the music track. I may be mistaken, however. Try going into said stage in Edit Mode and re-save. Does it not let you change the name and/or track before confirming the save?
Apologies for not having a sure answer. I haven't been to the stage creator in a little while - possibly since the day I created this thread. I may have to check and update this thread for what you have asked. Also, thank you. I thought nobody thought this was a good idea or something... :/
